Owner description: The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) has been inspiring visitors about sustainable practice for over 40 years. With seven acres of hands-on displays, examples of environmentally responsible building, renewable energy, organic gardens and kids’ holiday activities, there is something for everyone at CAT. Follow CAT’s interactive Zero Carbon Britain Trail to discover how to live enjoyably in a world with reduced emissions. Or, winding up through managed oak woodland, the Quarry Trail opens up never-before-seen areas of CAT and breathtaking views of the Snowdonia National Park. On special evenings, the Quarry After Dark programme allows guests to experience CAT after the visitor centre has closed. This diverse programme of events boasts live music, talks, late night tours, film screenings and exhibitions. Nestled in a historic slate quarry CAT site is a little uneven in places and a lot of the displays are outdoors so please wear sensible footwear and waterproof clothing. During the winter months we close the Cliff Railway and some of the outdoor trails due to the unpredictable weather, please keep an eye on our website for updated information.

We read the reviews prior to visiting so didn't really know what to expect. The place was fantastic; we walked around the very informative visitor centre for about 3 hours but could have stayed longer. If you are expecting shiny and corporate, forget it; this charity based organization is about the realistic presentation of information and is operated by very passionate people. The grounds were spiritually uplifting and the restaurant food was fresh and nutritious. We need people like this to give balance in this modern, use and abuse world. WONDERFUL!!

“Stupid pricing structure in the Cafe”
Reviewed 27 April 2014 via mobile

Visited over Easter and the place was pretty empty. Still as run down and rather depressing given the huge cost of the "University" buildings.
Cafe had the offer of Veggie Pizza and small salad but couldn't cope with request for two Pizzas and a large salad and quoted a ridiculous price so they lost the custom!
Staff are friendly and keen but they really have little of quality to work with.
Now running an offer of free admission for the year if you pay for one visit.
I remember the place when it started in the early seventies but it seems to have lost its way and is mostly a gardening exhibition and an expensive one at that.

“Build a Green Roof course”

A beautiful place with good teaching and GREAT food (including delicious vegan options.) If staying overnight in the WISE building be aware that there is very little storage space in the rooms.

“Great food at CAT”
Reviewed 29 March 2014

We love CAT food. Flavoursome vegetables in a great range of dishes, brilliantly enhanced by herbs & spices. Local, wholesome & Delicious. Our compliments to the chefs! Thank-you & see you in the summer.

“Has seen better times”
Reviewed 14 March 2014

If you have never been it has a few interesting ideas but is starting to look tired and unkempt. The shop has some nice items and the cafe is ok.
