As per the other reviews, don't go here to find either the perfect interior or luxury living - you won't get it. The location, however, is stunning.
This hotel is run by a team of outstanding Hosts (with a capital H), who cannot do enough to make guests feel at home. The Chef kept the restaurant open after hours to offer us a meal upon our late arrival and on another day (Sunday) he opened early to prepare breakfast because he would not allow us to leave on empty stomachs.
When I mentioned my back pain was not helped by my (perfectly suitable but slightly soft) bed, the lady at reception combined forces with the Chef and a maintenance man to make necessary (carpentry) adjustments to my bed so that I would be comfortable. And I was, sleeping like a log during our 2nd and 3rd nights. Where else do you get this kind of personal service and hospitality?
If you're looking for a welcoming 'home from home', this is the place for you.

Stayed one night in a family room - room very spacious and quiet, staff very friendly, drinks and food rates reasonable. However, the hotel is missing a certain wow factor, and I do wonder whether the recent building of an additional accomodation block has been undertaken at the cost of the original building (some areas of which don't appear to have been updated for 15+ years). Similarly, although reasonably priced, the food wasn't particularly great, and I would recommend eating out. Conversely, the location is outstanding and the grounds warrant particular merit.... so worth a one-night visit, but not one to return again and again.

My son, who is 12, and I have just returned from a long weekend staying at Plas Dolguog. This hotel is situated near to the town of Machynlleth in Powys. The hotel is located down a narrow drive about half a mile long. It is a very old building mainly dating from 1632. This is shown inside by the irregular floors and walls however it is very comfortable. I should also point out that it is haunted with 3 ghosts, not that we saw them, despite staying an extra night. Our first room was very spacious with a small enclosed balcony looking over the Dyfi valley. This room contained a double and single bed. We had to change rooms for our extra night into a twin single room, however again this was comfortable and very clean.
The food at the hotel was excellent with a wide choice of starters, mains and desserts. We ate there the first night as a test, and went back every night of our stay for something different. Vegetarians are well catered for and the chef can do additional options for vegans, gluten free etc as requested. Dining is in two areas: the original dining room at the front and a large conservatory at the rear which overlooks the Dyfi valley and extensive grounds.
We both said we would definitely return for future visits. The minor downsides are that it has a railway line running along the back. Last train is about 11pm, first is about 6.30am, but very infrequent despite this being called a 'Main Line'. We also had a problem with getting a consistent temperature from our shower however this added to the fun in some ways. Mobile phone coverage is a bit difficult but that applies to most of this area. For Vodafone you needed to go out onto the rear lawn. For O2, go out the front....

This location has absolutely loads to do in the vicinity, in fact we did two things a day plus a couple of hours on a glorious sandy beach. The hotel sits in a picturesque garden called Grandma's Garden which has won awards from David Bellamy for conservation etc.

Why 2 star ? Mainly because the hotel reception is not manned 24/7. As everyone goes out during the day this really doesn't matter. We think it should be at least 3 and possibly 4.

The main Hotel is a converted country house, and it still retains many features which give a nice atmosphere. We stayed in the Annexe known as "The Stables". Our room on the ground floor was nicely decorated and well equiped but I was not impressed with the cleanliness.
The function we where there for we enjoyed immensly, the decoration of the rooms was very good and the food was delicous-compliments to the chef! Our hosts where some of the most pleasant people we have met travelling and couldn't do enough for us.

Nice bar, great food but a real shame about the room; poor decor, cobwebs, cold and a not very clean cold shower.....

Very disappointed with the hotel. We found it to be cold and and shabby. The rooms had a really bad shower. It could be a really nice place if it had a makeover. We went in January so it probably explains why it was so cold and uncomfortable.
