“Romantic short break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 December 2013

Michael & Alison

My husband and I were given a voucher to stay at Mary Card's Coach House, well can I say what an enchanting place, the room was lovely, very romantic for couples and tastefully decorated. Plenty of breakfast provisions to tantalise your taste buds. The garden view from our balcony was breathtaking as the morning sun peered through the French doors waking us from a restful night. Very close to everything, shopping, dinner, and a gorgeous drive through the mount. We highly recommend this B&B to anyone wanting a lovely short break.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Baltic Suite

LOCATION: MARY CARDS Coach House is located at 1498 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. Olinda village is an easy 10-15 minutes' stroll away from the B&B while getting to Sassafras village would take about 45 minutes on foot. The following attractions are either within walking distance or easily accessible by bus: CloudeHill Gardens; National Rhododendron Gardens; SkyHigh; and William Ricketts Sanctuary.

There are regular bus services that connect the villages of Mt. Dandenong so that is a convenient option for those who don't drive. If you intend to travel around via public transport, remember to buy a MyKi Card from the train station before heading to Mt. Dandenong; you will need a valid fare-card (MyKi) for buses plying the Dandenong routes as bus drivers here do not accept cash payment.

DIRECTIONS: From Melbourne Tullamarine Airport, we travelled to MARY CARDS Coach House via SkyLimo. We had a smooth and safe ride in a clean and spacious cab. Our assigned driver was courteous and patient; he waited over an hour for us at the airport without a word of complaint! It was pricey (AUD 175 for a 90-minute journey) but we were impressed by their professional service.

Alternatively, you could hop onto SkyBus, an express service that runs 24/7 with buses departing for the city centre every 10 minutes (AUD 17 for 1-way Adult fare). From Southern Cross station, transfer onto the Belgrave line and travel to the terminus; from Belgrave station, board bus service 694 and alight at the bus-stop near the junction of Ridge Road and Mt. Dandenong Tourist Road. The entire Bus-Train-Bus journey would take about 2 hours.

BALTIC SUITE: Our spacious and comfortable suite on the upper floor had a French Country-style decor which was cosy and inviting. The French windows open out to a private balcony overlooking the picturesque garden. The balcony has a small round table & 2 chairs where you can enjoy a good read and a drink amidst the tranquil, scenic surroundings (provided the weather is fine).

The suite was furnished with a Queen-sized bed with a pair of bedside lamps; huge chest of drawers; 2 upholstered armchairs next to a glass-top coffee table; cabinet housing a flatscreen TV & a DVD player; wooden wardrobe with bathrobes, bedroom slippers, iron & ironing board; wooden dining table & 2 chairs; breakfast counter with 2 high stools; and a gas heater.

BED: comfortable with clean sheets, warm blanket and fluffy pillows.

BATHROOM: clean, spacious and well-lit. Furnished with the usual: small vanity counter with adequate storage space; mirrors above wash basin; hairdryer; spa bath; and toilet. Lots of clean towels, tissue paper and extra toilet rolls were provided. There was also a comprehensive range of amenities: hand soaps; shower gel; body lotion; shampoo; conditioner; etc.

Only issues were the weak water pressure and the difficulty in adjusting the water to a comfortable temperature.

KITCHEN: compact yet well-equipped with mini fridge; sink; microwave oven; small stove; toaster; juicer; coffee-& tea-making facilities. The cabinets are well-stocked with pots & pans; crockery; cutlery; and all necessary kitchen utensils ~ everything was clean and orderly.

F&B: room rate was inclusive of self-catering breakfast. The generous provisions included: big loaf of sliced bread with butter, margarine, Vegemite, assorted jams & honey; Kellogg's cereals; tins of baked beans; basket of eggs; mushrooms; yoghurt; full-cream milk; orange juice; and bottled water.

The F&B outlets nearest to MARY CARDS Coach House are Kelly's Bar, Olinda Pizza, Pig & Whistle Tavern, and Wild Oak Restaurant. We ordered take-away dinner from Olinda Pizza everyday of our stay; the pizza was delicious and affordably priced.

When in Olinda village, be sure to visit Pie In The Sky for its award-winning gourmet pies and exquisite desserts. You can also enjoy a hearty meal and warm service at Olinda Café.

SERVICE: Reservation, Check-In and Check-Out all proceeded smoothly. Prior to our arrival, Paula provided us with detailed information on how to reach the B&B via public transportation from the airport. After Check-In, she brought us up to the suite and patiently explained how to operate the various appliances, especially the stove and gas heater.

Paula was mindful of our dietary restrictions when preparing the breakfast provisions and also kindly lent us a brolly when we had inclement weather for several days. Overall, we found Paula to be a gracious host and her attentive service was much appreciated.

IN SHORT: There are many quality B&B up on Mt. Dandenong, MARY CARDS Coach House is a good choice for those who wish to be in or near Olinda village. You can expect a quiet, pleasant stay in this historic bluestone coach-house, at reasonable rates which are slightly lower than other properties in the vicinity. Book directly on MARY CARDS' website to enjoy special rates.

Room Tip: Mary's Suite is the smallest of the 3 & its balcony is situated outside the room, right next...

My boyfriend and I arrived at Mary Card's Coach House earlier than expected but Rick was very welcoming. He took in our bags and gave us a run down of things to see and do in the area and where we could wander/explore before coming back to check in.

I would highly recommend Mary Cards Coach House. If you are looking for somewhere quaint to stay away from the hustle and bustle then this is it. Travelling around is easy, just hop on and off the buses. And the train station is not too far either. From here we managed to visit Healesville Sanctuary (would recommend) and went on a Yarra Valley wine tasting tour which was brilliant!

Mary & Rick were both very accommodating and Mary went out of her way to help research and book us onto a wine tasting tour at the last minute.

We had a fantastic few days and when the time came for us to leave, I don't think either of us wanted to.
I would certainly stay here again!

My wife & I spent two lovely nights here. The location is good - just a short walk to the pub, and the suite was very comfortable. We were made very welcome and given plemty of information on how things worked as well as advice for meals and things to do in the area. The fridge was well stocked with everything you could think of for breakfast (including hollandaise sauce if you were up to eggs benedict!) A nice touch was that they did all the washing up for you. We can thoroughly recommend this place.

My partner organized our week end retreat and he chose really well. We were greeted with a genuine and warm reception. The hostess, Paula, showed us to our room, 'The Baltic' room and ensured we had all we needed.
The fridge is stocked with wonderfully fresh food, tomatoes and spinach, eggs and bacon and Nudie orange juice. Fresh milk, lovely cereals, the list goes on. Ps.. I have to mention the delicious home made chocolates! No expense is spared.
The linen, towels etc were fresh and clean .... as was the entire room.
And yes we sunk into the deep spa bath, so relaxing and decadent !
You're situated within easy walking distance to all facilities, restaurants, country pubs and wine bars. Spoilt for choice.
And a special thanks to our hosts who went above and beyond when we needed extra help in retrieving our cars keys. So relaxed were we the keys were mistakenly left where we had dinned the night before!!
A terrific time, thanks Paula and Rick

We stayed in Mary's suite for 4 nights. It is the smallest of the 3 available but we thought it was just fine. The breakfast provisions were top quality- enough to keep us going the whole day. The room was immaculate- spotlessly clean- and was serviced every day. Free wi-if too! I would stay again. Paula is friendly and helped us find a laundromat.

Not many reviews, so I was slightly apprehensive after booking. However, I needn't have worried, the room was lovely & the ornately carved 4 poster bed was gorgeous. You have to make your own breakfast, but everything you could possibly need is supplied - & no washing up! We had a very good meal in the restaurant across the road. The only downside was being bitten by mozzies on the walk back. So, yes, I would recommend this place & would gladly stay there again.
