“STAIRS and MORE STAIRS”
Reviewed 16 June 2013

NO LIFT in this rambling apparently old hotel. However, despite the 1625, the owner told us that it really is not true, but "kept" to be the oldest in town.
Check in was rather .... well, difficult. Our room, apparently, was booked by the tour company. When my partner realized there was NO lift .... he was adamant that one was needed or "something." I can NOT "do" stairs with ease. The room WAS changed finally, though reception, surely just "doing her job" conceded for which we WERE grateful. The room was okay, but did not feel particularly safe....anyone could walk behind the building and crawl in our room. The window situation was close the window and be warm. Access to an upper parking lot made getting into the room from the car level easy.

Room Tip: Be able to walk! Not certain what else to say.

This hotel boosts on its outside wall, that it is there since 1625. The outside architecture lets you believe it. The inside architecture judging from the staircases and the doors points more to the 1800s (no elevators, but nice).
The rooms do not in any way refer to times gone by. These rooms are modern, and with all amenities that a hotel should have.
Breakfast is very good too.

Room Tip: Taking a room on the lower floor is recommended, the hotel has parking in the back and it is easily...

We enjoyed our 3 night stay at the Mariners Hotel which is c 30 mins drive from St Davids. We visited the coast twice - only 20 mins to Little Haven which is on the Pembrokeshire coastal path.
Rooms in the hotel are spacious and comfortable. The hotel is full of character being a very old building - an old coaching inn I think. No noise between rooms and the location is very quiet. Friendly and helpful staff made our stay very relaxed. Excellent shower/bath. The meal in the bar was excellent and breakfasts were good.

The hotel is a 10 min walk ( with a steep hill on the way to the hotel, for those with a buggy) from the train station. We booked a family room inclusive of breakfast and stayed 2 nights. We also ate at the restaurant as we were starving, my Thai chicken curry was dry and bland. My friend had a potato and leek soup, which was fine. The room was on the dark side and generally felt outdated. However, it was clean. The service of Andrew ( thanks for not forgetting the pump :) and Jamie ( thanks for the laundry) were highly appreciated, ever so welcoming and helpful. The breakfast did have enough choice ( full English, cereals, tost and jam), but most importantly it was served to our satisfaction. ( I must say the weekend was a little unpredictable due to non-existence of transport links. Don't come before checking that they exist, or better come if you rent/ own a car).

Have stayed here twice on business with colleagues and on both occasions received a good welcome from the staff. However, the hotel itself is outdated and lacking in basic facilities.
For the price of £69 for single occupancy I would expect (and have received) far better quality rooms. As a single traveller at the Mariners you are given a single bed which is pretty rare these days. Beds have blankets and eiderdowns rather than duvets (not sure how hygienic that is...!) and the mattresses are saggy and rather uncomfortable.
On the whole, the rooms really need refurbishing to be up to the standards expected by modern travellers.
Breakfast was OK but again, didn't offer the range you might expect in other similarly priced hotels. The basic cereal, yoghurt and juice was available and the cooked options were made fresh to order which is nice to see. As another review has mentioned, the sausages were really cheap and disappointing! No fresh fruit, pastries or similar offered.

Overall, the Mariners is well-located within Haverfordwest town centre and has the advantage of its own parking. Otherwise, for the price charged, it is not very good value for money.

Stayed here from Wednesday- Friday. The hotel is very clean and very welcoming..
The bedroom was clean every time we'd go in there, the water in the shower was hot,
The staff are very friendly and are very hard working staff.
The food is outstanding! Very well priced as well!
If I would recommend a hotel to stay in it will be this one! 100% excellent!
