Attraction details
Owner description: A spring spectacular! The National Rhododendron Gardens are host to brilliantly coloured blooms of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, cherries and daffodils. Seasonal changes ensure the gardens are a delight all year around. When not in bloom, you can still soak in the beauty of rich bark textures, seed capsules, foliage shapes and beautiful fragrance as you stroll through the grounds. While many visitors take their time and enjoy all of the constantly changing vistas of the gardens, others prefer to take shorter walks into specific areas. Walking the entire garden is a round trip of approximately 5km, and includes some steeper grades. Magnificent views overlook Silvan Reservoir, the Yarra Valey, Warburton Ranges and Mt Baw Baw. The National Rhododendron Gardens are open 10.00am to 5.00pm daily (last entry 4.30pm) except Christmas Day. Entrance to the gardens is free. The park is located 500 metres from the Olinda township along the Olinda - Monbulk Road. Turn into The Georgian Road, the entrance is 50 metres on the right. During the busy spring period, parking on weekends is limited. There is additional parking available at both the Olinda Recreation Reserve on the corner of The Georgian Road and Olinda-Monbulk Road, and the former Olinda Golf Course site on the Olinda-Monbulk Road. Both these sites are within a two minute walk of the main entrance.

“NATURES COLOUR PALLATTE”
Reviewed 27 January 2014

This is one of the best gardens in the area-and possibly one of the best we have seen throughout Australia. A photographers dream. Endless supply of many types of flowers and wonderful walks and ideal for weddings and other similar events. The girls dresses will be outclassed and put to shame by the bushes though. Do not leave your camera. Take some water and hats for the family and stop for a picnic. You will be refreshde and rejuvinated.

“A hidden gem”
Reviewed 20 January 2014

In spite of having a daughter living in Melbourne and making many visits to the city I had never heard of this garden until recently. Luckily we were able to make our first trip in October just when the rhododendrons were at their best. It is one of the most beautiful, peaceful places I have ever encountered and look forward to many more visits in the future. As many people have pointed out it is FREE which is a bonus. It would be a brilliant place to have a picnic at most times of the year with plenty of shade and lawned areas. I look forward to taking my grandchildren there to explore the paths and bridges and hidden little statues etc. I have always considered Stourhead in England as the best garden in the world but this more accessible beauty spot is certainly worth the visit. The fact that it is so low-key without catering facilities etc only adds to the charm from my point of view. Well worth a visit - whether it be just for a few hours or for a full day out.

“A magnificent Victorian treasure”
Reviewed 3 January 2014

Victoria's famous National Rhododendron Garden is located only a few hundred metres east of the attractive mountain village of Olinda in Melbourne's picturesque Dandenong Ranges. At Olinda, turn east onto the Olinda-Monbulk Road and then left into Falls Road. Although most brilliant between September and November when the rhododendrons and azaleas are in bloom, the gardens have been superbly landscaped and designed with plantings to delight the eyes of the visitor all year round. The rhododendron gardens are massive in size and designed to appear as natural as possible. A winding bitumen road enables a small visitor bus to traverse the gardens without detracting from the natural beauty. From the entrance the land falls down past two very pretty lakes. The downhill walk is easy but the return uphill walk may be tiring for some older visitors. An incredible aspect of this magnificent natural garden is that Parks Victoria charges no entry fee. I have felt compelled to compare the National Rhododendron garden with the possibly more famous Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island, Canada. The Butchart Gardens are magnificent but appear more contrived than natural.

“Post Wedding Picnic”
Reviewed 30 December 2013

Sadly the rhododendron's were passed their best but a few trees were still blooming. The shop was surprisingly good value for money and the lady serving was exceptionally polite and charming.
