“excellent well worth a visit”

A really good example of national trust property, lots of parking very near although the walk up is quite steep . The staff very helpful and friendly and we arrived to get on a tour into parts of the castle not usually open to the public which was a real bonus. the castle is very interesting and the tea room excellent, we didnt have a lot of time to spare so didnt get to gardens but even so it was a place well worth a stop and we will return to do the rest, worth the money for castle and view from the terrace alone.

“Great place, beautiful grounds”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

Enjoyed another nat trust location, castle in good condition/state, lovely gardens and grounds, well organised parking. Great day out, grounds and attention to detail with planting amazing. Have never seen such a magnificent display of wisteria. Beautiful flower beds very well kept. Also saw holiday cottage which looked great (from outside) in grounds. Before visiting inside castle, enjoyed cup of tea in courtyard outside, peacocks wandering around and male peacock willing to show off with display too! Would recommend, well worth the visit.

“A treasure not to be missed.”
Reviewed 5 June 2014 via mobile

A wonderful example of the excellent work of the National Trust. The gardens are absolutely stunning ...if the weather is kind a whole day could be spent strolling amongst the beautiful grounds.
Two reasonable cafés......the one in the castle rather dark and gloomy but the cafe in the South garden offers a wonderful sun trap and well worth the walk....a truly lovely day out.

“one of national Trust's treasures”

everything is brilliant and the topiary awe inspiring! The castle very interesting with the Clive(of India) museum an interesting extra. The formal gardens give both joy and exercise and their creation a wonder to be seen.

“well worth the effort”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

your entrance to the castle is a stead up hill walk ,and the castle inside is easy enough for most people, but the gardens do take some doing if the old legs are not in the best order.
But that said and done ,take your time ,sit and enjoy the views and slowly you can have a day out to remember.
Well worth the entry fee
