“Not the greatest of experiences and a waste of my hard earned money :(”
Reviewed 1 September 2013

After booking this hotel as a surprise for my partner, I had very high expectations due to the previous reviews and comments.
From the moment we arrived we were disappointed.
We parked up in the car park behind the hotel and paid £2 as we were too early for check in which we didn't mind, so had a walk around the town.
On return to the hotel we told the receptionist that we had parked there, she asked for our reg number and said that they didn't have an parking permits left so we would have to pay, even though the booking documents stated parking was included.

We were then given our keys and were told that we were “unfortunately on the 2nd floor”, meaning it was the top floor which we didn't mind. Got to the 2nd stair case and had to let ourselves through a roped barrier which was odd.

Into the room, really small room, cracks across the wall and a cot taking up most of the room which we were confused of as the booking was made for the two of us.
The bath room wasn't very inviting due to the side panel of the bath hanging off.
Unpacked our bags and went out for a walk. Came back later that night and the cot been taken from our room.

Decided to take a relaxing soak in the jacuzzi bath, both in and … no jacuzzi. No instructions on how to use it. Got out, only one bath towel and one hand towel. Hand towel to soak up the leaking bath so had to share the bath towel.
Later on after seeing an unlabelled switch near the skirting-board in the bedroom realised that this should be on to active the jacuzzi.

Bed time. Lots of noise from the ground floor late into the night.
Finally fast asleep to be woken up with the fire alarm that was turned off before we could get to the door. Then woken up from what sounded like an external generator.

We handed our key into receptionist, there was nothing spoken from her. No how was your stay or apology for the previous night.
Getting into our car and another receptionist runs out after us and tells us we have an outstanding balance. Apparently the payment doesn’t go through on their website so I had to embarrassingly pay with my card there and then looking like we had tried to make a run for it.

:( so not the greatest of experiences and a waste of just under £100.

We stayed overnight in Knighton, but not at the hotel. We booked an evening meal in the hotel restaurant. The food was lovely and very well presented. The service was friendly and uncomplicated. We do recommend this restaurant.

The Knighton Hotel has been handsomely refurbished, our room was lovely - light and spacious, and the bathroom similarly well decorated. The shower was powerful, and there was a jacussi bath (which we didn't have time to use, sadly). There was a kettle with a good choice of teas and coffee, and good quality biscuits. The young man on reception was super helpful with storing our bicycles. and sorting out our breakfast saga (read on..!).

Oh dear, the breakfast. I have stayed in Youth Hostels that have a better buffet choice! The self serve aspect was in a rather unpleasant side room, and consisted of a choice of yoghurts (mostly fudge - when I said that wasn't really what we wanted for breakfast, the response was that they buy a selection of yoghurts in bulk, and the fudge ones are the ones that are always left. But why put them out? Luckily I got the last plain yoghurt, then the fudge ones were the only ones left for the other poor guests). There were also basic cereals in individual portion packets, and bland white and brown sliced bread that you had to toast in the automated toaster.

When the cooked breakfast didn't arrive, and other guests who had arrived later were getting theirs, we enquired where ours was - apparently it had got stuck in the dumb waiter and gone cold, so they had to start again. It would have been nice to have been told this. At least, when we checked out, they didn't charge us for the breakfast.

wonderful stay. A beautiful hotel that has been refurbished to a high standard. Staff were excellent and nothing was too much trouble, very polite and helpful.
We stayed in the Orangerie room with its glass ceiling and panoramic views on three sides. Lying in bed looking at the stars was an experience never to be forgotten. The room was beautiful and also included a jacuzzi bath and power shower, wonderful.
The breakfast was top notch and set you up for the day. Would not hesitate to stay here again.
Big thank you and well done to all the staff and management for a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: all the rooms are very good ,but if you can try for room 29.the orangierie it will take your breath...

Spent our last night here after walking part of the Offa's Dyke Path. All started well when we were checked in early by a very welcoming young man. The room was comfortable with great bathroom facilities. Had a reasonable nights sleep, despite the heat. However the whole experience was badly let down by the breakfast experience. When the food eventually arrived the order was wrong but by now we just needed to eat. The scrambled egg was dry and frankly the smallest portion I have ever had in a hotel anywhere. It was a shame to leave on a bad note because the recent renovation of the Knighton Hotel has been extremely well done and deserves better.

Stayed here recently and was quite impressed. Staff were very helpful, room was adequate with a massive wet room which was great. I had a single room but you have everything u need I.e. tea/coffee, biscuits, hair dryer. I also ordered food in the main restaurant and was very pleasantly surprised at the quality. Great little stopover if visiting that part of Wales.

We ended up in the Knighton Hotel unexpectedly after another establishment messed up our booking. We were warmly greeted by Derek who as it turns out does just about everything, from reception to bar, to serving in the restaurant. The room was on the pokey side with a wetroom that had generous quanitites of toiletries. Not sure about the wisdom of having a mirror right next to the shower though. The young locals were lively and had sunk a few by the time we had pre dinner drinkies on the deck outside and entertained us by lobbing chips around. Husband got hit on the back by a very large chip! They did look good on the plus side. Food in the restaurant was not gourmet but tasty and really good value for money. The beef curry was great. Only 3 tables were occupied with one lot just finishing as we sat down and service was on the slow side until Derek got involved. Waitress was friendly. We had a rubbish nights sleep courtesy of the noisy kids making a racket outside at 1.30 am.Hot night with no air con meant open window! We had to close it. Breakfast was on the small side and it was annoying having to make your own toast especially with a queue for the toaster. All in all not what we had planned because of earlier problems but Derek was fab!
