“Nice park off the beaten path”

Lake Colorado City State Park
Reviewed 2 December 2016

We stopped at this park as we camped across Texas. Really enjoyed the fact that it was out of the way and secluded. We stayed at an electric site at the back end of the park and had the place to ourselves. Very quiet and enjoyable. The town of Colorado City is small with a lot of charm - there are a number of downtown shops and we happened to catch a flea market where we bought some fresh produce. One note about the park - all of the grass areas have stickers( called Goatheads) and they will get everywhere and our dogs got to where they would not even venture into the grass due to the stickers.

We needed a place to stay along I-20 from North Texas to New Mexico and this was a very nice place to stay. October is the off season and the park was very quiet, we got a spot right on the lake. There is considerable cactus and brush along the edge, so you don't wander down to the lake but we saw a lot of birds and they were all singing at sunrise. The park staff was very nice, I would stay here again.

We took our toddlers here twice. I would not pay for a day pass. It is really only worth it if you want to camp as there wasn't that much to too or see. There was a burn ban, but most people were hacking off pieces of trees and burning anyways, which I found disappointing. But there was a lot of space for our kids to run. We can back for Easter camping and had an egg hunt, that was fun. The campsites were very clean and most of the property is mowed. Its isn't very dark there, as there is some plant or facility on the other side of the lake. The bathrooms were dirty and needed serious scrubbing, but the water was hot and the toilets flushed, so it was fine with some shower shoes. It is on our way home to OKC from West Texas, so we will definitely stay again, but probably not for more than one night.

We spent one night here on our way out of Texas. On a Tuesday, we had the whole park to ourselves. There are no trees for shade but the picnic tables are covered. The sites are level and you have an open sky for satellite. The fun thing about this park is the amount of wildlife. We had quail and roadrunners in and out of our site many times and very much enjoyed watching them dart about. The camping area sits next to the lake but there is brush that pretty much obstructs the view. There were a lot of stickers in our campsite so anyone with a dog would have had some trouble with that.

Just as most Texas state parks, it is well maintained. The campsites were nice and large. It is in near west Texas, so tress and shade is a little sparse. Campsites are not near the lake, but some have a "view". I dinged one star due to location - in the middle of nowhere. We were just passing thru on our way home, so it was good for an overnight.
