“Nice”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

I was a bit nervous after reading the reviews and I was pleased when we arrived. The hotel is close to Opry Mills Mall, Grand Ole opry and right off the interstate. The location was perfect for what we wanted. The room was nice and clean, staff seemed nice and accommodating. There is a nice bar/grill called "Opry Backstage Grill" which had good food and nighttime entertainment. There was also a morning atrium cafe with a limited starbucks coffee. Don't buy $3 coffee by the front door like we did the first morning, go to the café it is cheaper and freshly made. We did not use the pool but it looked nice. Our room was an inside room by the elevator which was very noisy and woke us up, so request another one if possible. The hotel overall was nice and clean and was reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Stay away from the elevator.

I arrived at 5:15pm on a Thursday with my wife and two kids (1 and 3 yrs old). The outside rooms were the only ones that had adjoining rooms which we needed for my parents who were soon arriving later that evening. When we went through the entrance way, it looked very nice, but as soon as we entered the atrium to navigate to our room, I realized that this was not the typical Marriott quality hotel that I have grown accustomed to for business travel. When we arrived at our "motel" style room and opened the door, we were hit with the smell of what I initially thought was mildew. I immediately sniffed around, the walls, the bathroom, the bedding, but couldn't determine that the smell was coming from anywhere specific, but if I had to identify a place it might have been the floor. Anyways I turned the A/C on high assuming it would help to dehumidify the place because it really felt like the humidity was in the 80s or so, but it just got cold, still smelled funny and felt wet. Normally, I would have relocated, but we didn't have another option and we needed to get settled in. We quickly stopped noticing the smell (unless you left and re-entered the room).

I asked the front desk what it was and if the interior rooms where any different and they thought that it was the chemicals used to clean the rooms. The staff was very polite and offered to bring deodorizers, but my wife is sensitive to strong smells and we already had one smell to deal with :-)

Anyways, my assumption (just an assumption) is that the smell is simply that of an exterior room that doesn't have the A/C running all the time.

Overall, the staff was stellar. The quickly checked us in. My parents arrived around 1am and they were promptly provided extra towels and a fridge even though it was late at night. There room did not have quite as bad of a smell, but they also kept their room much cooler than our room.

Other challenges of the room were that the bathroom sink faucet handle came off, the bathroom was quite small and the shower curtain touched you as you showered (I am used to the curved shower curtains these days in hotels). Also, the sleep number beds might have been nice for us to use if it weren't for that they were loud and we didn't want to adjust them once the kids were sleeping.

I would say that this is a decent hotel, with great service, great access to restaurants and the nearby mall. Just not the standard of hotel that I look for when travelling though.

We weren't really looking forward to staying here. We had some free stay certificates to use, and Marriott had quietly raised the categories of most of the hotels in Nashville we used to stay in, so this is what we could afford. We'd driven by the place, and we weren't expecting much. And, when we arrived, the architecture hadn't changed -- still looks like the old roadside motel.

But oh, are looks deceiving! It's a great hotel. Based on looks and price, we were expecting a Fairfield quality hotel or less (and, we have stayed at our fair share of Fairfields). But, excepting the noise issue, it is definitely a Courtyard quality hotel, making it a huge bargain.

It's a 5 minute walk or free 2 minute shuttle ride to the Gaylord Opryland, without the service challenges that a hotel that big encounters. And, of course, it's both a Marriott and part of Opryland, so the desk clerk can do just about everything any nearby concierge can do.

One big, big ding: it is very noisy. We could hear folks walking down the hall. We could hear the TV in the next room. We could hear beer cans being opened in the next room. And, of course, this is a tough one for management to change, so you've just got to be prepared to deal with it. But that's the ONLY ding. And, one little observation: there's no room service, but there is a very nice restaurant/bar that has take out, though it closes early. But, it's with easy walking distance of any number of nice little restaurants, and has a free shuttle to the Gaylord Opryland across the street (and other places).

Parking is free (as an aside there's a free shuttle to the hotel that charges $21 / night to park). And, when we walked inside, we kind of went "wow"! The lobby is upscale Marriott. The desk clerks were upscale Marriott (we kind of had a complicated check in -- multiple free stay certificates -- which they handled quickly and efficiently).

The inside of the hotel was very nice. It appeared to be recently remodeled. Our room was nice... big, well appointed, and well equipped. We had a room on the inside of the building, on a hallway overlooking the pool (others are on exterior hallways). Ample hot water and shower. Free internet worked everywhere and consistently. Heated indoor pool was very nice. AC worked flawlessly.

And, it's relatively close to everything. 15 minutes from the airport. 15 minutes from downtown. 5 minutes or less to the Grand Ole Opry and Opry Mills Mall. 5 minutes walking to the Gaylord Opryland (2 or less via free shuttle).

A perfect example of why one should not judge a book by its cover. Based on the outside appearance -- definitely looks like an old motel -- we would not have stayed there. But, we're glad we did, and definitely will again.

Gaylord was booked so we tried The Inn. Average at best. We've also stayed at the nearby Hampton Inn which seemed better. Not one thing stood out as bad and not one thing stood out as good. Was struck by the desk clerk not even speaking to us the morning we departed. A "Thank you, hope you had a good stay," would have been nice. We had an interior room and it seemed quite outdated.

It was clean and our room was quiet. But average is about the most stellar thing I can say about it.

This hotel had a great location and the rooms were clean and updated. The shuttle service was great. The pool across the street at the larger Gaylord property is avail to inn guests and is also very nice.

Room Tip: Ask for an inside room as these are updated.

We stayed four nights in an "exterior" room at this hotel. The building is an older "motel" which has been remodeled and is very attractive on the inside. The rooms are very clean. The food in the restaurant is surprisingly delicious. The problems include those cited by earlier reviewers --
1. The hotel is extremely noisy. I was awakened daily at 5:00 or 5:30AM by the passing buses, cars and motorcycles on the freeway which was right outside our single paned window. It literally sounded like there was no glass in the window. I travel A LOT and I have never stayed anywhere that is as noisy as this was. We were there for a convention and all the other conventioneers no matter where their rooms were located reported the same problems.
2. The bathroom is the smallest I have ever seen in a hotel. You literally must squeeze back between the toilet and the tub to get the door to close. The door brushes the tub and the front of the toilet. Someone that is overweight would not be able to fit in or to close the door!
3. The toilet paper is the thinnest, cheapest and worst quality I have ever seen anywhere. They must have to send away special to get toilet paper this bad. It is almost impossible to use even when folded and bunched many times. It literally shreds while coming off the roll.
4. Housekeeping was friendly and nice and did a great job. Unfortunately, they are sorely understaffed and did not get to our room until 6:00PM each day. That meant that we spent the day in a dirty, messy room or had to tidy the room ourselves. Neither is the service I was paying for.
The hotel is in a nice location and not too far from downtown. The staff is friendly but from the front desk to housekeeping to the restaurant they are sorely understaffed. The interiors have been updated nicely but the exterior is very dated. There is no breakfast available on property.

Room Tip: Get interior room if you can afford the extra fee (double the price) for one.

The hotel will provide a solid, clean, and comfortable stay if that's all you need and are budget conscience.

I don't think id stay for a long vacation as the rooms seem small and our bathroom was tiny.
