“Great Location”
Reviewed 23 February 2014

My daughter's wedding was at Dunbar House and we thought rather than travel home or back to the city we would stay at Hotel and what a good decision. There were 3 other groups from the Wedding how did the same.
The Hotel is in great location anyway. Rooms are large and of a very high standard with a wonderfully large and well equipped bathroom. We didn't have any noise problems. We would come back for a breakaway from our normal lives as the Hotel feels like it's a million miles from anywhere but so close to Sydney. The day-trippers add a bit of character to the location. Only problems were TV reception as some channels had the digital freeze occurring and parking can be a issue as they seem to cater for locals who park on-site when going to the Pub side of the business, other than that everything was good.

The location is incredible, the rooms were very nice, the public spaces are very nice and the food is great. This however is not a boutique hotel, the catering seems dedicates to the transient populataion ariving onmasse by ferry and the service in the hotel itself was far from the standard expected.

I'm only going to comment on the terrace restaurant. Why play bad loud music at 6pm when people want to chill? Why do you employ chefs who can't cook? Why do you have a terrible wine list? Because you sit back after the refurb and think the view justifies the costs to the customer. In a word, rubbish.

On a trip with my husband and our 3 childrens, we were at first thrilled by the view, the design, the hype of the place. But be aware that on Friday, Saturday and Sundays, you won't be able to sleep in this hotel before early in the morning. The rest of the week, the restaurant was closed at 9 pm and there is not a lot of other restaurants in Watsons Bay so plan to eat in the city before you return to the hotel. Last but not least the service is friendly but really REALLY extremely poor.

Room Tip: don't choose a "room with a harbor view" if you want to sleep !

My wife and I stayed at the Watsons Bay hotel for our 31st wedding anniversary on the night of the 7th of January. We paid $300 plus for our room and I specifically asked for a room that looked back at the harbour not realising or being informed that it was also directly above the beer garden. The continuous level of music from downstairs did not stop until late into the evening. You could only lock the outside balcony door with a cabin hook. Getting sleep was difficult. All night there was a flashing green smoke alarm just to the right of our bed. When I eventually got to sleep I was woken early in the morning by a staff member hosing off the deck with an electric hosing machine. Breakfast. For the amount of money I paid I would have expected something hot. No chance. Breakfast was accompanied by the blaring sound of the Doobie Bros and Rodriguez [a song about his drug dealer titled 'Silverman' A waste of time, sleep and money. Overpriced with no competition, awful.

Room Tip: May try the southern side but even then the smoke alarm would make sleep difficult

Having read some of the reviews didn't have high expectations about this hotel but overall really enjoyed our stay.

Location is awesome. It was our first taste of Sydney and the area/setting of the hotel is just phenomenal. Peaceful first thing in the morning with dog walkers and people swimming and strolling about, then later on it turned a lot livelier and busier but the atmosphere was always friendly.

First impressions of the hotel itself weren't great as the reception area is gloomy, cheap looking and a bit shabby. But just beyond the reception is a stunning open lounge/restaurant/breakfast area which was a lovely place to take a morning coffee. Our room was a loft room with space at the top for kids and an open bathroom. Very stylishly laid out, airy, comfy bed and it had all the amenities. However with just a bit of money spent it could have been great - some of the furnishings and design seemed a bit cheap/worn and while I don't think it was dirty, the place didn't exude sparkling cleanliness.

Staff were friendly, let us check in early and sorted out some taxis. Slightly odd arrangement of the place being unmanned beyond 9pm - added to the air of gloominess about the lobby - but maybe this is normal is Australia.

Had a coffee in the morning in the adjoining beach bar, food looked good and there was a great atmosphere.

All in all a really nice stay. With a bit more money spent and TLC this place could be fantastic.

Room Tip: Loft suite was quite nice.

As a local, we have shared this venue with many overseas visitors. The location & views are iconic. Yet sadly this establishment is not the same since its change of ownership. The renovations are lovely, but less casual & more hoity-toity. The service is shocking. We recently dined there for lunch & had to ask twice for the music volume to be lowered - we were not enjoying the experience at all. One positive: nice lunch menu & the food never disappoints. But enamel dinnerware? Umm. Not sure we will be rushing back anytime soon.
