“Exactly what I was looking for!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2014

I cannot say enough about HVI. If you're looking for a personal experience where people actually care about you and your experience in Belize, then this is the place to be. They take time and energy to make sure you really have a wonderful experience. It's very apparent that they all take pride in their work and are proud of the Inn itself. The grounds are immaculate...the bungalows are adorable...the hiking trails are amazing...the FOOD was delicious. I can't remember the chef's name, but she's been there over 15 years, I think! The Inn owns over 7000 acres, so you can hike and bike all day and still not see the same thing twice.

From the second Walter picked me up at the airport, to the warm greeting by Miguel and team, to the best guided trip I've ever taken to Caracol by Rick...I just really can't say enough. I travel for a living, so I know the impersonal and apathetic experiences of most hotels. This was NOT that. I actually feel like the became my friends while I was there. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

"rude staff", "expensive food" etc… Have been waiting a long time to make the trip to Belize and Hidden Valley. Weather aside (unseasonable, extended rain), Hidden Valley has exceeded expectations. Lovely facility, attentive and friendly staff - all-in-all a very nice jungle lodge managed and maintained to a high standard. Yes, it is out of the way on a long bumpy road but almost all secondary roads in Belize are beaten to death by the extended rains. I rarely go to the trouble of writing reviews - the staff deserves every accolade!! Certainly high end and not for the budget minded but there are plenty of other options for travelers that require that. Come and enjoy!!

Room Tip: The luxury suites have a wonderful screened porches and decadent outdoor showers.

You'll have read/see from all the other reviews here how well situated Hidden Valley is, both for its own 19,000 acres of jungle forest and astonishing waterfalls and trails, as well as for the other key sites in the area (ATM cave, Barton Creek etc). It is all true. Despite the terrible (and unseasonal) weather washing away some smaller bridges on the trails the week before, the staff had worked hard to make it all available and safe. This meant we had a great time exploring and a wonderful swim in the large pristine pool below their 'centrepiece' Butterfly Falls.

I'd echo the comments of the food, however, below. The food was good (though limited options) and was pricey compared with other similar quality hotels/lodges/resorts in the area.

Hopefully that will have improved. The complementary hand massage on arrival was a nice touch :-)

We had the chance to come to Hidden Valley Inn during the Thanksgiving Holiday. This is a perfect place to go and get lost from turkey, dysfunctional families or just the world. Very remote and peaceful, the Inn offers endless nature trails, hidden waterfalls, swimming holes, creeks, lots of birds and wildlife. We were able to cover probably a third of what is there to explore. We hiked for 10 miles to secret pools, butterfly falls, several creeks and the coffee plantation. We had the secret pools to ourselves and only saw another couple during one of the hikes. The Inn itself is very quaint, lush beautiful garden trails to each cottage. Our room had a wood burning fireplace that was put to good use every night. The temperature highs were in the low 70’s and low 50 at night. Do not let this great weather fool you when it comes to bugs; specifically the no see ums. They are really there and will bite without taking prisoners. I think they have evolved to withstand below zero weather. It only rained one of the four days we were there the whole day. I advise on getting a vehicle with 4x4 since the roads are not paved and get very muddy and slippery. The food is very good but limited with dinning options. They do offer a nightly special that seems to vary. We had a couple meals in San Ignacio that we coordinated after our excursions since it’s a bit of a mission getting there and back at night with the dismal road conditions. The staff is very attentive, helpful with advice but not generous with bug repellant. We had to purchase a can of off for US$14.00 and an anti itch cream for US$8.00 that anywhere else in the world, they would have at least offered a courtesy application as you leave for an excursion or just lounging by the pool. Other than that, we had a great time hiking and partaking in other sites in the Mountain Pine Region.

Room Tip: A cottage with wood burning fireplace.

As many have shared, the beautiful hikes are the highlight of this location. Butterfly Falls is aptly called the jewel of Hidden Valley. We enjoyed talking with the staff and appreciated the drop-off and pick-up for the property hikes.

As mentioned by others, the food is expensive for what you are served. A coke that costs $ 0.50 US in town costs $ 3.00 at the lodge. Although not gourmet the dinners with 4 courses range from $25 US. All the individual pizzas, salads and burgers cost $19.00 US. It would seem more forthright to charge what they think is right for the room but not to overcharge for the food.

We hope that they will make some decisions to bring their food quality and pricing in line with other resorts in the area that we visited: San Ignacio Resort, Chaa Creek (both camp and the resort rooms) and the resorts in San Pedro: Victoria House. It seems based on other reviews that the recent change in management and maybe the cooks has brought around a change in the menu offerings. I am envious of those that had such wonderful meals. Hidden Valley is a unique setting and deserves to have a better restaurant reputation.

The rooms have large windows with an enjoyable cross breeze. We would suggest that the management consider upgrading the dense pillows with a softer fluffy pillow usually available at a resort. We are glad we went. We would have brought food from town with us if we had known about the limits of their menu.

Management acknowledges your review and note thus:

Your comment on the cost of the food has been noted.

However, we would like to comment that neither the "change in management and maybe the cooks has brought around a change in menu offerings" The menu offerings and the quality have not been changed in quite sometime now. The variety of these menus are however changed daily to please the various palates of our guests.. You can be assured that you enjoyed what our past guests have been offered.

We thank you for staying at Hidden Valley Inn and your feedback will help us to enhance the quality of our service.

The staff were obliging and eager to please. The great highlight of this remote location are the beautiful trails. One is given a radio for safety and free pick up anywhere on the 7200 acre property. Our favourite trail was Butterfly Falls. Very wet at this time of year and proper footwear and clothing is required. Unfortunately, our pre-arranged tours of ATM cave and river kayaking were cancelled due to high water levels.
We flew into Hidden Valley which was a great way to arrive from Ambergris Caye - we recommend Javier's Flying Service. We spent 5 nights here and took all our meals which were satisfactory. More effort could be made with the continental breakfast.
I understand that the management team is under transition and we did not encounter any manager while there which seemed an omission.
Praise to the housekeeping staff for an excellent first impression of our suite decorated with flower petals and nightly turn down service. The bath tub and outside waterfall shower were very much appreciated. Regrettably, the hammoch room/den is shared with the unit next door and can be rather noisy is used by the guests at the same time.

Thank you for your review as a result of your recent visit to Hidden Valley Inn. We assure you that comments such as these assist us greatly to enhance our services to the guests who spend time with us.

We would like to comment though that, while there is presently a transition period in the change of management, there has always been a Manager in the property. Perhaps the Manager may have been on his weekend off but we have competent Managers on Duty who are capable of overseeing the operations in his absence,

We spent 2 nights at Hidden Valley while traveling through Belize. It was definitely a highlight during our two week trip. There are plenty of fantastic hiking and biking trails to explore. The natural pools and waterfalls were beautiful and refreshing during our hikes. There were many views during our explorations that looked exactly like something you would see on a postcard or in a movie. The cabanas were very clean and comfortable. The food was delicious. However, the resort is remote and the pricing seems to reflect the fact that Hidden Valley is the only source of food for miles. The staff was always extremely kind and accommodating. I wouldn't recommend getting any laundry done at this place. They probably bought a new washing machine with what we paid them to do one load of laundry. Overall, our stay was a memorable experience and we would recommend Hidden Valley for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers who also like to stay in comfortable accommodations.
