“Love this place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2014

We have stayed here several times, both in the hotel rooms and in the cabins. Great place. Great folks running the place and a fabulous restaurant. The hotel rooms are just average but always clean. It's the atmosphere here and the location that I love. We will be back.

We spent 4 nights at the smokehouse lodge. The rooms were nice, I really loved the hardwood floors in them and the beds were comfortable with lots of pillows. The restaurant at the lodge was amazing, if you like country cooking it was our favorite restaurant in the whole town. There were so many things for our kids to do right at the lodge. You can swim, play tennis or basketball, play on the playgrounds, or just sit and relax in one of the many outdoor areas and eat some yummy homemade ice cream from the restaurant. We liked our stay so much, we are planning on making the smokehouse lodge a family tradition.

The music is top notch as the willingness of the staff were fantastic. It is tough to provide a great experience given the hotel and grounds are not very well maintained. The pictures and amenities included on the website are a bit deceiving as the lake is very very small, the tennis courts are not playable, the rooms have an odor, the keys to the rooms sometimes do not work properly leaving you stranded outside, the toilet was scary loose on the floor and the it continued to be stopped up on a two night stay and I am unsure of the cleanliness given the sheets are not changed each night and the cracks and crevasses are full of bugs and dust. Again, the staff was super and very accommodating so no complaints there. They just need to invest in the property.

So sorry for your less than great experience. Being one of the family owners of the property, I do have some issues with your comments and the way you worded your review; here are my comments.

We do not misrepresent our property with our photos, these photos are for real of the actual feature shown; no photo can look as closely as a person does in person. No doubt, we have proplems here and there all over the property; it's over 20 acres, and there are alot of elements to keep up to date and repaired. We are in the middle of upgrading all the facilities now, and have not reached everything yet, such as the one tennis court you took the picture of; we have two courts and the other one has been resealed and painted, but you failed to mention that this one is updated. No, everything here is not new, and we have reinvested many hundreds of thousands of dollars back into the property, and do so on a annual basis.

Also, I can assure you that we do not leave sheets unwashed as you mentioned, except for stay overs, as this is part of our "Green" program; of not wasting water and chemicals washing stay over bed linens and towels, unless requested by the guest.

We offer so much more than any other typical motel property that I won't apologize for some of the "FREE" use areas and items not being brand new, no other property even offers these features to start with, and we do at no charge to our guest. So the question is this, do you want to stay in a box in the middle of a parking lot like most motel properties, or do you want to have the option to safly walk and enjoy a property that has a 20 acre campus consisting of large grass yard areas and trees, and yes a small lake that offers free fishing and campfires?

You can stay at our competition for the same price, and walk around their parking lot for recreation, or you can stay with us and have the use of over 20 acres of outdoor area and facilities for free; it's your choice.

Liked the décor, but the rooms could use some upgrading. Would stay there again. On site restaurant had O.K. food. Not good enough for thirteen dollars each. Was an overnight trip for visiting and hiking at nearby natural areas.,

Thank you for your comments. It apperas that you didn't stay in one of our recently updated rooms. We are updating everything in the room, and you could not help but notice that if you stayed with us. The $13 dollar per person price you mentioned for the food was probably the buffet, where it is all you can eat 3 meats, 8 hot vegetables, 21 item salad bar, homemade soup, homemade cornbread, homemade sweet cake for dessert, and a host of condiments for your use. Some people cannot eat that much, and get frustrated with the price, but it is well worth the price for what we offer there. If you are unhappy with the price, you could have ordered from the extensive menu where we have plenty of items starting at $1.95 and up, over 50 meals for $5.95 to 8.95. There is no excuse for being dissapointed in our prices when we have such a range to choose from, and we always overserve the food so you get plenty no matter what you order.

The wireless connections for the cabins never work 98% of the time. It's the only thing that spoils the cabin experience. Now matter how many times you mention it to them they never fix it, but I like the cabin's so much I tolerate it... but I tell them about it every time!

We are in the process of upgrading the internet connection down at the cabins. Charter will be dropping in a new internet connection that we can broadcast to the other cabins. Will have this done before the end of July. Thanks for your comments.

This was our first time at the Smokehouse Best Western. Location was the deciding factor in our choice. The combination of motel, restaurant, gift shop, museum, and lounge with live music all in the same complex was unique to my experience. Our room was at the far end from the restaurant/lounge and quite comfortable. The hardwood floors were a little grimy, otherwise everything was clean. Internet worked very well. Bed was comfortable. In and out was no problem.
