We booked a 4-day stay as Plas Llwyngwern in April this year on the strength of a stay last year. We had been very impressed by the local area and the house itself which is a beautiful, albeit slightly down-at-heel, country home. The business had changed hands since our last stay so we were expecting things to be different. Quite how different came as a bit of a surprise. The welcome from Cheryl, on our arrival, was warm and most welcoming. However it came as quite a shock when she wanted to be paid for the entire stay as soon as we were through the door. However, to be fair to her, she may have had some bad experiences in the past and wanted to make sure it didn’t happen again.
But, there was more. Instead of bath towels we had only been provided with hand towels – not a good start. Then we noticed a note taped to the headboard which instructed us to strip the beds on the morning of our departure. At breakfast next morning another note, taped to a trolley, requested diners to clear their tables after breakfast. To add insult to injury our hopes of a ‘full English’ were dashed when Cheryl announced that anyone who wanted could have a boiled egg to go with the fruit, cereal etc already in the dining room. We felt that Cheryl, who admitted that she hadn’t run a B&B before, needs to find out a little more about what potential customers expect.
This is a beautiful house and although most rooms are not en-suite it has a lot of character and the views from the house, as well as the extensive grounds are lovely. In addition the nearby CAT centre (Centre for alternative technology) – a five-minute walk away - is well worth a visit. So, I don’t want to put anyone off visiting I just want to forewarn them.
