“Walking Offa's Dyke”
Reviewed 3 September 2013

My friend and I stayed in May whilst walking the first half of Offa's Dyke, we returned for a second stay whilst we completed the second half of the walk but this time we were armed with ear plugs to make sure we were prepared for the noise from locals in the courtyard below the rooms.
The staff are really friendly and the evening meal was good although we would have liked a choice of fresh fruit for breakfast.
It was our second stay so that says it all!

The rooms are arranged in what was the hay loft above the stables of this 14th century coaching in. Access is via a wooden staircase from the courtyard. We stayed in the Tollant room. Due to listed building status the spacious room has just one window which leaves the room a bit dark, given that the "main" lights are spotlights pointing up at the old roof supports.
The attractive en suite bathroom on the other hand is bright and airy, lit by the one Velux window that they were allowed to install and when dark by modern halogen spotlights.

The Horse and Jockey is opposite one side of the livestock market. Parking is available in the auctioneers' car park - we could see our car from our room.

The Horse and Jockey has a good range of real ales and a restaurant with a "normal" menu plus a wide range of pizzas which are also available as takeaways.

Full English breakfast was excellent - beautiful local bacon and sausages - not supermarket rubbish - and very well presented. We ate in the restaurant first night ate from the main meal menu, second night we each had one of their pizzas - best pizza I've had outside of Rome.

Like RJWood we, (well the one of us with hair!), had the hairdryer /mirror problem which we informed the owner of, so that may get fixed.

We Stayed in the Tollant room, very clean, comfortable and well presented, although not easy to dry hair in front of a mirror, (easy fix would be to swap wardrobe and dresser around and move the mirror!).

Polite and friendly welcome by bar staff, ate in the restaurant which we thought was excellent, well cooked fresh tasting meals.

Breakfast was again very tasty although felt a menu or options available would have made ordering a little easier.

On the whole a very pleasant, relaxing stop over between Anglesey and South Glos.
**One word of caution - if you are a light sleeper, this may not be the place for you as we stayed on a summers evening with locals sat outside listening to a live singer! Have a glass of wine and eat their tasty food and this certainly helped us sleep through!

Room Tip: The Tollant was a large but cozy feeling room, King size bed and very well presented.

The rooms appear to be quite similar. Each is very small and dark with tiny windows. Have to hang clothes on back of door. Room & bathroom very clean though. Restaurant looks like something out of the 1970s and is very dated. Food adequate but order taken incorrectly.

My partner and I don't usually stay in pub accomodation, so I can't really compare this with other pubs. The room was pleasant enough, although a little bland. The beds were comfy and there was a large tv. There was a very good ensuite with a big "p" shaped bath. A previous reviewer had commented that the bathroom door in this room (Boozey) did not close properly and that there was no handle on the inside of the door to help it close or open. We found that these problems had not been fixed. This led to a lack of privacy.

We had a meal in the courtyard one night, which was nice and had a continental feel to it.

The overall service at the pub was polite and efficient, but lacked a personal touch.

The breakfast was well cooked and tasty, but we found the overall breakfast experience a bit gloomy. Breakfast is taken in the restaurant which is quite pleasant, but we were shoved up a dark corner facing the wall. We were asked what we would like in the way of a cooked breakfast and we replied that we are vegetarian and asked what the choice was. The waitress replied "whatever he's got available". We were then given what appeared to be the standard cooked breakfast minus the bacon and sausage. So, it seemed a bit small, although there was a grilled capsicum with it, which was tasty, if a little strange for breakfast. On the second day we asked if there was anything like hash browns or potato waffles and were offered some sauteed potoatoes which were nice, but we wondered why they weren't offered on the first morning. On the third monring we saw some other guests had been given some baked beans although we were not offered any.

It was a shame really because with a little more thought, what was a tasty but small breakfast in a dingy corner of the restaurant, could have been made something special, by explaining the different options available or having a menu. Guests could be seated at the main restaurant tables and perhaps a little soft music could be played, which would create a better atmosphere and impression.

As to whether or not we would stay her again, no, we wouldn't as we much prefer a traditional bed and breakfast establishment to this pub.

Gorgeous little snug room, with a lovely hot roaring fire. Staff were all incredibly friendly and polite. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was lovely, home cooked and fresh. We were recommended to visit this Inn, so glad they did!!
