“A very good B&B in a peaceful location”
Reviewed 24 September 2012

We needed an overnight break on the way into deepest Wales, found Plas Uchaf on Alastair Sawday’s website and were encouraged by Trip Advisor reviews. We were impressed at first sight. Located high on a green hillside and approached by a winding drive – a pretty and impressive Queen Anne house.
We were made very welcome and shown to our “garden room” – actually a well converted ex-stable(?) standing alone and apart from the house (see picture). Comfortable, and perfect for us and our dog – fitted out with twin beds and a settee and all necessary facilities (though I don’t think a hair dryer was in the room).
In the evening we enjoyed a while in the pleasant lounge with its books and well stocked “honesty bar”, and then had a good quality and reasonably priced evening meal (under £20 for 3 courses – well cooked and presented – I recommend the perfectly kept local cheeses).
Breakfast consisted of a generous buffet of fruit dishes, juices, yogurt, muesli and croissant, as well as all the usual cereals. While we enjoyed all this our host prepared our full Welsh breakfast. Again, the quality was high and the local bacon and sausage were particularly good (and I’m pretty choosy).
We were fortunate to have lovely weather during our brief stay and were able to sit out and soak up views of the surrounding hills and fields.
Guests are free to use the extensive garden areas which are mainly grass, including a croquet area, but are rather let down by the borders which are crying out for many hours of TLC – not easy as the gardens were laid out when such a house had many full time staff!! But don’t let that put you off – you will enjoy Plas Uchaf, eat well, and be well looked after.

We spent one night at Plas Uchaf and could not fault it. Booked a premiere room which was probably the biggest room and bathroom we had ever stayed in, beautifully furnished with huge comfortable bed and enormous bath. Didn't eat dinner because we wanted to return to Sebastians restaurant in Oswestry (10 miles and £13 in taxi), but the breakfast was very good (perhaps cook the bacon a bit more Chris). A very relaxing stay. thanks.
The waterfall is about 10 miles east and well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Lovely views from front rooms

My wife and I were visiting the Llanfair Steam Railway Gala and decided to have an overnight stay in the area. Plas Uchaf appeared to enjoy very favourable reviews on Trip Advisor so became our first choice and we were delighted to find that they still had a room available. The reputation of this Guest House is fully deserved. Our stay was most memorable and as near to perfection as it is possible to achieve from the moment we were welcomed by Chris who was a most attentive host for our entire stay. The large room and huge bathroom were very comfortable with lovely views over the rolling Welsh hills. The dinner was beautifully cooked and presented as was the breakfast on the day of our departure. The imposing Queen Anne Country House had well appointed reception rooms and even an "honesty bar" if alcoholic refreshments were needed. It would be difficult to find fault with this establishment. My only worry is that it will become so popular that we might find it difficult to book a room should we need to return to the area.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have lovely views of the surrounding valley

What a lovely house in such beautiful surroundings, this was a real treat at the end of our holiday. Chris was very friendly and welcoming and they prepared us the perfect light supper at the last minute as we had omitted to pre-order. we found the other guests friendly and enjoyed tea and welsh cakes when we arrived. Our room was very clean and large with great views and we had a bath and proper shower in our premier room. The garden is pleasant to walk in and we felt very much at home and definitely plan to return.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay here and simply cannot recommend Plas Uchaf enough.

The owners are the perfect host's, nothing being too much trouble. We were greeted by Chris who insisted on carrying our case in from the car, such a gentleman.

First impressions are of a large country house set in well cared for gardens with superb views to the front. Inside its spotless and our (huge) bedroom couldn't have been more 'us' in its decor and furniture, pure coincidence but it made us feel completely at home.

Breakfast is excellent with various juices, yoghurt, cereals, and the ingredients of a full English very nicely cooked to you preference.

We dined in one night (24hrs notice please). We had Sea Bass and Pan Seared Duck Breast, simply excellent and the 'in house' cooking is highly recommended. For eating out the is a nice pub a couple of miles down the road, and plenty more further afield.

There is a 'honesty bar' in the very comfy lounge, just write down what you have and it will be totted up at the end of your stay. There is free WiFi, and friendly cats! We'll be back.

Room Tip: If you are mobility impaired, or wish to take your dog ask for the Garden Room on the ground floor.

I took my elderly mother to Plas Uchaf for a few nights and we stayed in the garden room. I can only reiterate all the other reviews, we loved it. It's in a wonderful spot with great views, our room was very comfortable and spotlessly clean and the beds very comfortable. The main house was lovely and the breakfasts and dinners consistently good. Chris was a great host, very helpful and welcoming. We would definitly go back and would highly recommend.

Room Tip: The garden room is great for those who can't manage tips stairs.

I booked this weekend through "Lastminute.com" whom I had not used before. They were very professional and helpful although did try to suggest other destinations but I had decided that it was to be Plas Uchaf after seeing the photographs.
We were greeted by Chris who is a charming and helpful host. my friend and I stayed in the garden Room as we both have difficulty with stairs. It was a lovely building in, of course, the garden with delightful decor including a leather couch on which to watch TV. The shower room was lovely and the shower perfect. The main house reception rooms are lovely. We were greeted with tea and biscuits on our arrival. The full English breakfasts were excellent and very filling.
The views of the countryside from the house are stunning. We were lucky in our weather and spent time outside sitting admiring the view.
We will be recommending Plas Uchaf to all our friends and relations and we will be back.

Room Tip: I did look, with Chris, at two rooms on the first floor and they were large and beautifully decorate...
