“Charming”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 January 2012

Beechworth is a place where you can see some different sights: gold mines, prison, charming shops, star watching, koalas, kangaroos and vineyards. There are also some excellent biking routes with excellent hills for the toughest bikers.
In the midst of it all is the Old Priory, 200 meters from the main street. It is a low cost dormitory with varying sized rooms with shared toilets and showers in the hallway. But as such very charming and peaceful. With grating floors, leaking windows, all sorts of different chairs on the terraces and faded interior it still beats any modern equivalent. Children would find it interesting exploring different floors.
We had breakfast, lunch and dinner served in the shared breakfast room on the first floor and we loved it. But I do not know if they normally serve food. We pre-ordered it before we came to the Old Priory.
Some of the rooms were quite small and lacked furniture, but we just went to other unoccupied rooms and took a chair. And I guess they would have given us one if we had asked for it.

Room Tip: Room vary in size and configuration. Ask for options if possible.

I travelled to Beechworth for a friends 30th birthday, there were about 30 of us that had travelled from Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. The old priory suited exactly what we needed, a place for all of us to stay together whether we were in coulples or singles as it had private rooms or rooms with 4 or 5 beds. they provide a basic breafast which considering how cheap it is it isn't necessarry. I would definatley stay there again if I was going down with a group of friends.

Room Tip: If you seek privacy, don't choose the old chapel room as it's right next to the front desk.

A great place to stay in a beautiful old town. We often struggle to find rooms or affordable apartments for our family of 5.

Reasonably priced, comfortable beds, and the kids had an excellent time exploring the old halls and passageways.

Linen and bathrooms nice and clean. Room cool on a 40 degree day. Great to be able to walk into town for dinner, many other hotels too far out of town.

Only negatives were the diffulculty in trying to check in (no one at recepetion or answering phone, although when they did come they were very friendly) and the dust on the crockery and glassware.

We stayed here for one night during a weekend trip to Beechworth. It was a nice old house with a sense of history to it. The room was small but tidy, but had plenty of blankets, an electric blanket and a heater. Good thing, since the house was quite cold and draughty. They had a log fire going on in a room in the basement which was nice. The bathrooms were, however, freezing cold. Breakfast was included but was very basic. The price was good compared to other places in Beechworth.

We stayed in the 2 bedroom self contained unit which was comfortable and had all the basics needed. The best feature of the room is the building its in. The grounds are beautiful and all the common areas of the building are well kept and full of historical information. The staff are friendly and you feel like you have stayed there before. The location is fantastic as well, just one street behind the main street of Beechworth.

We cooked dinner in the room during our stay as there was snow on the ranges and abit too cold to take my 14 month old daughter out and about at night. The room was basically clean but attention was needed in the detail, the cutlery and plates were dirty, the double bed and manchester were well past their luxury phase and the corners of the rooms were a collection of all things that had once been there. On a controversial note, and after much debate and attempts to be reasonable, we werent the only ones staying in the room.

I only say this after numerous incidences and no logical explanation. The first incidence sent my daughter screaming and running in fear after facing the blank wall across from the bathroom. The second was a conversation I had with what I thought was my friend whilst i was in the bathroom, only to find my friend in the loungeroom without having been near it. The third was the unbearable hot temperature we both endured whilst in our beds only to have one arm at all times frozen and could not locate the source of the heat or the chill. The fourth was the sound that sent both myself and my friend out of bed only to stare at each other and see the bookcase in the room be moved. I hope a sceptic can provide logical explanations to our accounts but our research on returning home turned up more accounts from previous travellers including a cranky old nun that im blaming for scaring my daughter.

The old priory is a good place to stay overall and with alittle attention to detail in the cleanliness, would be fantastic.

From the outside, the place looks gorgeous. It's quite a pretty building and a few nice touches with the big heavy door (original, I assume) and some antique furniture.

Front desk was unattended, so we rang the two numbers provided to get someone to come down. No answer on either. We loitered for a while with another guest awaiting check-in before trying the phones again. The staff member came to greet us and did little more than shove a key in our direction and point us up the staircase.

Walking through the halls, you'll see that every room is about 8ft x 6ft give or take, and has either rickety bunk beds or a double bed crammed in against a wall. None of the linen matches or even looks like it might have been recently purchased.

Our room was an 8x6 cell, with two sets of bunk beds placed in an L shape at the back and side. This leaves about 2 square meters of space to stand in the room, next to the dusty and broken nightstand. No phone, no television, no towels, no soaps, no guest book and one tiny little column heater. The door did not shut as the bunk bed obstructed the doorway. We managed to lift and move the bed far enough to get the door closed and locked so we could have a look around.

We found the shared bathoom and were not impressed. The towels w found looked ratty, old and again did not match at all. the shower/tub was rusted almost beyond recognition and looked filthy. The bathrooms in general were not clean and I would not use them unless it was a dire emergency.

Needless to say, we found another motel in town and checked out of the Old Priory as soon as we could.

To their credit, they refunded us in full, including the booking fee, without us having to ask. We just told them we weren't happy and left it at that. Makes me wonder if they've had this problem before?

We booked for a twin room and what we got was absolutely nothing like the website. Dirty, poor service and I would definitely not go back.

Dear 'Not Happy',
At The Old Priory we appreciate all feedback good & bad and have endeavoured to rectify the items you addressed in your posting.
I am happy to report that we have conducted extensive renovations replacing carpets, painting, re enamelling bath tubs and the purchase of new furniture for our guests rooms and lounge areas.
Our levels of accommodation vary from budget accommodation to ensuite rooms with open fires which maybe would have been more suitable for your stay.
We invite you to stay with us and enjoy the "breat of fresh air" the changes have brought to our beautiful Old Priory!
Regards,
Pam Bell

We enjoyed our stay at the Old Priory. We were staying in an ensuite room (Miners cottage) and found it to be clean and tidy. Our breakfast was left in the fridge each day, however, given the local produce that abounds everywhere we were disappointed to see that none of what we were given was local, not even the honey for the toast! They never claimed that it would be, but it would have been a nice touch. There are 2 ensuite rooms, only one has a fireplace, so I would recommend asking for this room. We were assigned the other, even though no other people were staying there that weekend. We had no issues with the accommodation and services, and all staff we met were friendly and helpful. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for the ensuite room with the fireplace
