Owner description: Belle Meade Plantation is a non-profit historic site located in Nashville, TN. Established in 1807, Belle Meade was revered as the greatest thoroughbred stud farm in the United States. It was home to Iroquois, the first American bred horse to win the Epsom Derby and the great foundation sire,Bonnie Scotland, whose descendants include Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Native Dancer, Big Brown and California Chrome. Belle Meade was owned and operated by the Harding-Jackson family for nearly a century from 1807 until 1906. Today their home is restored to its turn of the century appearance along with several original outbuildings.

Such an unexpected delight. Way exceeded our expectations. The tour was so informative and since we love horses, it made it that much better. The Winery was great too . . . bought several bottles and then enjoyed a bottle right there with cheese and cracker. Definitely at great place !

So they have a new tour here, which focuses on the slave population, and what happened after the civil war, etc. Considering that there were (+-) 130 slaves owned by this family, serving 6-8 family members, it's kind of amazing that the lives of these people at many, many plantations have not been explored, documented, celebrated, mourned, any where near the level that the owners have.
So we did both tours, kind of a southern version of upstairs/downstairs. They both were great, and I would encourage anyone to explore the lives of all the people who lived at, and made these plantations work.
Kudos to the Board at Belle Meade for getting this tour going!!! Keep up the good work!!!!

My family loved Belle Meade! The tours of the grounds and home were awesome, and we especially enjoyed the tour guides (in the house) dressed in garments of the time period. The adults with us loved the wine tasting, and the fudge was to die for! Overall, the plantation, grounds, winery, and candy shop were all worth the time and money spent!

This was a great tour. I love looking at old mansions and had never looked at a plantation before. I would recommend!

This is a new tour that just began this month. We were fortunate to have the originator and researcher give an engaging and educational tour and discussion about the other inhabitants of Belle Meade--the slaves.
Steven has done extensive research including document research and oral history reviews in order to understand and "know" the slaves that made such a difference at Belle Meade. With pictures from his IPAD and visits to the areas that slaves inhabited one is able to understand the atmosphere of this time beyond the Mansion tour.
You must do BOTH tours to totally understand this time period.
