Have stayed here many times over the past few years for a chill out break; we recently stayed for 2 nights expecting a couple of nights of r&r and great food as we have had before. Great views and a relaxed friendly atmosphere with nice staff was as we expected.

The old country house hotel with a few sagging chairs and worn upholstery was as expected, however the standard of the restaurant meals not up to the great standard we have had before. The meals were generally OK but only OK - not great (apart from a risotto starter with chilli which was the texture of school rice pudding and tasted only of chilli - it really was horrible and we love spicy food!)

The in house pub meals were nice (apart from a fish cake with the most weird aftertaste - could not eat it). We ate there twice at lunch time (excellent burger); good atmosphere and good real ale although previously the bar menu featured the likes of local pheasant and this time the menu was more like any other pub menu.

The rooms remain quite tired and some windows are still single glazed and poorly fitting so a howling gale was coming in even with the windows shut. The bedroom furniture and carpet would look better in a skip. Bed comfy and room clean and bathroom OK.

So all in all its a hotel we really like in a fabulous setting with a chilled out atmosphere but the food was not as good as we have had before (perhaps has had a new chef? - perhaps chef on holiday?) and its time the owners went round every room with a note book, a critical eye then get the cheque book out!! If we had not been before we may have been happy with the food (mostly!) but because we have had such great meals there before we were disappointed.
At breakfast the haddock and poached egg is nice but perhaps a fillet from an adult haddock rather than a baby one would be better (tiny portion).

Would we go back again? Really not sure. Perhaps if the travelzoo offer is better than their full price we might but would have to think about it.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms are more expensive but what a view you get. There are some rooms with a balcony if...

Stayed here between Christmas and New Year. It was lovely from arrival to departure. Our room 40, had an amazing view over the lake and was so welcoming. We ate in the restaurant both nights and really enjoyed the food. The location is good too with lovely walks for all abilities. But you can also just sit and look out from the lounge or bar.
A mention too for all the staff, they were spot on with professionalism and friendliness.

The girlfriend & I arrived on the 2nd of January, our first impressions were very good, the hotel has a very elegant and rustic feel throughout & the decor is exactly what you would expect from an old Victorian Hunters Lodge, it keeps all the charm of its previous state but also accommodates guests with a natural blend between the old & new.

We stayed in Room 48 which is located in the newest part of the building right at the end of the first floor. The room is very spacious, with a large kingsize bed (2 twins were pushed together with a double headboard over the top) 2 antique looking leather chairs & a waxed wooden table. The En-suite was also very spacious with a lovely big bath enough space for 2 (with a little squeeze) to share a bottle of bubbly and some handmade truffles, an adequate sized power shower (plenty of power) and a decent loo. The best part of the room was without a doubt the view from the window/balcony... We paid an extra supplement for a Lake View room & this did not disappoint.

Both nights we had a lovely 5-Course Dinner, the menu is mainly Fish but there are a few pheasant, chicken & lamb dishes to keep everyone happy. The service was generally excellent & there was always someone happy to help & always with a smile.

We were lucky enough to have a voucher for a glass of bubbly & handmade chocolates each night so that kept our spending to a minimum but there is enough variety for any wine enthusiast.

All in all, this place is an absolute gem, fine dining at its best & a very warm and welcoming feeling as if you're staying in a home from home.

The only reason I am giving it a 4 and not a 5 is because of a few small minor things, listed below:
-Creaky Floorboards in old part of building
-Fittings & Fixtures missing (3)
-Slight Draft & minor seeping of water through balcony door seal

Apart from these 3 things I cannot really say a bad word, all these problems were adressed after consultation with the shift manager & reception staff after all.

In Summary, A fantastic little break away from reality, in an idyllic & naturally beautiful part of the country for a decent price. You cant really go wrong!

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review of your recent experience at Lake Vyrnwy. I am delighted that you enjoyed so much of your stay. Increasingly people are using Vyrnwy as an escape from the rush of everyday life; they come to rejuvenate, to unwind, much like yourselves.

I hope that you will accept my apologies for the faults that you found in your room; I am pleased to learn that they were addressed when discussed with various members of the team.

I do hope that you will return in future when a relaxing break in the country is needed.
Kind Regards

My wife and I spent three wonderful days from 31/12 to 02/01 and enjoyed every minute of the stay. Outstanding service from every member of staff we met together with quality food beautifully prepared ensured a very memorable stay. The location of this hotel is simply stunning with plenty to keep everyone occupied, that is, if you enjoy traditional activities. We have already reserved for 2014 - it was that good.

Many thanks

Derek & Shirley

We have just returned from a wonderful two day break at the hotel, this is our fourth visit and time t write a review. The location is spectacular and the view is breath taking.
Pam dealt with our booking and my wife has the highest praise for all her help and support. The staff are attentive and very good at their roles and enhance the guests experience with lots of helpful information.
THe spa is lovely and our family enjoyed an afternoon of relaxation and my wife is full of praise for the treatments on offer.
Our first night we dined in the restaurant and the food was super, very tasty and great presentation. The second evening 16 of us dined and the service was excellent and we enjoyed a great evening.
Over the last four years this hotel gets better and better and the attention to detail is superb
A massive thank you to all the staff for making our break a success

What a kind review – thank you so very much. I am delighted to learn that you have stayed at the Lake four times, each stay better than the last; that is truly fantastic to hear.
All of your very positive feedback is truly appreciated; I will be pleased to pass on your wonderful comments to the ‘hardworking team’ that we have here. None of which would be possible without them.

Thank you again for your kind words, I do hope that we have the pleasure of your company again.

Great views from our lake facing room.Wife loved the spa, both of us the walks. Attentive and efficient front of house staff.
Which leaves the food...First evening in the restaurant my vegetarian options were fine, but my wife's salmon risotto starter came c/w a few large bones and then her monkfish mains she found distinctly 'average'. The following night we tried the brasserie. Again, no complaints from me the veggie, however... A few others at nearby tables had chosen the Welsh Beefburger, my wife followed suit.Part way through the meal she pronounced it dry and overdone, verging on burnt, just as a fellow diner passed on his way to the bar. His partner, still at the table, wore a rather pained expression. It seems there was an uninvited guest in the lettuce. Had we not been in such a remote area, we might have gone looking for a takeaway.
Breakfast, next morning, we placed our order and then seemed to become invisible for 20 minutes. When it finally arrived,my wife's bacon was of a similar texture to her beefburger, whilst my egg[today singular], though it purported to be poached, was so hard it would have made a suitably bouncy[albeit somewhat misshapen]training aid for one of the many lovely dogs we met during our stay.
Would we return? No. Not when the Elan Valley boasts better scenery and a hotel with far superior food.
