“A magical hideaway”
Reviewed 9 August 2013

My daughter and I stayed one night in the garden suite, which was absolutely delightful. The garden the suite overlooks is magnificent & a beautiful spot to explore!!
We thoroughly enjoyed all the quality breakfast provisions & biscuits which were left.
The fire was set up and ready to light & the ample timber for the fire which was supplied kept the whole suite warm, and we didn't need to use the ducted heating.

My daughter described this place as 'magical' and she is quite right.

We go away for a girls weekend every year, my mum, me and 2 sisters. Woolrich is the best by far, the homely atmosphere made us feel instantly relaxed. You have thought of everything from the generous breakfast provisions to the wine, comfy beds, spa, lovely comfy couches to sit in by the open fire, just wonderful. We stayed 2 nights but wanted to stay longer so much so that we have booked again for next year. It is a beautiful spot, enhanced by wonderful accomodation, highly recommend.

We stayed for 2 nights n the Garden Suite and could not have been happier. From the open fire to the spa bath to the king size bed to the full breakfast supplies, everything was fantastic. It's central to great views, Cafes, cinemas, and all in all was a most relaxing experience.

We drove down from Sydney to take our Melbourne friends away for a special treat. We couldn't have chosen a more perfect place. Woolrich Retreat was gorgeous. Nothing was spared to make our stay enjoyable.. The fridge was filled with delicious goodies for breakfast as well as a bottle of wine for later in front of the fire.
There were dressing gowns and slippers in the bedrooms and that wonderful spa. Superb.
Then the view when you stepped outside onto the deck - in one word spectacular. We just loved the beautiful gardens and found several lyrebirds at home there.
We would certainly recommend Woolrich Retreat to anyone who wants to wind down and enjoy the serenity and peacefulness in a beautiful part of Australia.

Flew in from Perth to spend some value time with my daughter who lives in Melbourne. When I first entered the cottage it was so homely that I thought I had the wrong address and had walked into someone else's house! The doubt was reinforced when I opened the fridge door to be greeted by a wealth of beautiful goodies for our breakfasts. Every thing was perfect, the fire was set to go, the Spa was bubbling, waiting. Every single thing had been thought of, even warm vests and dressing gowns with slippers. We relaxed straight away and this was medicine for my daughter who had just had recent surgery.
The Gardens were full of colour being autumn and the view from the decking went forever with not one house in sight.
If you want a break out of the big smoke this is it folks, terrific value for money, I will return.

We booked our accommodation at Woolrich Retreat at short notice & were absolutely blown away when we arrived. It's a lovely cottage decorated in an art deco style with a log fire & a well stocked kitchen. In fact, the food provided was so delicious & generous that we barely needed to buy a thing over our 3 night stay.

We were with our 2 little children & Mary kindly lent us a portacot, high chair, box of lego & other bits & bobs to keep them happy & make life easier for us.

But what I really had not realised was that the cottage is set in the most stunning gardens & next door to another amazing garden, Cloudehill, that you are free to wander in. Our energetic little toddler was kept busy roaming around on his twice daily walks & I loved every minute of it too.

Woolrich Retreat really is a retreat from the world - a huge spa bath is included, as is CDs, DVDs & lots of books & magazines. The big deck has stunning views & the whole setting is absolutely magical. We can't believe what a special place we've discovered, & how easy it was to get there from Melbourne.

Woolrich Retreat is situated near the township of Olinda on Mt Dandenong in the Dandenong Ranges. Although the location is rural or semi-rural, getting there is easy; it is only 48 km and less than an hour's drive from Melbourne. There is much to see and do in Olinda and its surrounds; the area is endowed with both great natural beauty and lovely created gardens. Visitors will find restaurants and cafes and many unusual shops to explore.
Wherever you live in Australia or beyond, Woolrich Retreat is a place you must visit! Nothing prepared us for the stunning gardens and views of this beautiful home. Within the immediate vicinity of the house there are walks through formal gardens and wild woodland escapes. In the latter, a lyrebird performed its extensive repertoire of birdsong including sweet whistling and kookaburra mimicry.
The whole property was designed originally by a person with a keen eye for beauty and balance. The view from the dining area, kitchen and deck reveals a far off mountain range, ever-changing as the clouds, mists and sunlight affect the hues. This distant view is framed on either side by a dense, mature garden, originally planned to create this effect. The result is breath-taking.
The home is tastefully furnished in the art deco style; it is modern but in keeping with the age of the house and guests are trusted to enjoy unusual objet d’art throughout. We loved the separate large ensuite bathrooms for each bedroom. The kitchen is excellent and well equipped with quality appliances, cookware and utensils. The pantry cupboard is well-stocked too. Local shops provide all other requirements from the mundane to regional gourmet items but you will find plenty of both in the fridge already.
There are extra touches everywhere, reflecting far more than a good business approach; our hosts, Mary and Ches Mason, were warm, kind and generous but at the same time, most un-intrusive. We will certainly return to Woolrich Retreat with some friends; it is the kind of place you want to share with people you love.
