We stayed at the Rydges airport hotel prior to an international flight and the best thing that could be said for it was its excellent proximity to the terminal. Now I know that one should never expect much of airport hotels, but as a reasonably expensive example of the breed, and having stayed in the chain's hotels elsewhere without issue, I did expect a little more from Rydges.
First up was the vexing problem of not being able to fit on the crowded complimentary shuttle bus from the Syd domestic terminal with our family of four. The driver was apologetic but offered no alternative (other than waiting another half an hour for it to return) and we ended up needing to get a $25 taxi instead. When we pointed this out to reception there was no offer of even a free drink to recompense. Anyway we retired to our very standard room before venturing downstairs to try our luck at the bar. We were in luck, as it was happy hour, which ran until 7.00 pm. However upon trying to capitalise on this discount opportunity at 6.53, I was told by the bar person that happy hour was over. I pointed to the sign that clearly indicated happy hour ran until 7.00, but no dice. I then resorted to showing him the time on my iPhone to which i received the somewhat astounding response - 'Oh no, we only run on hotel time' Hotel time!!? Is this a time zone that i have been previously unaware of? After arguing the point for several minutes he eventually relinquished with the admonishment 'but there will be no more after that'. Not great from any hotel, let alone Rydges, and therefore certainly cannot recommend it other than for its location.
