We visited the restaurant after receiving a recommendation from the owners of a nearby guest house where we were on holiday. Good quality restaurants are, it seems, in short supply in this part of the Wales.
The restaurant is easy to find being located on the main through road in the small village of Pennal - a little way up estuary from Aberdovey. Glan yr Afon has its own parking area next to the restaurant.
Initial impressions were very good. Stylishly furnished with slate floors and oak tables, there are also areas with soft furnishings where you can wait while your table is being prepared for the meal. We didn't have to wait too long and were soon served with drinks and some nibbles which we opted for instead of starters. We found the Sea Bass and the Fish Stew main courses both excellent and the portion sizes were generous but too overly so that we couldn't fit in a dessert afterwards! I had the caramel cheesecake which was freshly made and would happily recommend as a tasty option.
I would describe the service and friendly and efficient. The proprietors, Glyn and Carina Davies plan to develop the upstairs area of the building and turn Glan Yr Afon into a hotel.
