Healesville is a little pretentious or should I say stuck up? and a little shabby. Chardonnay is not on the main menu at the local pub and I was made to feel a little awkward at not realising it was passe. Not a big thing because the Healesville surroundings are stunning and historic.
The Sanctuary House Resort Motel was Good rather than "Average" and not quite "Very Good". It was well maintained and the staff very friendly. It felt comfortable.

My partner and I stayed one night cheaply in the cabin at the back and one night in one of the fancier suites with a spa. Both the rooms we stayed at were clean. The spa worked flawlessly. The service we had from the lady at the reception was excellent; we had originally decided to only stay one night, but when we decided to stay another she gave us a discount. Her husband ran the in-house restaurant, which delivered us amazing food. It was truly delicious and absolutely restaurant quality. My partner ordered steak and said it was the best he had ever had. I cannot recommend it enough.

The location of the motel is also excellent as it is close to Healesville Sanctuary, but as we had a car it was not a concern for us. If I were to nit-pick, I'd say that the rooms erred on the more expensive side, but were still priced reasonably.

I booked the self-contained unit for my whole family and was surprised to find our unit at the far secluded end of the resort. It was like being shut off from the rest of the world. In the beginning we had difficulty looking for our unit because there was no proper path leading to it. To drive our car over the undulating ground to our unit to unload our luggage was also a problem and the area was in complete darkness when we arrived back after dinner. Felt very quiet and unsafe at night and in the early morning when we wanted to check out; partly the place was on low season in winter. After reading some review about this far secluded unit, I had even requested for not wanting this unit and yet we were given this particular unit. Guess they have only one self-contained unit.

However the unit is very spacious with a separate master bedroom but the other 2 single beds are in the hall and kitchen area. Not so conducive with all the smell of cooking from the kitchen. Kitchen has limited cooking utensils even though they claimed to have full cooking facilities, quite dirty esp the oven.

The hot shower was quite difficult to control. However the lady at the reception was extremely helpful and friendly. Helped us to print out a google map to get to Philip Island from Healesville

Room Tip: Ask for room near the reception

Decent clean room, nice surroundings, friendly helpful staff. It's very convenient for the Animal Sanctuary, which we enjoyed, but a short walk into town. We think the very low scoring reviews are malicious in the extreme and the truth is it's a better than average motel.

Tania and I stayed here on Valentine's Day 2014. Sanctuary House Resort Motel is everything it claims to be. There is nothing pretentious about it. Surrounded by beautiful Australian bushland the accommodations are ample and comfortable. Having experienced our fair share of 5 start hotels and resorts around the world, we have found that genuine warmth and hospitality is something money can't buy. Sanctuary House has genuine warmth and hospitality in spades. There is a good restaurant and menu on the premises. The 550-gram steak was cooked to perfection - blue. Tania is vegetarian and her dinner was excellent. Deserts were to go because the mains were very filling. The main draw card for choosing to stay here in the first instance was the proximity to Healesville Sanctuary. It is 400 meters up the road. We recommend Sanctuary House Resort Motel. Tania & Shane

Room Tip: We stayed in a deluxe room. Compact, but ample.
