We had breakfast and there was plenty of food and the service was pretty quick. It was cold in the restaurant though which was the only let down.

Dining options in downtown Yarra Glen are limited to a couple of cafes, fish and chips, a pub, and Hargreaves Hill. We had one starter and one main, and that was plenty for two people not terribly hungry. The cumin dusted salt and pepper squid with lemon aioli starter ($16) was really delicious, if a bit overpriced for the quantity you get. The steak sandwich (Black Angus porterhouse with carmelized onion on sourdough) ($25) was perfectly medium rare and wonderful. A local Medhurst Shiraz ($42) was a good choice; like most Yarra Valley Shirazes, it was fairly light-bodied). We also tried two of the house made beers - the Kellerbier pilsner ($5.50/$11) and the pale ale ($5/$10), and both were delicious.

There are not so many good dining options in Yarra Glen so, in many senses, Hargreaves Hill fills a gap. On our last visit, we both had the seafood marinara, a pasta dish with a generous base of oil, perhaps a litte too much, and some nice seafood. I felt that the pasta itself let this dish down- it was overcooked and resembled the texture of Chinese one minute noodles. A top quality commercial hard wheat pasta, cooked al dente, would have provided a better carrier for the sauce. Given the pool of garlicky sauce, we asked early on for some bread to mop it up. This didn't arrive in time for me. My husband begged again for some, as he still had remaining pasta and sauce in his bowl. The waitress was lured over, where she admitted to giving our bread ( two small slices) to another table. She returned another five minutes later with some poor quality microwaved spongey hot bread. It sufficed. Bread should be part of any well sauced Italian meal and the recent trend of dropping it from the table is a sad one!!
The dessert was to die for, a generous almondy slab of cake, with figs in syrup and pistachios.
I will return for a dessert and a nice glass of wine. Not sure about the rest.
