Staying with relatives I found this trail by accident on early morning walk. Nice smooth trail with interesting scenery. I used it a couple of times including ten km walk and found easy to walk on and did a good fast time even though return uphill.

My adult son and I decided to use a cold Sunday to try this well know rail trail and we were not disappointed. Armed with a couple of hard-tail mountain bikes we set off from Wandin headed toward Warburton, the return distance measuring a tick over 56Kms. The surface, even at this time of year, was fine with occasional puddles but nothing unsuitable for really any bike except perhaps a road bike, although a little bit of front suspension was handy over the bumpy wooden bridges. Its basically flat but Strava recoded over 600 meters of rise over the journey and we didn't do the steepest part from Lilydale. We stopped at the excellent COG café for a coffee and muffin at Warburton and took a little over 3 hrs for the return trip. The views and surrounds were great and there are plenty of parking spots along the trail so you can lengthen or shorten the trip to your own taste. I will be doing it again soon.

Taking the Warburton Rail Trail walk from Mt Evelyn to Wandin Station and return (roughly 10kms round trip), I could not help but be impressed with the amount of engineering required in construction of the rail line to keep the little trains on a relatively flat gradient. Although the walk is largely downhill on the walk to Wandin, the roadway which follows the same path contains numerous 'serious' hills that would be difficult to walk. Along the way, the scenery is not spectacular in this section, but is is pleasant enough with rock cuttings, fern gullies and gum trees. You could make the walk in either direction, although the parking at the Wandin end is limited and there is no toilet at the old station platform. Wandin village shops are 350 meters further on, but public toilets are available here. The Mt Evelyn end of the section ends on the village itself, with several cafes and a public toilet. Parking is also easier at Mt Evelyn. This section could be done by walkers who have difficulty with uneven ground. Walkers should also be very careful crossing the Warburton Highway at the Wandin end as the traffic approaches at speed and there is no regulated crossing.

This trail has been an integral part of my family's recreation. As kids we'd have family bike rides along various sections and now as adults we join our extended family (cousins, uncles, etc) and friends to ride the whole thing a couple of times a year.

Riding the whole length is a great way to spend active time with friends and family - it's beautiful and while most of the track is fairly flat, there are challenging sections at the lilydale end.

So get a group together and enjoy one of Victoria's greatest recreational rides. If you haven't been to warburton, you'll love it when you get there!

Very scenic countryside route. We cycled from Warburton to Lilydale, one way (38km).
Generally easy cycling, except the last 10km, which is a long slope approaching Mt Evelyn.
For family, it'll be easier if you can start your ride in middle of the trail, as elevation is a mild "V" shape.

We took around 4 hrs to complete, including lunch and crashes. :-P
