Owner description: Healesville Sanctuary, in the heart of the Yarra Valley, is world-renowned as the best place to see Australian wildlife in their natural habitat. Set in a beautiful natural environment, the Sanctuary offers a place for people and animals to reconnect with nature from creek to canopy, and plays a critical role in saving some of the world's most endangered animals. Explore the 70 acre bushland haven to experience close-up encounters with some of Australia's unique and endearing wildlife, including koalas, kangaroos, wombats, emus, dingoes, birds of prey and platypus. Visitors are also free to explore the Australian Wildlife Health Centre, a working vetinary hospital treating over 1500 orphaned, ill or injured wildlife every year. The expert team shares the journey of animal rescue, rehabilitation and release with the Sanctuary's visitors. Don't miss: Spirits of the Sky: A free flight presentation featuring Australian raptors such as the Wedge Tailed Eagle, and colourful parrot species. Tales from Platypus Creek: Come face-to-face with Healesville Sanctuary's most iconic species in a world-first interactive Platypus show. Observe Platypus as they interact with keepers, play in the water and even enjoy having their tummies tickled! Wade with the Platypus: In this world-first, hands-on experience it will be your turn to be the Platypus keeper. You will have the opportunity to step into the shallow water of the 'Platypus play pool' where it's normally the keeper's job to play, frolic, tickle and feed our little furry friends.

“Loved Healesville Sanctuary”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

We had a wonderful few hours at Healesville Santuary.
About one hours drive from Melbourne CBD into the country side and lots of fresh air.

Really loved seeing the koalas and kangaroos in their natural habitat, the koalas are incredibly cute. There is an opportunity for photos with them, the roos and snakes.
The platypus show was interesting and entertaining, certainly walk away learning a few facts about the platypus. The sky bird show is also worth watching. Loved the dingos too.

The zoo is very well kept, clean facilities, three cafés to choose from for food and drinks. Great place to take overseas guests as they specialise in Australian native animals.
Also impressed with their wildlife extinction program.
Open 9 to 5pm all year round and lots of parking.

“Amazing Animal Experience”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

Definitely the place to see and experience Australian wildlife. The Spirits of The Sky Bird Show is a great show worth seeing, with some interesting Australian birds. The feeding with the wallabies and kangaroos are great experiences as well. You can get pretty up close with the koalas. Another attraction worth seeing is the World of Platypus.

“Not sure whether I'll come again”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

Healesville Sanctuary is located pretty out of the way from the heart of Melbourne. Nevertheless, my friend and I traveled all the way there.
Tickets was around $30/pax for adult. Pretty steep for a small zoo.
I mainly came to Healesville Sanctuary just to see the platypus show after friends having been telling me how much they enjoyed it. My phone clock is set to Melbourne's time however, upon reaching the platypus show area before the actual 11.30am stated time, the gates were locked and we were not allowed it. Apparently the show had started and we are not allowed in. Was extremely disappointed as we were not told the gates would be locked and we were reached slightly before 11.30am...
There doesn't see to be much activities/shows held at the zoo... Perhaps it is because it is small? Only stayed at the zoo for a short while.
I don't know whether I'll come again.

“Gotta see the raptors”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

Spirits in the Sky was excellent. We had seen on the file 'Healing' and were not disappointed by the real show.
But don't just go for the birds - this is a great way to get to know Aussie wildlife - take overseas visitors here. Pies are great too :-)

“For tourists... One of my first choices”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

I took a group of international visitors here and, in fact, this is one of my first choices in outings for international visitors. My guests had a great time and were overjoyed to leave Australia feeling like they had some up-close and personal contact with Australian wildlife. On a nice day, the drive out to Healesville is quite pleasant. I wouldn't recommend attempting the trip on public transport - although it's certainly possible. The grounds of the sanctuary are extremely well kept and signposted and the atmosphere serene and laid-back. It is an easy stroll around the park and friendly staff along the way to answer questions or provide extra information on the wildlife. There is a great selection of wildlife, including: Kangaroos, wallabys, koalas, nocturnal animals, reptiles, fish and birds. Remember that the animals are likely to be more active earlier in the day or in the later afternoon. Also, I suggest you leave some time to explore Healesville a great semi-country town and also the nearby Badgers Weir is a great place to walk or picnic. Allow at least 2-3 hours to explore the sanctuary. The gift shop also has some quality "Australiana" type souvenirs.
