“Candlelight Cottage”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 May 2014

My 3-year-old and I enjoyed 3 nights at Candlelight Cottage around Anzac Day. The cottage is historic, beautifully lit and decorated, warm and private. The surrounding gardens are spectacular. Rosellas bathed in the pond in the backyard. The open fire and ducted heating kept the house warm, breakfast provisions were generous, and the bathroom/spa has a particularly lovely outlook. Dappled sunlight streams through the enormous trees into the kitchen and dining area for part of the day, but the various lamps and dimmer lights create relaxing cosiness at other times. The cottage is walking distance to a great fruit, vegetable and food store, Pellegrinis, which also stocks delicious local free-range bacon and ham. Peta was an excellent, welcoming hostess and a real pleasure to deal with. I recommend Candlelight Cottage for both romantic and family trips. It's a very special place, a real mountain hideaway.

Thank you CJ, I am so pleased you picked up on all the special things - sunlight through trees, warm fire, rosellas flittering through the gardens - we love it too.

Next time you might also like to visit the Organic Fanatic in Mt Dandenong who have fabulous fruit and veges, but also beautiful flowers and wonderful organic products. That tops up what we always buy from our wonderful Pellegrinos who have made our lives so much simpler by being there!

We look forward to having you stay again and bring George for longer, he was so sweet.

Warm best wishes, Peta

We booked to stay at The Cottage in the Forest for 3 nights after our wedding and couldn't have asked for anything better. Peta was accommodating right from the point of booking up until the day, with prompt responses to emails, suggestions of restaurants for a romantic dinner and an offer of some snacks and chilled champagne on our first night.

When we arrived at 11pm after our wedding, the lights and heater were on (a shame the fire wasn't lit but OH&S prevented that!) and there was music (smooth fm) playing on the stereo in the bedroom. It was the absolute perfect way to end our perfect day.

Room Tip: The Cottage in the Forest is a perfect place for a romantic getaway.

We recently stayed at the Blackwood Cottage and could not have asked for a more beautiful experience. The cottage is furnished to perfection creating a romantic and intimate feel that allows you to relax as soon as you enter.
Everything is provided to ensure you have all you need for a great stay. Coffee machine, lovely breakfast, iPad controlled sound system, TV and Foxtel.
The cottage is located only a few minutes walk from Sassafras with its interesting little shops.
We will certainly be back!

I stayed at the candlelight cottage a few weeks ago with 3 friends for a relaxing getaway weekend. We absolutely loved it. The garden was beautiful, tranquil and hid a perfect welcoming, well appointed cottage. We felt a long way from the rush of everyday life in the cottage and apart from a visit to the many and varied shops in Olinda and Sassafras spent our time relaxing in the cottage. The breakfast hamper, eggs, juice, fruit, milk, bread, selection of teas and coffee and complementary champagne were just the beginning of the extras that make the cottage so special. We lit the candles and listened to the rain fall on the tin roof. The beds were comfortable, the toiletries supplied in the bathroom were beautiful and the overall decor very pretty. I would definitely visit again.

One of our favourite sounds is the rain on the roof - so we are pleased you found it tranquil too. A group of friends have the very best and most special breaks away in our lovely historic cottage, something about fires, curling up chatting with fresh tea, or delicious wines. We so look forward to your next visit, thank you for this review,

Warm wishes, Peta

Staying at the Blackwood Cottage in Sassafras in late March 2014 was the perfect end to our magical wedding day - I felt thoroughly spoilt staying in this place, Peta had arranged a beautiful antipasto platter for us upon our arrival not to mention the rose petals in a heart shape on the bed - I loved the interesting items everywhere you looked, it just made me want to explore more - the shower was the best ever, the bed very comfortable with beautiful quality linen, the coffee machine was so good we ended up buying one on our way home, breakfast was delivered on time and was hot, we couldn't fault this little gem of a place and its in an excellent position, it suited us and we enjoyed every minute of our stay, might even try and come back each anniversary we loved it that much

I stayed at Clare Cottage with my friends in 2011 and well, I was back for a second stay in December 2013 with my family! Just couldn't get enough! =)

The property is located at a secluded spot in Olinda, it provided the homely and relaxation feel that my family and I required for the city getaway. It is sited in between 2 quaint townshops with convenience store that is just a 5-minute drive away. The bedding was comfortable and clean. The cosy fireplace accentuated the family togetherness as we gather close for TV/Movies.

Thanks Peta!

Room Tip: Clare Cottage for the "foresty" retreat!

Sadly we are no longer operating the lovely Clare Cottage. The owners wanted it back for themselves.

However, when you next come to stay, perhaps our Cottage in the Forest, Candlelight Cottage, Twilight Cottage, Blackwood Sassafras, Sherbrooke Manor and Beechmont Garden Retreat will be tempting. Just a secret note for you, we have two lovely cottages in Belgrave, Yanakie and The Blacksmiths, coming into our care soon - historic and in beautiful wild garden settings.

We look forward to welcoming you back before too long - the fires are cosy over winter!

Warm wishes, Peta

We stayed in the Blackwood at Candlelight Cottages (this cottage is located in Sassafrass, Victoria). The cottage is immaculate, spotless, romantic, very private and hidden away. Yet, amazingly, it is only a two minute walk from the quaint shops in the main street.

The layout is amazing. A living and dining area, bedroom and shower / spa / toilet room.

They could be isolated from each other or opened up so the audiovisual system was accessible/viewable from any of them.

The shower is the best I have ever experienced. It would seem that the available water pressure could easily be used for firefighting. The water temperature was hot and instant and the taps only rotate 90 degrees from off to full on. Made it so easy to adjust the flow and temperature.

Building access is a problem. The steps up into the cottage are difficult to climb because of the rise height of the steps and lack of a hand-rail for most of the steps.

Once in the driveway, backing out onto the gravel roadway (track) with a 2 - 3 metre drop, with no barriers, on the other side of the roadway, is a serious concern.

The kitchen is pokey with totally insufficient benchspace, no hotpate and the only option for any hot meals is to order it in at a cost, go to the local cafes, or use the microwave.

Teabags and low fat milk should be available as an option to the loose leaf tea and full cream milk.

The fire alarm sounded each time we used the toaster because of its proximity and lack of exhaust fan.

While the audiovisual system, utilizing an iPad was amazing, people without experience with these devices, could well become frustrated. I twice had to reinstall the app on the iPad because it locked up and wouldn't reset.

The bed had a very soft topper and personally, because I suffer from a sore back, it was uncomfortable. I am sure that other would find it divine.

Keeping in mind that this cottage is a relatively new addition, I am sure the cottage is still in the process of smoothing out some of the bugs.

The booking process over the internet worked smoothly and Peta's manner was lovely. Our request for extra time to vacate was happily granted at no extra cost.

For us, we would probably not come back to this particular cottage, but will certainly book ourselves back into some of the other Candlelight Cottages that we have stayed in before.

Hello Ed and Jenny, Thank you for taking time to send through your overview of The Blackwood. You did comment on the steps when checking out and these were already being reviewed with a view to adding in steps to lessen the height and put in a handrail, so addressing your very valid concerns.

I would just like to explain the kitchen a little bit. We are not allowed to supply a kitchen at all, so this is simply a kitchenette for making tea/coffee and toasting the lovely hand made crumpets etc for breakfast. We recognise it is small, but it is the best we can offer given the Shire restrictions.

Your point about options for tea bags was addressed when setting up the property and it was decided that fresh loose tea from the famous Tea Leaves in Sassafras was the most unique offering. Today, by the way, we have set up the pre-stay letters which have been months in the coming. This letter will come out 4 days prior to your next stay and invites guests to let us know of any special requirements (lo fat milk, gluten free breads, soy milk). We often have special requests and are delighted to provide what guests want if we know prior to the stay.

Yes, the bed does get a 'divine' tick from most guests - this is one of those tricky things with everyone having individual tastes. We had hoped the top of the range kingsize King Koil mattress and base will be luscious for most people.

Thank you for letting me know about the fire extinguisher - the owner is an electrician, so we will investigate this - or work out where to suggest guests make the toast.

I hope, knowing you are very experienced with computers that you enjoyed working with the ipad. We do have a hand held remote so the tv, music, apple tv, foxtel and internet can be worked from either. This is in the drawer under the ipad and I usually (!) remember to tell guests as they check in.

We so very much look forward to your next stay with us and I hope that is soon,

Best wishes and thank you for your feedback, Peta
