Owner description: Healesville Sanctuary, in the heart of the Yarra Valley, is world-renowned as the best place to see Australian wildlife in their natural habitat. Set in a beautiful natural environment, the Sanctuary offers a place for people and animals to reconnect with nature from creek to canopy, and plays a critical role in saving some of the world's most endangered animals. Explore the 70 acre bushland haven to experience close-up encounters with some of Australia's unique and endearing wildlife, including koalas, kangaroos, wombats, emus, dingoes, birds of prey and platypus. Visitors are also free to explore the Australian Wildlife Health Centre, a working vetinary hospital treating over 1500 orphaned, ill or injured wildlife every year. The expert team shares the journey of animal rescue, rehabilitation and release with the Sanctuary's visitors. Don't miss: Spirits of the Sky: A free flight presentation featuring Australian raptors such as the Wedge Tailed Eagle, and colourful parrot species. Tales from Platypus Creek: Come face-to-face with Healesville Sanctuary's most iconic species in a world-first interactive Platypus show. Observe Platypus as they interact with keepers, play in the water and even enjoy having their tummies tickled! Wade with the Platypus: In this world-first, hands-on experience it will be your turn to be the Platypus keeper. You will have the opportunity to step into the shallow water of the 'Platypus play pool' where it's normally the keeper's job to play, frolic, tickle and feed our little furry friends.

Spirits in the Sky was excellent. We had seen on the file 'Healing' and were not disappointed by the real show.
But don't just go for the birds - this is a great way to get to know Aussie wildlife - take overseas visitors here. Pies are great too :-)

“For tourists... One of my first choices”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

I took a group of international visitors here and, in fact, this is one of my first choices in outings for international visitors. My guests had a great time and were overjoyed to leave Australia feeling like they had some up-close and personal contact with Australian wildlife. On a nice day, the drive out to Healesville is quite pleasant. I wouldn't recommend attempting the trip on public transport - although it's certainly possible. The grounds of the sanctuary are extremely well kept and signposted and the atmosphere serene and laid-back. It is an easy stroll around the park and friendly staff along the way to answer questions or provide extra information on the wildlife. There is a great selection of wildlife, including: Kangaroos, wallabys, koalas, nocturnal animals, reptiles, fish and birds. Remember that the animals are likely to be more active earlier in the day or in the later afternoon. Also, I suggest you leave some time to explore Healesville a great semi-country town and also the nearby Badgers Weir is a great place to walk or picnic. Allow at least 2-3 hours to explore the sanctuary. The gift shop also has some quality "Australiana" type souvenirs.

“A great day with the wildlife”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2014

We travelled by train and bus from Melbourne to visit Healesville Sanctuary which was quite a pleasant Experience in its self,
We spent our time seeing animals we had only ever seen on the T.V. it was a education and a credit to the team that run it. We would like to have spent more time there but bus and train wait for no man and maybe we will get a chance to return next time we are in the country.

“Best place to see Australian creatures up close”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2014

Healesville Sanctuary is such a great place to visit, it is a shame it is so far outside Melbourne. With public transport I imagine it would be difficult to get here, so I visited as part of a day trip which included the Puffing Billy train. The staff who show you around are very knowledgeable and keen that you get as much out of your experience as possible. The park is zoned off into many different areas, lots where you can come very close to Australian wildlife. There are so many areas you could easily miss some. There's a wonderful aviary which if you look carefully you may be able to spot lyrebirds walking about. The Dingo exhibit for me was a highlight, it shows that these creatures aren't as dangerous as they are made out to be. It was interesting to learn about the different breeds of Kangaroo. It was fascinating to watch the platypus swimming around underwater. There are info panels which talk about the animals from an aboriginal perspective. You need to grab a map as you arrive and give yourself at least 3 hours.
