“A hidden gem in Powys”

We spent a night here celebrating our wedding anniversary in early September. Marvelous room with a high bed and smart shower room (the Master Room). Dinner in the restaurant was great. Good choice on the menu and an impressive wine list. Nice touches included not having to say when we wanted dinner - "Just go down to the bar when you're ready". A bit surprised that after-dinner coffee served in the lounge took the form of a large cafetiere and two espresso cups! But that's only a minor gripe. Helpful staff and acres of grounds contributed to the country house feel. As this was an Amazon voucher deal it was also exceptional value. We could well be back

We were travelling through mid Wales on our way to St David's and we're looking for a lunch stop on the main road. Seeing a 40-year old sign to a pub took us down a lane to a village where the pub had closed down some years earlier. Not expecting to find anything, we drove a little further and chanced on TLCHAS. And what a wonderful find! Spacious, relaxed, hospitable, it felt as though we were in someone's home as we were shown to the lounge. We only needed a light lunch and this was prepared with care and imagination, even the sandwiches. Thoughtful and attentive young staff engaged happily in small-talk and one of us played a couple of numbers on the piano once the other diners had gone into the dining room for lunch. Would like to come back and stay to enjoy the tranquility of the place.

What a find! We didn't need to leave the beautiful grounds during our stay. Weather was lovely for the time of year which helped. Food was delicious and room was very comfortable. We felt more like guests in a country house than clients in a hotel. Would definitely recommend it as a peaceful break away from it all.

A beautiful hotel in immaculate grounds. A warm welcome awaits from very friendly staff.
Lunch was good and could be taken in the lounge or the Orangery. We had treatments booked in the spa. My facial was one of the best, if not the best that I have had. The spa is very clean and relaxing. Especially the hot tub overlooking the lake and the beautiful swans.
We had recently stayed at the Northcote Manor Hotel in Devon ( a sister hotel of this one), where the food was exceptional and presented immaculately. So, we expected the same from this hotel, only to be very disappointed indeed. The appetizers served in the lounge before dinner were delicious, but the meal that followed was the worst I have ever tasted. My starter was so unrecognisable that I asked for a menu in order to know what I was eating. The waitress said that it was "new on the menu and chef would appreciate feedback". He got it ! My main course was equally awful. The white wine was room temperature so I asked for ice cubes to cool it down! The pity is that we were loving this place so much that before dinner we were seriously considering asking if we could extend our stay. Thank goodness we tasted the food first! Breakfast was equally awful. No brown toast. " Ran out of brown bread ". Egg sent back to be re cooked and wrong order brought! I did express my dissatisfaction to the management and I am pleased to say that they acknowledged that on this occasion they had fallen short of their usual high standards and apologised. Although happy that they were prepared to listen, it is so disappointing that this lovely hotel has been let down by its kitchen!

We booked to stay at this place for a couple of nights with our 1 year old son as a treat.
Arrived here after a very long journey.
The place seemed fine.
However, upon arrival at the restaurant for dinner, we were told no children under 8 years old were allowed in the restaurant.
Very shocking! Never heard of such policies in our time and age! Perhaps time in Wales has stopped and no updates have been made in the last 30 years?!!!
We were offered to have dinner in a separate room, which felt as a relief given how remote the place was and how difficult it is with a child at that age.
The next day, we all got ready to go to the pool, only to be told no children under 8 were allowed in the pool, and from 8 to 16 years old are only allowed for 1 hr a day.
How pathetic!! Well, we couldn't believe - not only that it is absolutely discriminating but also we never saw a single person in the pool and they still turned us away.
Very, very disappointed we decided to pack our bags and leave despite having paid for an extra night.
We felt very unwelcome.
Upon checking out, the lady asked if everything was ok with our stay, I simply said that they had a very child unfriendly policy, hence the reason we were leaving early. She said yes, they do. We found that very rude.
So if you are a family, think twice whether you want to spend your money here as nothing is cheap - a main course was £21.50!!!

There are many other places in Wales that deserve more attention than this one!

We are concerned to read your review and would like to take this opportunity to put your comments into context and provide a little explanation and balance.

Our child policies are detailed on our web site and while they may appear stringent, they allow us to offer something that perhaps other places can’t. In regards to the pool being empty, it’s quite often the case that our guests get the chance to have the pool to themselves; something that really adds to that special relaxing weekend away.

On researching your booking I can see that you booked through a third party. This third party has the facilities to book a child and there was no record of this. If your child had been mentioned on the confirmation we would have contacted you immediately to discuss our child policies and give you ample time to make other arrangements if you had wished. There would of course be no charges if this had been the case. We are always happy to discuss individual requirements.

Despite all of this we are genuinely sorry you did not enjoy your stay and would like to wish you all the best for the remainder of 2013.

My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights in a beautiful lodge. The whole experience we amazing, the food is divine, staff are welcoming and couldn't do enough to please, the spa is beautiful and the massage was fantastic.

The grounds are something else, stunning views and so tranquil. Very traditional hotel which should be enjoyed by all. My partner is a very fussy eater and has high standards, on the menu there wasn't lamb - however on both evenings the chef made him a special lamb dinner which he reported was first class.

If I was to be really really picky I would suggest a few improvements for the hotel -

Sign posts when you first arrive to direct you to the car park and reception. We wasn't 100% sure where to go once through the gate.

In the reception there is a musky smell which was a little off putting (other guests have also reported this) maybe some plug ins would do the trick.

The robes in the room had seen better days, maybe it's time to order a new batch. The tv also in the rooms was very old, perhaps having new TVs with DVD players and a selection of DVDs for guests to choose from would be a nice touch.

However these are minor and did not effect our stay! We are hard guests to please! Thank you for such a wonderful and enjoyable stay!!!!

We can't wait to come back.....

I have fancied the idea of staying in this country house hotel for quite a few years now. As we had to cancel our Italian trip this year, but other arrangements were still in place we managed a couple of days here.

We had a delightful suite in the main house, with a French window which led out onto a small garden and gave access to the drive where the cars were parked, so no lugging of suitcases around, as neither of us is able to lift at the moment.

The views are absolutely gorgeous from this room, but you must love trees. On the Sunday of our visit we had two walks in the umpteen acres of grounds, accompanied by the hotel dogs and the hotel cat! The spa looks beautiful for those who like that sort of thing and the lake and river are delightful.

Inside everything is very comortable and the food is very good. Perhaps, as a vegetarian, I could have done with a little more imagination than Italian food, but I suppose I could say that it reminded me of where I should have been. But all was beautifully presented and very pleasantly, too.

Shall we go again? Yes, it was very pleasant and very relaxing.
