“Fabulous Stay!”
Reviewed 29 May 2012

We had a fabulous five day stay at Blue Smoke Mountain Cabins in mid-May. What a great property. The Moonshine Ridge Cabin was perfect for us---quiet and peaceful. The cabin was very clean and well equipted. This was a fabulous place to grab a quick bite in the morning, pack a lunch, hit the trails, and then grill and relax. We couldn't have asked for more. Thanks Linda!

Talk about bang for your buck!

Everything you could want for a mountain trip - affordable prices, rustic with a touch of modern, and awesome views. As a previous reviewer stated, these photos don't do the properties justice.

Linda Brady is one of the sweetest people - she makes sure we're happy. She maintains her properties very well, and does the best to ensure each guest leaves wanting to come back.

Our property of choice is Windrider Cabin - it has 5 beds (3 real bedrooms, 2 beds tucked away in unobtrusive locations), a rather large kitchen/dining area, living room with a fire place, and two bathrooms - one of which has a huge whirlpool tub with windows overlooking the mountains. I know this may be silly - but I'm a big guy, and I can lay down in this tub all the way without my feet sticking out! The huge porch is also nice - we spend a lot of mornings out there with coffee and nature.

My ONLY problem - and this has NOTHING to do with the cabin at ALL - is the abundance of flying stinging insects in the spring and summer. If you go - be sure to take some wasp/hornet spray. Funny... I take on the IRS all the time without a flinch. But let a wasp or yellowjacket fly towards me and I turn into a little girl. Heh.

Room Tip: The higher you go, the better the views.

My wife and I stayed in the Moonshine Cabin for two nights during fall color season. The cabin had exactly what we were looking for, in that it was a bit rustic, but not dumpy. The area was very quiet, and though there were others staying in nearby cabins, we never heard them. The upstairs bed was comfortable and everything was mostly clean, though there was a bit of mold in the shower. We bought food and drinks in Townsend and prepared most meals at the cabin, eating out once at a bbq place on the river in town that was very good (can't remember the name, but they also rent innertubes for floating the river). The hot tub was very nice, though it seemed that at least a couple of the jets weren't working; however, since there were about a dozen jets, it didn't matter too much...the hot water felt great anyway, and the setting of the hot tub on the quiet screened deck overlooking a slope down into the woods was fantastic. The rate was about on par with other cabins in the area, and seemed fair. The owners were a delight to deal with, very friendly and trusting, without any of the penalty signs posted everywhere in the cabin that you so often see. Access to Great Smoky Mts National Park was pretty easy, took perhaps 15 minutes to be in the park, which we did both days for hiking trips. Bottom line: I'd definitely stay here again.

The photos don't do this place justice. I went up here after tax season (I'm a bean-counter) to check the place out, as I usually travel to the mountains with a group of friends. Until now, we've stayed in Maggie Valley, North Carolina at a cabin tucked away under trees beside a creek... with NO mountain views.

This place has everything I wanted. And for a price cheaper than what we were paying! The whole place was clean, and the only thing we wanted for was a can opener.

The cabin felt more like a home away from home than any place I've ever stayed. The kitchen was huge. The appliances were modern. The fireplace is gorgeous. The decor is homey and inviting. The beds are comfortable. And I can't tell you how much I enjoyed both the jetted tub in the master bath and the whirlpool on the deck after a day of walking around Asheville, NC.

The owners have gone above and beyond to make sure their guests' stays are comfortable.

For these reasons and countless others - we're calling Wind Rider our new mountain home, and will use the Bradys for all future trips.

We spent 2 nights in Wind Rider while visiting the Great Smokies. The cabin is decorated beautifully. Linda has thought of everything to make you feel at home. We cooked breakfast and dinner at the cabin and found everything we needed in the way of cookware and dinnerware. The beds were comfortable.

As there were only two of us, the layout was great for us. We only needed to use two of the three bedrooms. I do agree with past postings that the bed in the downstairs open area would be a little awkward for a group.

The location is perfect to drive into the Great Smoky Mountains. Also a very nice visitor center right in Townsend.

The highlight of Wind Rider is the view from the deck and the bedrooms. Sitting on the deck in the morning and evening was so peaceful. The beauty of the mountains, and singing of the birds. It just does not get any better than that.

My family of four (myself, my wife and two daughters ages 13 and 8) had been searching for a vacation spot near the Smoky's to do a multi-family vacation with a fishing buddy of mine and his wife and two boys (ages 4 and 7). From our previous trip to GSMNP, we knew that we wanted to stay in the Townsend, TN area again and unlike the last trip being directly next to a trout stream was not a pre-requisite, as this was to be a family vacation.

We chose the Wind Rider cabin as our choice and quickly sent the deposit (they do not accept credit card payments, and will accept checks or cash as of our stay...just FYI). The hill, which other reviewers have commented on, to get to the cabins is STEEP but that just means that you are up in elevation and will have a great view and in our four nights of staying there we did not have any trouble making it up or down the hill to get to our cabin.

As others have stated, the website for Wind Rider is a bit misleading, as this is really only a three bedroom cabin with an additional bed located in the main floor living area, and another located in the main area upstairs just outside of the two bedrooms. There is a bathroom with tub/shower on the main floor, however the upstairs bathroom only features a large jetted tub with no shower head. For two families vacationing together, these things didn't make a huge difference, but had we found these reviews prior to our trip I believe I would have booked elsewhere, as the cabin really was not big enough to provide both families some personal space without intruding on the main living floor.

The cabin itself is very nice on the inside and was very clean. We have learned in staying in cabin rentals that it is always wise to travel with your own cooking utensils if you plan to use the cabin to cook in. The kitchen, was furnished with more cooking utensils and pots / pans then most that we had stayed in, but there was a severe lack of drinking glasses (a total of 6 total, not including coffee cups) and there was not a spatula to use, so we purchased one and left it for the next renter.

The cabin also has a washer / dryer, which came in extremely handy as there did not appear to be enough towels for all 8 of us staying. But in Blue Smoke Cabins defense, we never called for more and Linda (the owner) was extremely helpful and nice.

The view from the deck is amazing, and the hot on the deck really is nice. However, the carpenter bees that swarm around the cabin are plentiful and really take away from being able to sit out on the deck and enjoy the weather and view. If the porch had been screened in this would not have been an issue, and it wasn't an issue on our last day when the weather turned cooler. But something should be done about them, as they were everywhere.

All that being said, would we stay in Wind Rider again? Absolutely. But not with 8 people. It would have been the perfect size for my family of four, and who knows, we might be back when we get the urge to go back to the Smoky'ss.

We stayed in the Cherokee Breeze cabin with four kids (age 13, 17, 20 and 23- we are in our late 40s) during July 2009 as we drove to the East coast from Wisconsin. We wanted to avoid an overnight in noisy Gatlinburg and this was a wonderful alternative. The cabin is very nicely furnished and seems to be appointed with everything you would need for a longer stay. The beds were very comfortable, which was important to us after a 12 hour drive. The master bedroom has a whirlpool for two and lace sheets on the bed - just another surprising touch when you pull back the quilt in this log cabin. There are two other sleeping areas upstairs where the kids slept. You will want to note that upstairs the bedrooms are not separated by a wall to the ceiling - they are more like loft areas with 8-foot high walls and a twenty foot vaulted ceiling. This was perfectly fine for our kids sleeping arrangements, though. We were thrilled with the attention to care that the owners have obviously paid to the decoration of this cabin. Everything was absolutely beautiful.

We pulled in late at night and had a bit of trouble finding the place. We initially drove right past the place. Then we had a little trouble with the hill. The collection of cabins sit on a ridge in the mountains and one of our cars couldn't make it up the hill. Apparently, this happens fairly often because when the owner of the cabins heard about our problem, he just threw his shoes on, got into his pickup truck and pushed our little Hyundai right up the hill. We were very relieved that half of our party wouldn't have to walk up that hill!

There is an outdoor hot tub that would easily accommodate six or eight people on the back porch. It is situated under a tin roof, generating a lovely patter with raindrops. Both the back and front porch have beautiful views of the mountains. We were so sorry to have to leave the next morning but we will never forget our stay at the Blue Smoke Mountain Cabins. A terrific choice.
