“Classic charm with good service”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

We visited Queenscliffe for a day a number of years ago and decided to stay here before 5 days along the Great Ocean Rd. The historical nature of the accommodation took our fancy and noting the reviews about it looking tired and having a noisy bar, I called to enquire about a room. The lady on the phone was very helpful and found a ground floor room away from the bar so booked it. We arrived in the evening after the reception closed and check-in was very hospitably handled by a gentleman in the front bar. We decided to have a drink in the bar prior to dinner in one of a couple of restaurants we have researched (Queenscliffe seems to have a number of very good restaurants, one of which we have dined at previously). The waitress was very helpful and in helping select beer and wine from their very good looking list. After a relaxing drink we decided to stay and have some tapas style dishes for dinner. That was a good choice. BTW, the bar’s last orders are by 8pm so we don’t know how it can be noisy latter in the night!!
Our room certainly meet our expectations for the hotel. There appears to have been a renovation in the 1980s which is standing the test of time. Some paint work could be attended to over the next year but that is always the case for an accommodation of this age (I am sympathetic as we used to have an old colonial home in Brisbane which was constant maintenance).
The breakfast had a suitable range of offerings, less than the big expensive hotels, but more than the average B&B. The quality was acceptable.
Overall the accommodation reflects its era and the staff presented a hospitality that every accommodation would be proud of.

We appreciate your comments and happy to hear that we met your expectations. Thanks for taking the time to call and enquire with us regarding your booking. We are always happy to chat with customers about what we can do to arrange the most suitable details for them. There is a lot of upkeep on an historical building like ours, but we do work constantly to keep improving areas where we can.
We are glad to hear you enjoyed our Vue Street Bar and hope to see you again perhaps in the summer months when our roof top bar opens up. We hope the rest of your trip down the Great Ocean Road was a great success. Regards

Celebrated a Mate's wedding here on August 23, 2014, and stayed the night - extremely polite and courteous staff - food and beverages (beer that I had never heard of previously - I recommend the "Requiem" ale) were fantastic. The room was small - but neat and tidy - I suggest when you book you ask for a balcony view. We got there at 1.45 p.m. for a 3.30 p.m. wedding - room was finally ready at 2.55 p.m., staff (Lucy) were very apologetic and gave my son and I a complimentary drink as a result of the wait! For those of you who don't like to drive you can get the ferry from Sorrento - a 40 minute trip and you are in the heart of Queenscliff. I will DEFINITELY be staying there again!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony view.

I stayed at the Vue Grand last weekend, having booked at least four months ago. I was looking forward to this 2 night stay as I had recollections of an exclusive hotel with pristine rooms and a luxury indoor pool set up. Although the bed and breakfast stay was purchased from an Internet sales site it was by no means inexpensive ,so I guess the price paid also added to my expectations of the establishment. We were originally given a first floor room looking onto shops next door which the receptionist said she wasn't over happy with and suggested we have a look at it as well as another room on the ground floor ,the window overlooking one of the bar lounges. We were reassured that the bar would not be in operation. We took the downstairs room because we were uninclined to climb the stairs all weekend. Despite this, there was loud music in the room ,its origins which I could not trace ,so I finally went to reception. It had been playing when the lounge was open earlier in the day and had not been turned off. It was turned off after this. The room was done out in old world colors and borders which I expected but I think it had been done many years ago as there was no fresh feel to it. The wooden furniture was well worn and chipped and would not have matched the quality of furniture in Vinnies. The bathroom was totally dated and the temperature of the shower fluctuated from warm to quite hot- maybe it was affected by other showers being used at the same time. Added to this we left the "Please make up my room " sign on the door when we went out for three hours and returned to find the bed had not been made. By this stage it seemed improbable the room service would happen ,so made it ourselves. Hardly the service expected for the reputation of the hotel and price paid for the stay. The breakfast finishing times were too early- 9.30 on Sunday morning and 9.00 on a Monday. The breakfast was buffet style and substantial. Some of the bain marie's were very difficult to open and some of the hot food was barely lukewarm. We also discovered that the hotel no longer had the pool . It had been sold off some time ago. The staff were friendly and the hotel is well located. I will not stay there again. There are many excellent accommodation establishments in the area that would have been half the price paid, would have had more amenities and provided greater ambience and restfulness.

Room Tip: Neither of the rooms offered were great, despite booking a long time ahead.

Dear Leigh,
We appreciate all feedback and will share this review with all relevant staff and departments. We are always happy to hear that our staff are friendly and they do endeavour to meet everyone’s needs.
We would like to address some of your other points.
1. As you mentioned, you did book your 2 night stay through a Groupon discount offer.
Part of this offer included a 12 noon checkout and complimentary bottle of wine. It was very clearly stated that a room service was not included and we reminded all guests of this upon check in. The Groupon offer also stated you would receive a Traditional room, so it didn’t matter how early you booked, you still received that style of room. We do offer upgrades to balcony, spa or modern suites if you were interested in paying the difference.
2. We are sorry that there was some background music playing earlier on but I believe that was turned off once addressed.
3. We have also discussed the bain maries and will address any problems there.
4. We do usually run breakfast until 10 am on Sat & Sun, just that Sunday we had to finish 30 minutes earlier due to a function we were setting up. We did make sure to advise everyone of this upon check in.
5. Regarding the pool, we do not advertise anywhere that we have the pool. That was gone at least 7 years ago. We have however in more recent years added a roof top bar (in warmer months) and our Vue Street Bar on the terrace. These newer additions are quite popular with our visitors.
We hope this response helps clear up any misunderstandings but we always welcome feedback at the time of visit to allow us to rectify what we can. Regards

Greeted by a very amiable host who ensured that all we needed and required for our stay was in our room and where we could purchase extras. This hotel is very central to all activities in Queenscliff. Great stay.

Room Tip: Ask for the Turret room , you wont be disappointed!

A bunch of ten girls stayed at the Vue Grand last Friday night and it was simply delightful. The service is impeccable, nothing was too much trouble and our 5 Balcony Rooms were superb. Overlooking Hesse Street, we made good use of them in the afternoon and again after a delicious grazing style dinner in the Vue Street Bar. We had a VSB Package which includes accommodation, dinner in the VSB including a complimentary drink plus full breakfast in the Grand Dining Room all for $230.00 per room - yes that's right only $115.00 each and it was fabulous. And our singing/karaoke on the balcony (although we stopped around 9pm) was saluted by passers-by and the hotel staff....so we had a wonderfully fun stay at the Vue Grand and celebrated our friends birthday in style. We're definitely coming back. It was one of the best places we've ever stayed. Thank you Jasmyn, Lucinda and Alison for your warm welcome and to the staff in the VSB and dining room for your great hospitality. The Vue Grand gets the biggest tick.................ten middle aged girls can't be wrong!!!!!!!

We visited Vue Grand to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. It was, in a word, spectacular. We were lucky enough to be able to upgrade to the Turret Suite the week before and it was most certainly worth it. The incredible views of stormy skies and the sleepy seaside town were breathtaking. The room is lush without being over complicated, and the amenities are luxurious. We had lunch in the Street Vue Bar and were treated to friendly, fast and attentive service. A great food and beer selection.
Dinner in the restaurant was incredible - service, food and wine all top notch.
The breakfast is one if the best buffet-styles I've ever had - all fresh and delicious.
One thing this grand old hotel is in need of is a bit of a face lift. The carpet and paint in the common areas is worn but that is also a sign of a much visited establishment.
All in all a great weekend away that was enhanced by friendly staff, wonderful service and a beautiful, classic hotel.

Thank you for your spectacular review!
We are always happy when we know that a special occasion has been just the way you like it, and more. We are glad that you got to experience both of our dining venues. The casual Vue Street Bar and its amazing beer list is such a favourite for visitors, but it's our Grand Dining Room that we know never disappoints.

We have been doing some work on painting and general maintenance but do appreciate your feedback. It helps us prioritise what's important from a guests point of view.

Regards

Last weekend we spent a night in Queenscliff, My wife and I spent on night at this GREAT hotel, staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean and warm. Breakfast was fantastic in a grand dining room. The location is excellent, very close to everything you may need for a weekend away. The carpet going up the main stairwell needs replacing.
