“A quiet get-a way in the country... not for the fainted hearted”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2009

PROS: The location was as described on the web-site. It was comfortable and very quiet. The Longhorns provided a rustic touch. Giving the cattle "Cow-Cookies" was a nice daily diversion. The pool, sauna, and hot tub were very nice even though the pool pump had just broken the day we arrived. A well appointed selection of books were available to read. The TV had a DVD/ VHS tape player attached. Sat. TV was available too. The kitchen was equipped with microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster
CONS: Because the ranch is "in the country" the ground / well water has a sulfur smell which makes showers and daily clean-up an aromatic adventure. There was a faucet (carbon) filter in the kitchen that stopped working on the 2nd day of the visit. Because the house was on a septic system, the owners posted signs in the bathroom NOT to flush toilet paper but instead to place in a zip lock bag! The patio door does NOT lock. The internet connection was not activated. The kitchen is best described as "Art Deco" if was functional but did not have an oven or dishwasher.

Overall the Starlight Lake House was a lot of fun and a relaxing vacation spot. Located on a ranch, it's got rustic appeal including longhorn cattle to feed. The pool / hot tub were nice and the surrounding garden was lovely. However, there were three draw backs: 1) the lake house is literally in the owner's back yard as it is a converted cabana, 2) the door didn't lock and the window treatments did not close completely for privacy, and 3) the water - smell and taste were horrendous.

Our trip was planned as a group vacation with several other couples to float down the Guadalupe River but our plans fell apart just days before we were due to leave. So my boyfriend and I went by ourselves and had an amazing time!!!! The cabin was awesome! The "In Keepers" are very nice and down to earth people! We took advantage of every amenity the cabin had to offer, from the pool, hot tub and dry sauna in the master bath. The back roads are perfect for motorcycle rides too! We have already started looking at our calendar to book another trip back to the same cabin! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!
We loved this place!

My husband and I arrived at the Stargate Lodge on Friday afternoon. The door was open and we were greeted by a big bowl of fresh fruit and a bottle of wine with two glasses. We didn't see our hosts, although their home is just above our "cabin." The lodge is the size of a small house, with a huge great room with fireplace and tons of comfy seating. The kitchen counter is an old bank tellers counter - neat. The two bedrooms are large and very nicely decorated. 1 1/2 baths for two people were more than adequate. There's even a sauna/steam bath!
The lodge faces a large swimming pool around which there's a big patio with chairs and tables. Unfortunately, the weather had been cool and the pool wasn't quite warm enough to enjoy. However, the hot tub above the pool was warm and a real pleasure. There were pots of flowers everywhere.
We had a very relaxing week-end exploring the area, enjoying the wineries and local attractions. The owners didn't stop by until Sunday night and were so friendly and personable.
Anyone looking for a private getaway with a private pool and hot tub at a hotel price, should consider Stargate Lodge. It is aptly named when you sit next to the pool in the evening and look up at the sky!

I (with a small group of friends) checked into the Canyon Lake Ranch (owned by Alamo Street Victorian Inn) on Friday, September 21, 2007. Upon check-in, we quickly changed clothes and left for our evening plans. Because the facility is owned by a family, we were instructed that the cabin would be unlocked and keys on the dining table.

Later that evening, we returned to the cabin. Our plan was to use the pool and hot tub. We then noticed that there were several outdoor lights that did not work, the lawn had not been mowed (leaving grass and weeds at least 6” high), and the pool was very dirty. We decided to forego the pool and try out the hot tub, however the hot tub would not work – the temperature control would not heat the water. I specifically booked this cabin because of the pool and hot tub, thinking it would be a relaxing way to spend a weekend.

The following morning, we found that the toilet in the half-bath was not working either. We discovered this after using the toilet, going back to sleep and then waking to a floor covered in water. After turning off the water, I called the owners (Dan & Robbie) of the cabin. The owners proceeded to inspect the toilet and started to remove rugs and furniture, while Robbie, the wife, immediately accused our entire party of stuffing the toilet and causing it to overflow on purpose. My group had planned to sleep in and have a nice quiet morning. Waking up to a floor covered in toilet water very early in the morning was not our plan, and frankly not what we paid for either. Robbie also proceeded to tell us that she “just hoped they did not have to charge us damages.” Upon that statement, I immediately called my credit card company to flag any extra charges from the owners and to dispute my current charges. We decided to stay the second night because we had been precharged and were informed that it would not matter in the credit dispute. Had I been informed that if we continued to stay for the second night we would not be able to dispute the charges, we would have packing our bags and left!

While I spent time on the phone, two other members of our party tried to speak with Robbie. She then told them as well that we needed to watch for damage charges because we had done this on purpose. At that point, the others in my group brought up our additional issues: the dirty pool (we were told that we just belonged in the city), the pool light that was actually detached and sitting on the side of the pool (she remarked that she knew this was broken and that the pool company had not been by), the hot tub that did not work (she actually fixed this) and the dirty floor (dead bugs, rodent feces). Robbie did attempt to clean the pool and turn on the vacuum.

After Dan, the husband, finished vacuuming the floor, the couple left for the day – without cleaning the floor. We spent the rest of the weekend wearing shoes to avoid walking around in what was clearly a dirty floor to begin with, and became even dirtier after being flooded in toilet water, which imposed a health hazard to us during the remainder of our stay.

After returning for the second evening, we decided to cook dinner and try swimming in the pool. Because it was getting darker outside, we also turned on the outdoor lights (half of which were not working), including the pool light. The pool vacuum was still on and caught the cord to the pool light, pulling it into the pool and causing the light to shatter. We could still not use the pool because of an exposed wire hazard and shattered glass covering the pool floor. At this point, because we were threatened with damage charges that morning, I called the phone number listed for Jackie (the ranch manager) to inform her of what happened. She was unaware of the issues we had that morning and informed me that as the manager she was also unaware that we were even checking in that weekend. I made the reservations more than a month in advance. While on the phone with her, I informed her of the additional issues (dirty pool, hot tub that did not work and dirty floors). Jackie then noted that the cabin had probably not been cleaned (she schedules the cleanings and was not informed of our stay) and the pool probably had not been cleaned either, as that is part of her duties. She also asked if the lawn had been mowed, which as I stated above, it had not.

Overall, I feel we did not get the services we paid for. We reserved and paid for a clean, quiet place to stay and a nice pool and hot tub to relax in. The trip was a constant struggle – not only with the owners, who were accusatory and unapologetic with our concerns regarding the issues occurring while staying in their facility, but also with the facility itself. I certainly don’t feel that the value of our stay was worth $465.50 per night.

I just returned from my annual Girls' Getaway. This year, we chose to keep it simple and stayed at the Starview Lodge at Canyon Lake Ranch. We could not have picked better! The lodge and the property were beautiful! Our goal for the weekend was to relax, catch up, and just have a good time. We took advantage of the hot tub, the pool, grilled outside on the BBQ and fed the longhorns. Robbie and Dan were wonderful... they were there when we needed them and not when we did not.

One thing that we appreciated was the vacinity... we were close to restaurants, tourist attractions, the river (though it was closed due to too much rain), but far away enough we could hear the crickets each night.

We wanted a weekend that was easy on the wallet and full of the fun... and that's just what we got. So much, in fact, that we plan on returning next year!

It was my boyfriend's Birthday and I suprised him with a long weekend at Canyon Lake Ranch. We stayed Easter weekend 2006. We drove from Houston and arrived at the ranch @ ll:30pm. As soon as we put all of our belongings up, we headed straight to the hot tub. What a TREAT after a 3 1/2 hour drive. It was quiet, relaxing, very comfortable and was exactly what we needed. The ranch was beautiful and Dan and Robbie were very friendly, yet kept to themselves which gave us plenty of privacy. We swam in the pool, rode our dirt bike/four wheeler on the property, and fed the Longhorns. We took a trip down to the river and went toobing. Every night, we relaxed by the pool and grilled outside. We loved it. If you want to get away, go to the Ranch and expect the best!
We will for sure go again.
Have fun!
