“Majestic Mayan Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2013

I wanted to experience a unique Mayan experience in Dec 2012 and the Hidden Valley Inn offerered a variety of activities and locations, which made the whole experience unBelizeable. I had an adventure packed three days with RIck, as my awesome guide. We went to Rio Frio Cave, Caracol & Rio on Pools on the first day. Followed by Barton Creek Cave Canoeing & Zip Lining the second day. On the third day, Rick guided us to a tour of the Hidden Valley Estate, where we hiked to Secret Falls, then onto Butterfly Falls, where we went for a refreshing dip. That afternoon we went to a Mayan Village for a cultural afternoon, which was really interesting. Returning to the Inn, for a glass of their refreshing lemongrass tea, was something I looked forward to, after a full day of activities. The meals at the Inn were delicious as well. The staff were great, a joy to chat and visit with. If one is adventurous, this place offers many activities and tours that one can partake in, I really enjoyed it. A tad out of the way but a very special place.

Had the best time here, and the people and service is definitely what sets this resort apart from others. Oscar, from my experience, is the best your guide in Belize..hidden valley is very lucky to have him along with Freddy, he knows everything about birds!! Beautiful yoga platforms, 4 course unique, delicious meals, and butterfly falls is a must! Had a wonderful time, and will be returning soon.

Stayed hear a few nights after Christmas. Its tucked away in the mountain pine region and you should be prepared for seclusion. It’s about an hour’s drive down the western highway then turn off and another hour minimum up a dirt track to the hotel.

We were greeted to a hand massage and drink, then shown around the hotel and to the room. It is a lovely place. Rooms were clean, comfortable and the staff are great.
We walked some of the trails the next day, the staff were really helpful giving advice and even offered to take our car further up the trail for us so we could drive back. Highly recommend a dip in Butterfly Falls.

Next day we set of for Caracol Ruins, about 90 mins further down the dirt track, another great day out with Ricadro, very informative and the ruins were quiet because they are difficult to get to would recommend it.

Overall a fabulous hidden place, good to spend early evening in the bar chatting and comparing the days adventures with other guests.

One tip though, take bugs spray for the sand flies.

I had wanted to stay closer to a town but could not find anything that worked for our family during Christmas. This spot is beautiful and quite well appointed . I would recommend it for a short period of time with lots of day trips to the interesting sights nearby. Be prepared for LONG car rides to the day trips that are definitely worth doing from the ATM to tubing on the river. HVI Is lovely with great food and service. Prices are steep but you do feel as though you get a good return...,, even getting picked up when we took a long route on one of our hikes to butterfly falls. They have us two way radios on our hike . We had a great stay and felt that we had escaped from it all at HVI. Definitely check out Butterfly falls which is worth the trek.

My first experience with a "resort": It is a lovely hotel, with lovely staff. We had excellent service, and it's so peaceful... Decent food, nice pool, LOTS of great hiking (not to be missed: the Cascade Falls Trail). Walter is a fine asset to the hotel: he is full of information regarding both flora and fauna, and makes one feel comfortable.
Yes, it's extremely expensive, but if you're going to splurge, I can't recommend a better place.

My husband and I made last minute plans to visit Belize. We found Hidden Valley Inn thru Trip Advisor. What a wonderful experience!. The inn is up in the mountains on a large private preserve. We were picked up at the airport in Belize City and from the moment we got in the van to the moment he dropped us off back at the airport we felt like royalty. Wonderful staff, food and rooms. The property has beautiful waterfalls and hiking trails. We highly recommend Hidden Valley Inn if you are staying in the San Ignacio area of the Cayo district.

Room Tip: Cabin # 8 and # 7 have a screened in patio with hammock. #8 was our room and it had an awesome outdo...

Booked based on the tripadvisor reviews, and wasn't exactly wow'd by my experience. It states a luxury resort, but I would compare it to a Sheraton in regards to quality and amenities.

Flew into Belize City, and took a $200 cab ride to the resort. Took over 1 hr to get to the junction before heading up the unpaved road. It was only 23 miles up the hill, and I didnt expect it to take so long, but it took up 1 hr to get up the hill to the resort. Not enough people tell you this, so it was very unexpected for us on this trip.

Pros:
- Staff is friendly
- Free mountain bikes to borrow to ride on trails
- Habanero salsa in the dining room
- Firewood was replenish nightly
- Common area had board games and books available

Cons:
- $74 (US) to get to San Ignacio or down to the main road, was able to negotiate a $60 rate with a cab driver in San Ignacio for the rest of the trip.
- $148 (US) to get from resort to Belmopan airport. Was able to negotiate a $100 rate with same cab driver
- $190pp (US) + border fees + entrance fee + 12.5% RST fee for Tikal. ($70pp). I ended up booking BZM tours with Albert (info@bzmtours.com) for $175 all-inclusive. It was a private tour with just my boyfriend and I, and we had a great time. He took really good care of us, and let us do pit stops to pick up food in town before heading back up to Hidden Valley.
- $165+12.5% RST for ATM (Crysal cave). We booked with Carlos the Caveman (carlos.caveguide@yahoo.com) for $85pp + $74 cab ride that the hotel charged us to get down the hill. Carlos was already great. Helped up find a cab for us and figure out fair pricing. The cab driver was very reliable, and even came early the next day to make sure we made our flight.
- Food is not very mediocre. Which is why we skipped our meals after the 2nd day and picked up food in San Ignacio to eat at the hotel (no other food options around for about a 45min-1 hr drive). Our black bean soup the 1st night was burnt, but would have tasted good if the cook was watching the beans more carefully, and ice cream was extremely icy due to there being very little cream/eggs in relation to the milk/coconut milk. I worked in the kitchen as a cook for 2.5 years and a little bit of a foodie, so I feel like I'm credible in this area.
- Very spotty wifi
- Poor quality bathroom amenities (shampoo, conditioner, etc)
- No TV
- Have to go to the front desk to make outside calls
- Electricity and internet our off by 12am. Generator is turned off.
- Took 15 min to check out in the morning after I had let them know of our check out time the day before. Credit card machine was down bc their internet was down, and they said we had to close out with cash, so we ended up waiting until they reboot their system.
- Jacuzzi broken and pool not heated very well.

Overall. Good if you like nature, want quiet time, don't expect to leave the resort too much, and expecting a Sheraton or Embassy Suites. If you're looking to do lots of activities off property, looking for something closer to a Westin, JW, or St. Regis, and want to explore the local restaurants and shops this is highly not recommended.

ps. after a long day of excursions back to back, do you really want to spend an extra 2 hrs worth of travel on an unpaved road everday?

Room Tip: Don't think that the outdoor bathtub would have made a difference with all the mosquitos around.
