“Another great stay”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

Another great break. Lovely hotel in a great location - Mid Wales is an 'undiscovered' gem. The journey (from the east) is great too - through the Cambrian Mountains. Great Welsh roads and stunning views. Take the lane route from Builth Wells (instead of the A road).

Rooms, private and public all very cosy - excellent cuisine. Lovely grounds with the lake and river Irfon to fish (me whilst my wife enjoys the spa).

We went on the Llynne Brianne trail - up the Forestry trail of the upper Irfon - then on top of the Cambrians and then down to the beautiful reservoir - stunning! There is a map available,

I love mid-Wales

An Englishman.

Room Tip: The Lodge is fine but the main house would avoid the occasional Welsh shower.

Stayed for 2 nights. A nice hotel to 'get away' and was very quiet. The staff were excellent and very friendly. The room was very big, clean and comfortable. The food was amazing
The spa area was very big and clean and the out door jacuzzi was nice and relaxing

This is one of the best hotels I've stayed at in the UK. Our rooms were large and individually decorated which makes a nice change to the usual cookie cutter rooms in most hotels. The staff were incredibly attentive but friendly rather than overly formal. Food was excellent and service was efficient and fast. The public areas were very comfortable with lovely old furniture and the grounds are superb.

This is almost 5* standard and I couldn't believe it only cost £125 per night (on Opodo, including breakfast) for the Easter weekend booked just one day in advance,

A few areas that could be improved - full 24 hour room service, mini-bar and rotating the dinner menu more frequently (we had the same menu for 3 days). Many British country house hotels are very shabby. The Lake is far from this but there are a few signs of this creeping in (e.g. some of the corridors).

This was a weekend bought by our children as a 40th anniversary present, we had just returned the day before from. A week in Paris and BOY what a shock to the senses. Fromfrantic City Centre to rural hideaway inless than24 hours.
First impression was of a quiet, old manor house inthe middle of nowhere. Our room was in the lodge a separate annexe apart from the main house, an obvious modern extension.
Our suite at first glance was spacious with a lovely bathroom and Queen sized bed. Warm and in reasonable decorated order. But still it felt a . Little tired.
Our weekend included 4 course dinners Fri& Sat, . And these were excellent, as was the breakfasts. Special mention for the staff they were faultless (first time I've ever said that about anywhere!). My wife and I enjoyed every dish we were served without exception. From. The homemade soup, ham hock terrine, Superb Cod Loin, Bass, I could go on and on.
We had a great massage in the SPA and the . Pool was good.
Great walks by the river Irfon and the Trout lake.

Room Tip: One of the corner rooms is use in the annexes for better views.

Stayed with my husband for a week-end, enjoyed the spa tremendously: massages, swimming in the pool, the beautiful outdoors Jacuzzi and the small gym to keep fit.
The staff was friendly, and did not mind accommodating us to change rooms (which were really beautifully decorated, we had a split one with a small living room area).
Dinner and breakfast delicious, and relatively formal - we're asked to sit in the lounge before being called for our reservation.
Having drinks/tea by the fire in that lounge on one of the large sofas makes one loose track of time. The hallway is well catered for with umbrellas to borrow, a small desk area with information about the region, and a luxurious yet homey feeling.
The grounds were so spacious and the hotel dogs made us feel like we lived there.

Would go back in a blip, lovely...

Room Tip: Careful not to let the dogs follow you outside of the hotel grounds. They are very friendly but owne...

This was our fourth visit to this hotel in ten years and although we once again experienced a very relaxing, comfortable stay we noted that the standard had slipped somewhat since our very first couple of visits. There didn't appear to be the 'attention-to-detail' to the service offered on our first couple of visits. Although the food offered in the restaurant was very good we were sorry to see that the same menu was presented on both evenings. Also, although restaurant staff are always very courteous and polite, on this visit they gave the impression that they were extremely busy and therefore only seemed to have time to take our order and delivery it in a very rushed manner. The breakfast room on our second day was also poorly staffed. After giving our order for porridge and a full Welsh breakfast, myself and my husband waited nearly 25mins before it was delivered. By this time all pastries on the buffet table had gone and the choice of fresh fruit was very minimal. We have always stayed in rooms in the lodge which have always been very comfortable however on this occasion we had a downstairs room which meant we were unable to open the curtains as it allowed others to see into the room as they walked past. Also we were unable to open the bedroom window on either night which meant the room was very warm and we both had an uncomfortable sleep. We cannot fault the staff who have always been very pleasant nor the fittings of the room although we preferred using the L'Occitane range of products in the bathroom that were previously available and also there were no tissues in the bathroom which was frustrating. We also noticed on this occasion that no biscuits were left with the tea & coffee making tray which we have received on previous occasions.
We have always enjoyed our stays at the Lake Country House and Spa and would hate to see the standard of service drop any further as despite the long drive it does offer a special escape in a beautiful location.

Room Tip: If you want to make use of any Spa Treatments I would recommend calling a couple of days before you...

We visited on a wet Sunday, arriving in time for a light lunch. The hotel is a pretty building set in the lovely Welsh countryside. We sat in the window of the beautiful main lounge looking out at the rain. Tea arrived quickly- just what we needed though I would have liked to see loose leaf tea rather than tea bags. Super sandwiches were served with salad and vegetable crisps. Our room was ready a little earlier than expected and were shown to our luxury suite by the lovely receptionist, Georgina. It was a lovely, spacious room and lounge area with a comfy sofa and beautiful views.

We took our robes to the spa where we had booked treatments. The spa facilities are good, the hot tub overlooking the lake being a highlight. The massage treatments were also very good, made special by the sound of the birds and water outside- you almost didn't need the music to relax you.

As our room was in an external building, I had to wear my boots over to main house for dinner as the rain was persistent, making the ground rather muddy. We sat in the lounge and ordered pre dinner drinks before being presented with a lovely menu and extensive wine list. The maître d' brought over some canapés- quite unexciting. Some dry chorizo in filo pastry, olives and crayfish with fruit. Not for me I'm afraid.

When we were ready, we were taken to our table in the dining room. Lovely linen and nice atmosphere. We were served an amuse bouche of winter vegetable soup which was very welcome, though the bread served was stodgy. Soon followed our starter of pigeon breast. A little over cooked for our taste but enjoyable. We had lamb for our main course which was beautiful. I finished with a delicious lemon cheesecake. My boyfriends banana parfait was the winner though- with a peanut mousse and caramelised banana. We enjoyed a few more drinks back in the lounge, before returning to our comfortable room.

After a great nights sleep, we woke to the newspaper we had ordered outside the door and returned to the main house for breakfast in the orangery. We were served tea and toast promptly and helped ourselves to the lovely buffet on offer. We ordered our Welsh breakfast which arrived shortly after, all of which was very good.

We went back to collect our things before checking out. We were fortunate enough to be shown some of the rooms in the main building for future reference all of which were lovely, even the smallest (classic) rooms. Our suite was more spacious than those in the main house.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much. Though the location is rural, there was plenty to entertain us with country walks and drives around the local area and the lovely spa. We could have easily stayed for a long weekend and hope to return soon to do just that!
