My partner and I stayed in the Linaker Nurses Quarters. Although the room was comfortable, we were unfortunately woken up around 1.00am by a large group of people. The noise only increased and, around 2.00am music was played extremely loudly. When we called the after hours manager at 2.30am, we failed to get a response. We left a detailed voice message about the noise. Shortly afterwards we received a text from the manager asking us if there was a problem. At this point we were in no mood to have to explain the situation by text. When the same manager was informed of all of this the morning after, he only sought to provide excuses for the miscommunication, and was seemingly oblivious to anything that had transpired. A far better after-hours management system is required.

The hotel is situated in idyllic, quiet, lovely gardens.

Booked a standard room which was OK for an overnight stay, but perhaps a little too compact for a couple if staying for more than one night. The room, however, was well equipped, despite its size.

Enjoyed a swim in the pool which was very refreshing!

Free Wi-Fi and a simple, but adequate breakfast was included in the price.

Where do I start.....Once we actually found this place it certainly had some charm, and so much unrealized potential. It felt a bit like being in the twilight zone. We stayed at the ?newly opened? Linaker Art Deco Nurses Quarters, which IS apparently part of the above George Kerferd Hotel, but is completely separate. Both places are in the grounds of the old Mayday Hills Lunatic asylum, but difficult to find as the old roads inside the place do not register on GPS. There is not much signage once you get in there either, and we weren't the only ones driving around and around derelict buildings wondering what on earth we had done and where we were going. The only prominent signage is for the ghost tours.......twilight zone or the shining, take your pick. We finally realized we had to check in at the George Kerford Hotel - had to park a long way away, then had to go back and find the nurses quarters - non existent signage again and much frustration. We finally found our deluxe queen suite on the third floor.....a sitting room, bedroom and bathroom. Rooms are lovely, well presented, great linen. Air conditioning did not work...a phone call did fix this - apparently the whole system had not yet been turned on. The whole place is fascinating - although there is a "tree map", there is not a map of the actual old facility, although there are some sign/information boards as you wander around. Much of the gardens appear in disrepair; the grass needed mowing, there was a big broken piece of machinery in front of the nurses quarters, as well a massive dead cut down tree that was being chainsawed into twigs..... Some of the old buildings now appear to be privately owned, and the local council use some. There is also a very scary "spa" inside the old "surgeons quarters?". Think dark green walls, closed old wooden doors, and a creaky hallway leading to an old staircase (must be another horror movie) So much potential here but seemed so confused with stuff happening all over the place. The George Kerford Hotel is bright and modern, the restaurant menu sounded good and a complimentary breakfast is offered there in the morning. We went for a drink after finally getting into our room but the bar man was having such difficulty tapping the keg we gave up and went into town.......I hope they can consolidate what they have here - it is a fascinating place and good value but really confused.

Room tip: Just ask the locals for the Lunatic Asylum......

Hi Linda,

Thank you for your review and for your feedback.

We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed the presentation of our rooms, considered us good value for money and that you saw the great potential we hold. We are however, dismayed to hear of the confusion and frustration you experienced during your stay with us. Please accept our unreserved apologies.

We can confirm we are a relatively new family run business, having opened in 2013. We agree our unique historic setting provides much potential (and many challenges!) and we are continuously working to improve our guest experience.

Our aim is to provide guests with relaxing and enjoyable getaways from start to finish, and we sincerely regret we fell short on this occasion. We have taken your feedback seriously (as we do with all constructive criticism), and have responded to your concerns below.

While separate to the George Kerferd building, The Linaker Hotel is very much a part of our business. To clarify for the public reading this review, our Linaker and George Kerferd Buildings are nestled within 40 hectors of historic gardens and situated a short distance of 100 meters from each other. Both the Linaker and George Kerferd Hotels have access to our facilities (of particular note, a swimming pool, tennis court, sauna and our excellent onsite restaurant and bar). Each building has a unique style and offers an array of hotel rooms which enable us to accommodate a wide variety of guest requirements and budgets.

We sincerely apologise for the difficulties you experienced in finding us. Our location is clearly marked within resources like Google Maps, however we acknowledge some GPS systems are not up to date with our exact location. We try to assist guests as much as we can in anticipation of this issue and provide all guests with comprehensive and easy to follow directions via email just prior to the check in date. With your comments in mind we are adapting our email communications to increase the prominence of the these directions.

We understand you found our signage insufficient and we sincerely apologise for this. There is signage at the entrance to Mayday Hills village which indicates the direction of our hotels. Based on your comments (that the only prominent signage was for the ghost tours) we understand you must have driven past our hotel signage at the front gates of Mayday Hills village, which would have created much confusion. We are currently in the process of organising new signage with increased visibility which should prevent re-occurrences of the confusion you experienced. Please accept our sincere apologies for this experience. We sincerely appreciate you bringing this to our attention and for helping us to improve.

Your review mentioned a broken down piece of machinery in front of the Nurses Quarters. We hope you will allow us to offer some clarification; the cherry picker outside the Linaker Hotel was fully operational during your stay. This was utilised during a complete refresh of the historic Linaker Hotel’s exterior. We apologise and regret the machinery detracted from the hotel surrounds. Please rest assured this is an infrequent occurrence undertaken to ensure our beautiful heritage listed buildings are properly maintained. We thank you kindly for your understanding and apologise for the impact on your stay.

As previously mentioned, we are located among 40 hectors of beautiful, rare and exotic established trees. We regret that during your stay one of these trees had to be removed for safety issues. This event is an infrequent occurrence, however something we must contend with from time to time to ensure the safety of guests and visitors to our historic gardens. We regret this occurred during your stay and detracted from your experience and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Although Beechworth’s Day Spa, ‘The Spa,’ is conveniently co-located within the gardens Mayday Hills, we must clarify this is not part of our business. For the benefit of the public reading this review, we feel obligated to point out we have received excellent feedback from guests who have opted to enjoy the services of The Spa. Many of our guests have commented on the beauty of the building’s 18th century architecture and it’s tastefully renovated interior. However, we understand the building was not to your taste, and have forwarded your comments to The Spa for their consideration.

We truly do understand your overall sentiment regarding the potential and under-utilised area of the gardens and historic buildings of Mayday Hills in general. Our historic area has only begun to be re-purposed in recent years and is somewhat under developed at present. We take great pride in contributing to the exciting and unique development currently underway in this special part Beechworth, and hope you will agree Mayday Hills Village has a bright future. We sincerely hope to be able to welcome you back to Beechworth someday so that you are able to witness the improvements of Mayday Hills Village for yourself.

Thank you kindly for your comprehensive review. We are so grateful for you taking the time to help us improve and wish you safe travels and happy holidays.

From all of us at the George Kerferd and Linaker Nurses Quarters Hotels
