We have just had 2 nights mid week at theses Villas, Max was very good in changing dates due to sickness ( using discount voucher ). Instruction how to find the property and where the key is located and security number excellent. Place must not have been used for a while as it was frezing in the apartment when we arrived but a/c warmed it very quickly, nice open fire and plenty of good fire wood and fire liters to bet it going. No need to go out for dinner if you were to bring some food as there is a full oven, fridge and micro ovene and all the usual appliances that you would need, TV a little smal but good reception and a dvd/radio combo was great for a bit of music. The bed was comfortable and a huge b/room and twin shower and plenty h/water, nice 2 person spa, all in all we enjoyed our stay, nice to come home of an afternoon and have all the kangaroos grazing on the lawns. Easy to get to town 5 min drive ( can walk ) and some nice cafes there as well, local s/market very poorly stocked ( not one can of pasta sauce )
We ate at the Veiws cafe/car //restaurant about 10 mins out of town, great food and lovely owners and most helpful

Having stayed at Marwood on 3 previous occasions with good results our fourth was less than acceptable. The new owners must be relying on the goodwill of previous parties because things have slipped badly. The accomodation needs a makeover and good cleaners.Dirty curtains carpets basic maintenance issues like cupboard door hinges not working properly leave this place a disappointment.Did I mention forgotten bread for breakfast....................

Enjoyed a lovely 2 night weekend at Marwood. Easy to follow instructions for where to find them and how to gain access done via email. Max very easy to communicate with. Everything was as stated in advertising.

Positives, and there were lots- very roomy villa, wonderful 2 person spa, plenty of hot water, double shower, open fire which was fantastic, breaky provisions, a big fridge, nice clean white linen- plenty of towels, lots of lights about the place which you don't often find in this kind of accommodation, comfy couch and wonderfully big and super comfortable king size bed. Lots of places to eat nearby, though it would be extremely difficult to walk home at this time of year. An abundance of wildlife all around and lots of outdoor activities on your doorstep. Villas situated a good distance apart.

Negatives, and there weren't many- the compressor for the reverse cycle air con, which we used as a heater, was located behind where the bed was. We didn't use it while we were sleeping but if you had wanted to the noise would have made sleeping impossible. Similarly in Summer, you would not have been able to sleep with an air con going. The only coffee available was from a jar of Nescafe- so much attention to detail in all other areas and we couldn't get a nice cup of coffee. The couch, which was obviously once white is now definitely not still white- was quite grubby and a bit off putting. The TV was fine to watch from the couch but it was reasonably small. It would have been great to be able to watch from the comfort of the beautiful bed, which we couldn't do.

As I said minor points but when you say you are "Luxury" accommodation you need to make sure these things are not an issue. Certainly has the price tag of luxury accom.

My husband and I just stayed for the second time in seven months...a week this time...and loved it! Time went too quickly. Great brekky supplied, fantastic service by staff, clean and user friendly villa (no.5), abundant wildlife, loads of firewood (replenished when needed..never had to ask!), heaps of linen and toiletries (also replenished without asking), easy checkin/checkout, wonderful grounds, peaceful and tranquil. Comfortable bed and pillows, huge spa overlooking private courtyard, the most spacious shower with large shower head and massage shower jet head and endless hot water. Good storage for a weeks worth of clothes. Great kitchen with family oven and fridge/freezer, and plenty of coffee, sugar, jams, detergents, utensils, etc. The villa utilises it's space well with a hidden laundry, two outside courtyards, large bathroom and high ceilings in an open plan arrangement. Surrounded by bush and walking tracks with no road noise. Extra blankets provided but the wood fire was more than adequate! Although we stayed for five days, we only ventured into "town" once...everything we needed or wanted we had in the villa. A great relaxing stay, well worth a five hour drive, and we will visit again! Great communication with owners and staff who are friendly and eager to please. Can't wait to go back and would recommend to everyone! Thanks for having us, see you again hopefully soon!

Halls Gap Victoria is a great place to visit and is part of the Grampians. These villas a first class, they are well equipped for couples both young and old. Good kitchen set up and has a spa bath and sitting area in front of an open fire (plenty of wood on hand). There are 8 separate villas spread out on the property and each backs onto the forest only 20 metres from the back window. There were kangaroos on the front lawn and in the back area. Kookaburras in the trees in the morning. This place is great for locals and international travelers as well as you see many of the things that Australia has to offer.

Ok, so this is a bit if a hard review to write.... Ref only Villa 6 "water villa"

Stayed at Marwood over the Easter break 2014. I think read all the way before making your decision....

First impressions...
Poor, we got in late on the Thurs before Easter (about 9pm)... Easy to pick up a key from the key box (we prefer that to a formal check in) would have been easier if there was an ounce of light. Both external lights non operational. (Than goodness for iPhones!)
Immediate entry to the place confronted by the smell of stagnant water... A bit like a fish tank... This villa has a 'stream' running through it (which wasn't running) which really is just a crude indoor water feature that I am positive was super trendy at one point. Anyhow after 6 hours driving we were straight in the huge, comfy and inviting bed.. Linens looked and smelled clean, yah! Always a positive! You could turn the stream on and off at will, I don't care who you are, that sound is not relaxing...

Second impression....
Waking early the next morning to the sounds of the kookaburras sitting outside the window was great, the grounds are clearly beautiful Australian bush land, very nice, just what we wanted, and hippity-hoppity kangaroos about the place too. So on first light we had a proper chance to look around. Bathrooms looked clean, and the huge double shower was lovely... This is where I get a little torn... The villas are in a real bush land setting backing on to scrub, so I do expect creepy crawlies and spider webs etc, which there were lots to choose from. The outside courtyard had a stinky green water feature too, but we didn't spend anytime out there, and thank god we don't BBQ, cause whilst there was a little BBQ on the patio I wasn't going to touch it.
Going to make breakfast, we brought our own, although a nice fresh loaf of bread, fresh milk, some cereal and jam was provided, it's a holiday! So bacon and eggs on the agenda! First pan I pulled out had not been cleaned properly by ..someone? But I forgave them, as the dish brush provided looked about 10 years old. Eventually some lovely breakfast with a glass of the very tasty complimentary bubbles!

That night we had to text the owner for fire wood, as there was no pile left on our veranda as stated. The next morning we had need to text again to report that the spa didn't work. On both occasions the owner contacted on site representatives and all matters were dealt with in a friendly and quick manner...

Further 'living' in the villa you just noticed the place needed a bloody good clean, nothing to go EEK at and run away... Just you know, cobwebs hanging, the corners with dust build up etc... As I continued to stay little things began annoying me, dust bunnies under the bed (when in search of a sock)... Mismatched Venetian blinds that didn't go all the way to the bottom of the sliding door.... I'm being picky now, but this place touts 5 stars and us called Marwood Luxury Villas... So I was expecting 5 stars... Mismatched plastic champagne flutes for safety, mismatched shower heads, cheap lounge suite, I think some kind of knob missing from the fire place damper (I burnt myself trying to adjust it)....

Third impressions... After getting over the annoying bits, we really enjoyed our stay in Halls a Gap and Marwood was a good locale to launch off from, we ended up all over the place, I think I got over things, as we didn't end up doing much except breakfast and sleeping at the villa.

Did note on our final day that there was a note in the visitor book saying to call if we had any problems with cleanliness (contact post stay would not be entertained) ... Fair enough... As I said not dirty enough to make me run away screaming, but not 5 star care as I was expecting.

I don't doubt that at one time (1999 I think the billboard says it one an award) that this place was all the rage, new, cared for, 5 star decor of the time, furnishings and decor that was time appropriate, but this villa desperately needs a make over and some love.

There are 5 other villas on site... I wonder if they are better?
To the Marwood team on site, thank for your assistance when requested, but we weren't going to request a full head to toe clean in the middle of our stay! It would have been inappropriate.

So summary is... Expect 3 stars and call it basic accommodation with a spa, and I think you are on the money. You won't be disappointed, have any other notions and you will be in for a let down...

PS the spa did actually work, you just had to go down the hall way into a laundry closet, unplug the washing machine and plug in the spa (no instructions anywhere) ....

Stay, but moderate expectations

Marwood is set up as a couples retreat, with king sized beds, a huge spa in the living area, plus double basins and showers in the large bathroom. Altogether the size of the unit is approximately that of a standard two-bedroom apartment, and high ceilings add to the sense of space. It's very nice.

We had booked four nights due to the distance from Melbourne. We were glad we'd made this decision, and pleased to receive a second lot of provisions for breakfast on day three. And a generous lot of goodies there were, too. In fact, we ate most of the bread (toasted) for light meals in the evenings after eating out for lunch.

Less generous was provision of wood for the fire. It turned cold on the second day we were at Marwood, so we lit the fire, burning the small lot of logs that evening. No more wood was left for us for two more days, so we had to make use of the air con heating. Not as atmospheric as a fire!

We loved watching the mob of kangaroos grazing on the 'lawns', with an occasional deer in the background. I bought some mince meat from a butcher in Stawell and fed the kookaburras, magpies and ducks. Waiting quietly for tiny wrens to hop close to us was a joy. It was so good to breathe the fresh air of the bush.

Our only criticism was the sense of confusion when we arrived. A van belonging to the property was parked in the driveway, but we could not raise anyone when we knocked on the door of 'Reception'. We waited quite a while, then approached some other guests who were walking back from the Halls Gap shops. They told us they'd been given an access code for the door of their unit. We had written verification of which unit we had been allocated, but no access code. Luckily a variation of the code given the other guests opened our key safe and we were able to get in! This was not a good start to our holiday, so I'm pleased to say generous amenities and breakfast provisions made up for this glitch!
