“Sharing Our Apartment With Cockroaches”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2013

We rented Apartment Three for 14 nights. The unit has good spacious rooms but was grubby, and in much need of refurbishment. That, however, paled into insignificance when on the second night of our stay we saw several large cockroaches scuttle across the lounge floor. On each succeeding night we had the same experience. We approached the Complex Manager and explained that we were very unhappy about the situation. She was off-hand and made us feel that we were fussing about nothing. On the second occasion my husband spoke to her, she said that she might have the apartment sprayed that afternoon, but no spraying took place and over the following days we simply used our own insecticide which we had bought from a local supermarket.
Having spoken to family who live in Australia we realise that these insects are endemic but buildings should be treated with sprays and traps regularly, in order to prevent infestation. Clearly no such treatment programme had recently been carried out in this block.
I would neither recommend this accommodation, nor will I ever stay there again. It was ghastly.

Room Tip: Be very suspicious if there are no photos of bathrooms. They are the most used parts of rental accom...

Stayed at the apartment for 4 nights. On arrival greeted by a very helpful staff member. The location was just perfect and the apartment was very spacious nicely decorated clean and fresh. Beautiful view of the beach across the road. Pool/Spa area just perfect. Will definately stay there again. Plenty of glasses/plates cooking equipment. Great bonus with 3 toilets. Very new decor and fridge washing machine and dryer all clean and very modern.

Room Tip: Have a good chat with Shari on the reception desk.

We rented Apartment 23 for seven nights. The unit was great for a family with a great view and good sized deck, and in a fantastic position.

The unit is let down on a few fronts which was a surprise given the price.

The unit had generally poor cleanliness, particularly the wardrobe areas which were grotty and had to be wiped out.

Facilities are good. Unit is well equipped but many items are either too old, in need of maintenance or not very functional. Furniture was good but bathrooms and laundry were very worn out.

The positives: can't beat the location, apartments are pretty large.

The negative: I was amazed at the lack of cleanliness. I'm not even sure we had fresh towels. I had to wash all the dishes as most had food stuck on them, I washed our towels as some had grime marks. I'm just hoping we had fresh bedding. There was dirt and sand on the floors and the furniture and rug was just grotty.

It's such a shame as the location is awesome and the apartment is quite big. But you can't forgive such low standards of cleanliness.

Having nice accommodation is a big part of your holiday and these apartments did not disappoint. The apartments are in an amazing location, overlooking the beach yet only a short walk to the Corso/ferry. Everything we needed was in these immaculate and spacious apartments in the luxurious block with swimming pool and tennis courts. Cannot fault these apartments in any way (and I'm really fussy!!!). Lovely and helpful lady Shari at reception who is really friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be back!!!

We have stayed here twice - each time in June. This year's room was nicer than last year's. Better decorated and less tired. This year's apartment was No 18. You are right across the road from Manly beach and 5 minutes walk from the Corso shopping area so the location is terrific. Service is not great - these apartments are all individually owned and there is a serviced office (9-5 only) to check you in and out. Don't expect gracious hotel service. The list of things you can't do and the stated penalty for infringing them is long - and you feel a bit like a naughty child as you even read them! And there is nothing in the rooms in terms of food - you will need to bring everything with you. Finally there is no wifi at all...which is very poor for a place that charges as much as this. But if you don't mind that, want a nice warm pool and a beach side location , nice balconies and 2 or 3 bedrooms then this is fine. That is why we go back, but unless they get wifi we won't return.

MANLY SHORES - OCEAN ROYALE

We rented the 2 bedroom flat for 4 weeks during the off season starting August 28, 2012. The place is a bit tired and the beds a bit saggy but otherwise the flat itself met our requirements. We took the flat, which was $1500 a week compared to Manly Shores other 2 bedroom offerings at $1200 per week (off peak rates, and negotiable) because it had a heated pool for my wife to do her exercises in.

The day after we arrived Manly Shores began a renovation of the pool. This work started at 7.30am with the screech of a tile cutting machine and continued spasmodically during the day. We were told by Manly Shores management that this activity would last three to five DAYS. Four WEEKS later we were still being woken at daybreak. Occasionally we could use the pool in the cool of the afternoon after the sun (and workmen) had left it. But it was too cold at that time, so effectively we had no use of the pool which was promised, and which formed the basis of our decision.

We talked to Manly Shores management about compensation for this, and the manager agreed that there should be some compensation, but having received our prepayment in full for the 4 weeks rent they had little incentive to do anything about it. And did not, nor do they respond to messages.

Our advice for anyone preparing to rent through Manly Shores, and in particular for Ocean Royale: speak to alternative Agents in Manly so you have competing prices, do not prepay before you have checked out that everything is working. Do not believe what management may tell you. Judging by the car park, there were very few other short term renters in September so you’ve got to question whether an advance booking is necessary at all. Certainly there is no need to prepay.
