On a cold day, we decided to stop by Oscars without a booking. We were shown a table in a small intermit atmosphere with the warmth & smell of a beautiful open fire place.

I had the chicken fettuccine & my wife had the lamb, both were magnificent, especially complimented by a local cab sav.

Would definitely go again.

I had been to Oscar’s for a wedding reception a few years ago and loved the environment very much. The riverside location is fabulous. So I decided to take MiSO (My Significant Other) to Oscar’s to share the beauty and enjoy lunch.

When we arrived, we were shown to our table and offered the choice of Á a la carte or a two course Special Lunch with a glass of wine. We chose the Special Lunch, which had four mains and four desserts from which to choose.

We had a great start to lunch with bread rolls and olive oil which were beautiful.

MiSO then chose "7 Hour Pork Belly 'Caesar' deconstructed, with parmesan custard, crouton, bacon, anchovy".

The dish was over-garnished, the pork was quite dry and it was very disappointing. And apparently, when it was deconstructed, the anchovies were removed as there was no sign of any on the plate nor even in the flavour of the meal.

There were huge quantities of deconstructed croutons, (toasted bread crumbs) and a few salad leaves.

It was bordering upon molecular gastronomy*. Very disappointing.

I chose "Herb Goat’s Cheese, Red capsicum, red wine and ginger poached pear, candied walnuts".

This was an enjoyable dish apart from the dryness of the herbed goat’s cheese, which on its own would not have been a problem, but the dish lacked a significant moist garnish to compensate for the dryness of the herbed cheese. There were tiny quantities of a capsicum mélange, but not enough to be significant.

We both chose "Sticky Date Toffee Pudding, vanilla custard cream, brittle pistachio, caramel ice cream". This was served in an manner I’ve not seen before. The pudding was served as two small segments floating in the sauce, rather than a single serve with the sauce poured over the top. The cream and ice cream were served on the side.

It was a very enjoyable dish, but the tiny serve of ice cream was disappointing as was the minimalist sauce serving. The ice cream and sauce are what make the dish, so why detract from an otherwise enjoyable dessert with tiny portions of the essential components?

To finish lunch we ordered espresso coffee. I assume it was nespresso or something similar. Yuk.

Restaurateurs, please don’t offer espresso coffee if it is not the real deal. Yuk.

A walk on the lawn down to the river is a worthwhile conclusion to lunch as the surroundings are very beautiful. You can actually stand at the river’s edge and put your hand in the water if you want to. Amazing!

Is there another restaurant in Melbourne that has access to the Yarra like this?

Overall, the meal was just OK. The first courses were entrée sized serves and thus were very small as mains. The lunch could have been very good if we had not had the few issues.

We won’t be hurrying back.

After lunch we drove to Mt Donna Buang, which was the highlight of the day, as it had snowed the previous night. Absolutely beautiful.

* I should fess up and admit that I have been silly enough to own a restaurant in my youth. And I much prefer to eat dishes from a menu that the chef has developed and enhanced or even totally created from scratch, rather than dishes prepared in some trendy molecular gastronomique variation.

Nouvelle cuisine can be great but it can destroy a dish too, if taken too far.

My wife and I drove from Melbourne to this nice little place for lunch last Sunday. We did not book and had to wait for about 15 minutes to get a table. We had two course lunch for $35/- per head. Food was excellent and the place was very nice and quiet. I recommend this place to anybody who would like to go for a nice drive and lunch to Warburton.

The food at Oscars is the best in the Valley.

The culinary excellence experienced there is a s good as many places around the world - let alone in Australia. The complexity of the dishes, the element extent and excellence and the way that the elements work with one another is world class.
The Chef (Mark) is to be commended on the culinary experience.
The conversion to Best Western has not yet significantly changed the excellent location and experience of dinner at Oscars on the Yarra.
1. Location - If the distant from Melbourne location is not a problem, the on the Yarra in Warburton Valley location is fantastic. The previously a bit antiseptic environment has evolved into a warmer and better environment - though still modern and large if the doors are open.
2. Service is good and attentive if a bit amateurish at times. The willingness and attentiveness deals well with allergy issues.
3. The wine list is good and is mainly local wine focussed, and the restaurant does accept special wine BYO. The Delatite Riesling is excellent with many of the entrees.
4. Food - as noted above, the good variety and dish complexity, is world class. With some mains including up to 10 separately prepared elements that work well together the dishes are fantastic. The taste ranges and incredible effort to deliver excellence is a dream to experience. The risotto entree was tasty and not too filling, and the rice was not overcooked. The steak main was a joy to experience.
5. The value for money is excellent. It is not very expensive and for the food quality it is great value.
