As my first hotel stay on my first visit to Australia, I really wanted the Rydges Parramatta to be an amazing experience and it wasn't. That's not to say that it wasn't good, because it was. It was perhaps just a little quirky for my taste.
First, check in was smooth as could be, and Matt at the front desk was at once polite and professional. He had me in my room in minutes flat, and over the next days of my stay never missed an opportunity to greet me. Generally speaking, the room is decent; clean, pretty large if sort of bland. Everything worked well, save for the shower head, which wouldn't stay any higher than the lowest position so I had to duck to get under it. They are also a little stingy on towels - two bath towels, one hand towel and one washcloth.
Room service was both quick and tasty; the staff who delivered it were friendly and professional. When I left the tray outside the door upon finishing the meal, it was gone in short order.
The exercise facility was poor. Like many older hotels, this place spent tens of thousands of dollars on an indoor pool and hot tub. Like most of those other hotels, they've likely found the expense of upkeep far outweighs the amount of use they receive. And, since the 'fitness center' shares space with the pool here, it is sadly ignored. First, it's tiny - there's an old plate weight set, a treadmill, exercise bike, rowing machine, and my choice, an elliptical machine. While the others seemed to work okay, my machine was broken - it didn't detect motion, so it would shut down after about 2 minutes of pedaling. I made do, but it was less than good. Because of proximity to the pool, much of the floor in the exercise room was wet, too. Finally, there were no towels (you have to get a swimming towel at the front desk if you want one for working out). I have a difficult time believing you couldn't buy 100 hand towels for the fitness center very reasonably and not have them all disappear at once. Maybe some anti-bacterial wipes, too? And a water purifier?
Lastly, the hotel is right across the street from the horse track, which was both cool and interesting. Returning to the hotel after a car tour in Sydney (check out Able2Tour.com if you ever need a car & driver anywhere in Sydney!), the place was rocking. There was an 80's rock band playing just outside my window (they were excellent!), and lots of inebriation around the property. I enjoyed the music from my room and, because they ended at a reasonable time, slept like a baby.
I would stay here again, and would happily bump them to four stars if they'd make a couple of minor modifications.
