“Always great.”
Reviewed 11 March 2014

We aren't regulars but if we fancy a good meal out this is one we always try to get a table at. They never fail to turn out a great meal at good prices. The staff are always helpful and attentive. It is worth trying but you may have to book as only an intimate space and it's popular

“Cosy pub near Machynlleth, Wales, with good Welsh food...”
Reviewed 30 December 2013

The Black Lion is a really pleasant family restaurant in Derwenlas which is a hamlet only a short distance from Machynlleth on the main road to Aberystwyth. For me it's one of the nicest eateries in the area. The food is fairly traditional but with some inspired surprises and a 'specials' board that, with the main menu, gives plenty of choice for even the most picky eaters. Guest ales are available and there is an acceptable wine list too. The cost is very reasonable and the ambiance is of a typical country inn of the 16th/17th century. There is a lovely log fire in cold weather and the overall impression is of a warm welcome. Probably a good idea to book a table in advance especially in the holiday season but worth a try even if you haven't done so and are hungry. There's quite a bit of history to the place all explained in the menu and, surprisingly, Derwenlas used to be a small sea port before the River Dyfi (Dovey) silted up. And they say the main road is haunted....but don't let that put you off!
(For info: From 1 Jan 2014 I will rate everything on a 'personal satisfaction' basis)

“Good food but for big appetites”
Reviewed 7 October 2013 via mobile

The place itself is quaint and cosy and there are a range of local ales to choose from. The meal itself was great but the portions were enormous. I couldn't even manage my main course let alone order a dessert. Prices were reasonable and they had a good variety of meals to choose from. Definitely worth booking a table here if your passing by though. A good hearty meal that v won't disappoint.

“Worth a detour”
Reviewed 7 October 2013

It really is worth a detour to eat at this pub. This is a lovely old fashioned pub with low ceilings. beams and a log fire. There is an extensive menu with an excellent choice. The food was delicious with generous portions, all being reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and attentive, even although they were busy and it was only Tuesday lunchtime.
