“just what we needed, great stay”
Reviewed 30 July 2008

I thought I would write a review as we have stayed at the Royal Oak quite a few times and some of the reviews below dont represent the Oak that we know. Yes I think that some of the rooms still need refurbishing but they are cheaper ( i think theyre called standard rooms) and there are plenty of other lovely refurbished rooms to choose from - the online booking page on the website shows the difference. We have always found the staff freindly and helpfull and the food and whole feel of the place is great. I have had a problem with the free wireless access once as the walls seem a bit thick but reception sent me up a wire to plug the laptop into the network connection in the room. The other time (different room) the wireless worked fine. So in conclusion its a great place that I would recomend.

  • Liked — clean and trendy bedrooms (contemporary & classic) great downstairs
  • Disliked — the "standard rooms" need refurbishing but are cheaper than the other refurbished rooms

This was my first stay at the hotel. I have mixed feelings. The bar/ restaurant is very pleasant, breakfast was good and the a la carte food was superb. All in all downstairs is fine. The room however (101) was poor quality for the price. The bathroom was shabby and the decor old and in need of refurbishment. I understand this is underway so my advice is check if you are getting a new room or an old one. The old rooms should be reflected in the price.
There was no local TV, the channels did not match what they should have been, and the walls were quite thin. It's not the worst hotel I've been in, the location is very good for access to Welshpool (probably a downside on Saturdays being opposite the kebab shop), the food and drink is good, maybe continued refurbishment will make it all live upto the somewhat unrealistic website.

very disapointed with our stay at this hotel. The web site is a ridiculous comparison to what you end up getting!! The most unfriendliest staff i have ever come across, i have a disability but nobody would help carry my bag to the room so was forced to struggle up myself. So from now on ive been booking into local B&B's with exellent results at half the cost. AVOID THIS HOTEL

Hi,

I just stayed 3 days at Welshpool Royal Oak Hotel. I'll like those kinds of old type of hotels. The staff was nice and good selection of beer at the bar.
We had a late night arrive and they prepared some sandwiches (we asked for in advance). My room was clean but had a "old" smell, which reminded me the smell of paraffin. The smell would comes from the old wall, old carpets...old furniture.

Rgds,
Krisztian

Just spent one night B&B at Royal oak. Hotel very nicely refurbished throughout. Bedroom well furnished and clean and comfortable. Breakfast had plenty of choice and good quality food. Bar served several varieties of real ale and reasonably priced. Staff were very friendly, helpful but unobtrusive. Asked for some extra milk and the member of staff bought us a jug of fresh milk to our room- a nice touch (and much better than the UHT tubs left on the tea tray).Overall an extremely pleasant stay- would definitely return if visiting welshpool again. A bit expensive but you get what you pay for.

hi, just thought i would post a review of this hotel unfortunately not quite what we expected. We booked this hotel after veiving the lovely examples of the room and bar area only to find the hotel looked nothing like the artist's impressions. when i booked over the phone the receptionist was quite avasive when asked if i could book a clasic room(refurb title) and didn't mention that was terminoly for something that wasn't yet availible.when we checked in she was very polite and helpfull. Although she had a credit card swipe she also insisted on payment for the room approx£100 pounds i did find this quite unusual also i noticed that the bar had not been refurbed yet???? when we went up to the room there was a cuple of tiles missing of the bathroom wall and you could see it desperately needed some tlc. My wife was quite upset at the thought of spending the night there so we made a sharp about turn and got a full refund no problem at all only problem was we had to drive around when it was getting late and make a few hasty phone call's to organise a lovely b&b just down the road.

The Hotel us gone a major refurbishment during 2006 reopening fully in November 06. All downstairs areas have been transformed totally.
Upstairs 15 of the 25 rooms and bathrooms have been totally refurbished in classic and contemporary styles, the remainder being done later this year.
