“ONLY IF YOU ARE DESPERATE!!”
Reviewed 3 February 2012

We had to make an urgent booking for one night due to attendening a funeral in Manly.
The location was perfect as was the view over Manly beach, not that the veiw was an important facture for this trip. That is where the pluses finish, we booked a Deluxe King Room and from the photograph on the web site an onsuite. What we got was two single beds with shared facilities. Which consisted of a corner bath with shower and toilet, we are not sure how many rooms it serviced. As we entered the room we could see a bucket to catch water from a huge hole in the ceiling where the plaster had fallen. So we upgraded at additional to a room with an ensuite. If you look up in the dictionary the meaning of the word Deluxe is RICH or SUMPTUOUS, SUPERIOR in QUALITY just use the opposite words. We would say it was last painted 30 years ago,the windows where very dirty, the roller blind was impossible to pull down. We even had to clean the toilet bowl as it was filfy from the last person who had used it. Everywhere was daggy and dirty through out the building and the service very indifferent. The towels where fresh and clean and of good quality. It is Pub accomodation and ended up costing $160.00 for the night, a Hotel that rates itself 3 Stars should at least be clean and well
presented. If you are desperate as we where then okay, but be warned!! There are better hotels out there at a simular price.

First of all, this hotel consists of rooms above a pub right across the street from Manly beach. It really should be listed as being in Manly, not Sydney. Manly is in the Sydney metropolitan area, but you would never stay at the Steyne as a way to stay in Sydney. You would stay at the Steyne to have a cheap beach holiday in Manly.

The rooms are basic but clean and comfortable. Some (including the one we stayed in) have en suite facilities, some not. This is clearly noted on the hotel's reservations page. Our room was generously proportioned but under-furnished . . . a cheap table would have covered some of the wide floorspace and been a nice convenience.

The hotel rooms are literally sandwiched between a busy pub (ground floor) and a nightclub (rooftop), right on the main pedestrian business district of Manly, across the street from the busiest stretch of the beach. It simply doesn't get more central -- or more noisy. If you want a quiet place to stay, this isn't it. If you want to come in from the beach, take a quick shower, and head upstairs to the rooftop bar, this is your place.

One caution: the beach lifeguards start warning swimmers to stay between the flags at around 7 am from loudspeakers located directly in front of your windows. This will wake you up. There's not much the hotel could reasonably be expected to do about this situation. Just don't be surprised.

Overall, we were not impressed, but we were satisfied. We got what we wanted: a Manly beach break right in the middle of things. But we didn't get a lot of rest.

Had a look at the rooms here and they are not nice at all. Better off staying in one of the motels/guesthouses.

We arrived prior to the check in time and the receptionist went out of her way to have our room ready there and then. The location is great for enjoying Manly's beach and bars/restaurants but as the previous reviewer mentioned, not ideal at the weekends.

The Steyne is a popular night time spot with various bars taking up the vast space. We were there for Anzac Day which is a public holiday so obviously everyone was making the most of the Monday off work! Luckily we were happy to get into the spirit and spent a fun evening in the courtyard. However if you have children or want a peaceful night's sleep, I wouldn't recommend it. With it being on the main stretch of the beach, we were woken by people on their way home form the various clubs in the area. We could also hear the surrounding clubs on Saturday night until the early hours.

We had a double room with ensuite but I think a lot of the rooms share a bathroom. Our room was facing the beach which I would recommend as the rooms at the back face the courtyard which is a popular bar. It's very basic and our room could have done with a spring clean - lots of dust in the carpet suggested it hadn't been hoovered for a while & it looked a bit grubby. I put it down to us arriving early but this was clearly more than a week's worth of dust. The shower was brilliant though, the beds comfy and it felt pretty secure. This was the most inexpensive hotel I could find in Manly, which is notoriously expensive. For the price I would stay again but I'd take earplugs and maybe ask for the room to have another clean...

Its a basic small pub room in a great location. But dont expect to pay pub pricesas this is super expensive Manly! However its way better than a backpackers as there are new clean beds and linen, tv, air con and bar fridge. Get a room with a balcony onto the beach if you can. I definitely would not want a room facing into the interior courtyard unless you want to hear pub noise till 3am. The noise is a real issue here and I wouldn't advise staying on a Friday/Sat night unless you are partying hard as you will need the earplugs they provide at check in! Hotel is undergoing major renovations and it feels very friendly and safe. the staff are pleasant and its miles away from the rough old pub it use to be. Would have been better if they had bedside reading lamp and guest soap - small details but for the price its not much to expect.
