We stopped by here on our way to Wangaratta for a Saturday lunch and thought about staying the night in one of the pub's rooms. It's a pleasant spot, amongst gum trees and close to the King Valley wineries, the food was good and reasonably priced … but the on that day at least, the pub was patronised by a loud pushy bogans, which made the experience less than pleasant. There was a queue for food and drink orders as a group of bikers had come in all at once; that was fine, the bikers were polite and even apologised to the people behind them for the wait. It finally came for my turn to order, when a bogan woman walked straight in, pushed in and ordered her drinks. The person serving should have noticed I was waiting but went and served the woman who pushed in. I wasn't going to make an issue of it as the woman was with a group of loud quite intimidating men. It was extremely annoying … although the pub can't help the type of people that patronise it, I think that on a busy weekend they should have more than one person at the bar serving. Totally put us off from staying the night so we moved on after lunch.

We stayed at the Mountain View while on a cycling trip of North Eastern Victoria. Accommodation was first class; comfortable beds, quality linen and very clean. Nice touches like fresh milk, T2 teas and fresh coffee.

The bar had local craft beers on tap, which we enjoyed in a beautiful garden setting.

Dinner was excellent which was handy as there were not a lot of dining options in Whitfield on a Wednesday night.

Highly recommended.

After a disappointing dinner in Beechworth the night before, we landed here for lunch. And so glad we did. I had the trout. It was spectacular, and only $27, from memory. The others had the lamb shank and the duck. Also good. The only minor criticism would be against the bowl of chips which seemed as if they hadn't been cooked as a fresh batch. As I said, minor. The service was great. Really friendly. A down-to-earth place with no pretensions but, instead, good food at a good price.

We'd been to the King Valley and driven by the Mountain View Hotel a few times in the past, but never stopped. This time we stopped and were richly rewarded. We sat outside and enjoyed the bird life and beautiful scenery. We had read positive reviews and they were validated with our wonderful lunch of slow-cooked pork shoulder ($24), the most tender we have ever eaten. The Cobb salad ($8) was delicious and a generous size for the price. A bottle of Pizzini Sangiovese Shiraz ($36) went perfectly with the food. We got the impression that it would be hard to get a bad meal here.
