“modern, comfortable, great breakfast”
Reviewed 20 March 2013

This idyllic inn in a beautiful country setting typifies English countryside. The rooms are newly renovated to a modern standard with a great shower. The beds are comfortable and there is tea and coffee available in room with fresh milk down the hall. Pub/restaurant attached, but kitchen is closed for some hours during the afternoon. Helpful staff. Delicious continental breakfast included with French pastries and fresh fruit. Reasonable price includes wifi.

I have stayed at the Hawk at least once a week for the last year. I would recommend it as a good value night for the business traveller looking for a bit more than the Chain. The staff are friendly, helpful and attentive. The food is good. The rooms are very well appointed. My only criticism is that the water can be a bit slow to heat up and that it can be a bit noisy if you stay at the front of the pub.

Overall an excellent place to stay, but please don’t go there as I want to be able to stay and they have limited rooms.

Room Tip: Go for the back of the pub. It is quieter

Stayed here recently, and had a perfectly acceptable evening and breakfast. We all have our preferences, and its always tricky to strike the right balance in a country pub/hotel but I think that he 'Hawk' gets it about right. The rooms are small but well appointed - the plumbing is a tadge noisy but bearable. The food is simple but effectively done, and the inclusive continental breakfast was sufficient for most, although a croissant would have been a nice option (some ham even?) given the 'continental' expectations...toast and jams is hardly continental. The staff were helpful and attentive, although I missed the posse of public school girls behind the bar, shame. Free wifi was good and welcome. Would I go back? Probably, but £90 would get a room in a modern stopover hotel with a gym, large room, help yourself included cooked breakfast, air con etc etc but comparing apples and pears..?

We booked all the rooms here for my son's wedding for 2 nights. The staff were friendly kind and professional. It was a huge success and I would highly recommend the pub, the rooms, the food, the breakfast, the location - everything. It could not have been better for our family and guests - everybody wrote and said so, it made our weekend one of the best ever happiness, fun and comfort.

Room Tip: We booked all the rooms and they were all good!

This is a great pub to stop by for a meal. Its set in a picturesque village with some lovely common ground across the road with tables on it. In good weather it would be a lovely place for an afternoon in the sun. The bar serves good beer, decent wine list and the food looked great. I only had a mussels starter but the sauce was fantastic and the mussels big and juicy. The other things on the menu looked very good.
However, the hotel/b+b aspect needs to improve a few key things if it's to be worth the price tag. I was in room 5 and the price came to £90 without breakfast for b+b, a bit steep for a room above a pub. Also there was no shower in the bathroom save for a hand held job in the bath. The bath was enormous, sadly the water pressure is not. If you have patience you could wait an hour for it to fill up. Or do what I did and sit in an inch of water and splash about a lot.
Also there is no mirror above the sink but on the opposite wall, which means shaving requires regular deft pirouettes. Small matter but quite important.
My biggest bug bear however was the lack of working Internet, something that drives me mad when it is advertised. Sadly lost at least two hours much needed work.
Breakfast was also disappointing. Rather than a set price for breakfast, each item was priced individually. And for a b+b charging £90 a night for a room, to then charge £1.80 for a glass of concentrate grapefruit juice, £2 for a cup of tea (which they provide in the room for free), and so on for muesli, cooked brekkie etc., is just insulting.
I had bacon and eggs which were very disappointing and small, and came with an overly toasted/stale doorstep piece of toast - the sort that cuts the roof of your mouth when biting into it...
Finally, as much it is lovely to have a posy of attractive young blonde public school girls running the bar and waitressing, they tend to have too high an opinion of themselves and can occasionally lose sight of the basic tenets of customer service...
