“A Wonderful Dude Ranch Experience for an Urban Family”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

I chose the Silver Spur Ranch for our Dude Ranch experience based on earlier TripAdvisor reviews, and the experience exceeded all expectations.

Jay, Maria, Bubba, Tom, Kidd and all the other crew members went out of their way to make our two days stay at the ranch a fun, authentic experience. In fact, we marveled at the way they made every family or group with whom our stay overlapped feel equally special and welcome. Hats off to their southern-living hospitality and country charm!! Our positive interaction with each of these people really set the tone for a memorable experience.

We arrived at the ranch during a lovely 85 degree time of year, and opted for daily horseback rides, swimming in the enormous pool, looking for fossils, playing billiards, fussball, ping pong and tether ball, the nightly hayride and the marshmallow roasts. Bubba even taught us how to toss a lasso!

With regard to every detail, the crew made the difference...

Our cabin accommodations were serviceable, certainly not luxurious, but clean and clearly adequate. We spent little time in the cabin but when my son threw up all over and I hastily cleaned what I could, the crew members graciously came to my rescue, with a smile!

My City Slicker boys initially resolved not to ride horses. However, with some appropriate encouragement, the wranglers (Jay, Kidd and Tom) got the boys onto the trail. My younger son's horse liked to mosey through the bushes, and at one point my son got tangled. He was in not danger, and Tom could not have handled it better. He untangled my son, gave him positive encouragement and a little laughter, and set the horse going before my son could register any fear. Both kids came home telling their friends how much they liked horseback riding and asking when we could go again.

Meals, served cafeteria-style, were substantial and quite delicious. When the staff discovered one of my children is lactose intolerant, they went out of their way to cook another meal for him. We hadn't asked ahead for it, and I didn't expect such thoughtful attention.

Both my boys ranked Silver Spur Ranch the #1 thing they did in Texas on Spring Break -- beating out NASA, the Alamo, Fiesta Days and JFK's assassination location (all pretty cool in and of themselves).

We took our grandchildren to the Silver spur Ranch last month. The staff was wonderful; everyone smiled and was very friendly. We were there on an "off" week, so there weren't very many people there, but the staff still did everything to make our stay enjoyable. Jay was especially friendly and helpful and seemed happy to visit with us all and tell us about the ranch and the area.
The wranglers were all funny with jokes and stories. They remembered the horses we rode, made sure the stirrups were comfortable, and had the same horse ready for each of us for all the rides. The rides were fun, just the right length (a little over one hour twice a day), and just challenging enough to make it interesting for us first-time riders. We were given good instruction on riding and help getting on and off the horses every time.
Our rooms were comfortable and clean. We didn't have much luck getting reception on the television or our cell phones --which was a nice change. The leather sofas in the large "living room" were very comfortable and the whole room was very pleasant. The pool is gigantic.
The evening activities didn't include any elaborate entertainment but were fine. There was a nice hay ride every night with stops so we could see lots of longhorns up close. Following that was a campfire and s'mores, and one night there was a brief roping lesson.
As someone else mentioned, there wasn't much activity planned other than the horseback rides, but we all enjoyed relaxing, swimming, and visiting with the other guests when we weren't riding.
We really appreciated the personal service and help from all the staff. The food was very good, and they even packed a picnic lunch for us as we had to leave before lunch time. Everyone treated us like guests and not just customers.

We visited the Silver Spur in March during spring break and had a wonderful time! We rode horses, went on hay rides to see the longhorns, hiked to the fossil pit to dig for fossils, gathered eggs from the hen house, pet the donkeys and goats, made smores around a camp fire, and had wonderful meals. We went for two trail rides each day and the wranglers were helpful and friendly, and the horses did great on the very rocky trails. A special thanks to the wrangler Paul for making us feel very welcome and helping us to have a great experience with the horses. ( Remember to tip your wranglers...they work very hard to keep you safe and insure a pleasant ride) Also if you are there on a Monday that is when the farrier visits. We enjoyed watching him change the shoes on the horses and he was very nice to teach us about his craft. I just have to say one more thing about the food...it is delicious! They have a nice variety and there is always plenty. They even keep drinks and fresh baked cookies out in the dining room for anytime you need a snack. One evening while we were there it was raining and they entertained us with karaoke in the lodge. The kids also enjoyed the pool table and games in the lodge.

We had such a great time that we have already booked our next visit to the ranch in the Fall.
One thing to be aware of is that the phone and internet signals are not good there so plan on just enjoying the outdoors and the animals.

My son and I were visiting Texas on business from UK and decided to have a bit of R&R and dad son bonding. We both live full on busy lives with very little time to ourselves, So a visit to a dude ranch seemed a good way to pass the week end.

Well we had a ball, a great welcome when we arrived then a visit to the longhorn herd .. towed by a pickup.. then songs around the campfire

The next day a gentle ride out for an hour on well behaved horses and then finally as the Ranch was not too busy Sherry took us down town Bandera (pop 900) to see some real western two stepping. and to the Longhorn bar for a honky tonk experience to beat all honky tonks experiences ,, an experience that that took at least one of our party 48 hours to recover from.!!!

We felt privileged as visitors from a very long way away to experience this element of US culture .. something we would never have done if we had not stayed at the Silver Spur.

Thank you Sherry and Jay and Kid and Bubba and Gary and Tom and of course Alison the Chauffeur/cook and bringer home of naughty boys!

For looking after us so well.

What else??

The food too was lovingly cooked , wholesome and there was plenty of it.

This ranch is small enough for you to be personally looked after and this is a family business where you are truly a person and not a number or a statistic to be processed.

If you are thinking of a dude ranch in Bandera .. don't hesitate .. visit the Silver Spur!!

My family and I have visited Silver Spur several times now. My kids are now 9 and 12 and LOVE this place. The staff is warm and friendly, food is good and plenty, the rides are comfortable for the kids. I love that we can all "unplug" from our phones and computers and enjoy old-fashioned family fun. Ranch house is large and comfortable, pool table, foosball, ping pong. It's always a great way to have fun with the kids. Actually got to ride on a longhorn and gather eggs from chicken coop! Not the usual activity for us city folk!

Room Tip: Look at their web site for pictures of the different rooms. Choose a cabin for a bit more privacy o...

We recently stayed at the Silver Spur Ranch for a corporate retreat. We had a wonderful time! The customer service was exceptional, the food was delicious and the accomodations were great! The fire in the great room was a favorite place to sit and talk and play games. The ranch atmostphere was relaxing and charming. We will go back soon!!!
