“Great Dude Ranch - Fun for the Kids”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2006

The owner and staff of Rancho Cortez really make you feel welcome. We showed up at noon and were hustled to lunch and were trail riding the next hour.

The trail riding is mostly level rocky ground with a few dry washes to go through. Suitable for beginners. More challenging terrain is available in the nearby State park. The price includes two one hour rides per day or you can take a two hour ride into the hill country.

I'm a horse owner and am always concerned about how a facility takes care of its animals. Rancho Cortez provides excellent care for its horses. They are well fed and well shod. That's saying something since the area is in a long term drought and they are obviously spending a lot on hay.

Speaking of eating, the meals are just excellent! Jose' is a great cook and combines traditional western American cooking with some Mexican dishes. Pretty healthy too, but it's up to you to watch portion control since Jose' doesn't want you to go away hungry.

Pool is small but clean. There's a recreation barn with TV, pool table and synth keyboard. Our room was small but nearly new. I suspect they made it that way to keep you from staying inside.

Larry (the owner) is fantastic with kids. They won't want to leave when your stay is up.

By the way, the pictures on their website are representative of the facilities. Rancho Cortez isn't Hilton Hotel fancy but I suspect if your checking into dude ranches that's not your priority.

Have fun!

My husband and I just spent 3 days 2 nights at this wonderful dude ranch and had a terrific time! We were a couple of rookies from VA, and thoroughly enjoyed our horse riding experience. Larry (owner) and crew made us feel comfortable and right at home. Larry's wonderful personality really makes the ranch, he played Texas hold 'em with my husband and other guests until 1AM one evening! The next night, he told cowboy stories by the campfire. Jose the ranch cook, was terrific. We had fresh BBQ, homemade potato salad, grilled chicken, hamburgers, bacon and sausage breakfast burritos - DELICIOUS! Desserts twice a day! The pool and hot tub were immaculate, as was our room. Larry took us all to a saloon in downtown Bandera one night and we two-stepped for hours. Hope to make it back there soon - we had a fabulous time.

My family and I thought the Ranch was awesome, we've just returned from a 2 week stay and now need a vacation to get over everything we did on the ranch.
The staff couldn't have been more helpfull and made us feel part of the family we all wish we were still there.
They had us rounding up cows for fun, hay rides with these 2 huge horses like they have on the budwiser advert, they even enterd us in a real Texas rodeo, I have to say I was nervous but the owner took grat care of us and it was fantastic, a real action packed day, every day.
Although my wife and I did sneak off and relax in the pool by day and hot tub by night while the staff kept the horse rides going and everyone happy.
So we are already planning our next trip.
Can't wait to get the photo's developed, must get a digital :-)

This might have been a nice dude ranch at one time, and still could be. Nice cabins, but.... the trail rides offered no instruction, if you know how to ride that is great, if you don't, and have children, then be careful. Our child almost fell off his horse! Plus the wrangler kept bragging about how much he drank and the tale he was chasing. The food was terrible, unless you like leftovers. Leftover barbecue, horrible frozen hamburgers, leftover breakfast, not a fresh fruit in sight! And the only veggies I found were on my hamburger. The only gourmet you'll find here is a kamikazee one! The pool was slightly larger then my bathtub, and the hot tub had cigarette buts floating in it. The staff was friendly. If the food had been decent our family would have had an okay time, as it was, we couldn't wait to leave so we could get some decent food in us!

If they ever turn this dude ranch around it will be a good one, for now, avoid, unless you have no taste buds and like beer cans floating in your pool!

Just returned from a 4 night stay at Rancho Cortez. We brough our RV so did not stay in their rooms. The staff were superb with my kids (4 & 11). Larry (the owner)makes everyone feel like they are visiting his home and are welcome! We did 2 rides per day out on the ranch. No galloping or running, but the scenery is very pretty. We also did cow herding which was great fun. My kids said this was the best place they have been. When asked if they would like to go skiing, visit Disney World or come back to Rancho Cortez, they both said without hesitation...Rancho Cortez.

We stayed at Rancho Cortez for 4 days in September 2004 and had a brilliant time. Having never really been on a horse before I left the ranch feeling I had learned to ride and in the process had great fun.
The ranch was the best part of our Texas trip as we got to meet lots of great people (and animals!) and also got to spend time in a relaxing and fun environment.
