We are long-time residents of April Sound and we love this neighborhood more than any other place we've ever lived. However, the restaurant in the country club is consistently bad.
What makes a restaurant? To simplify, it's food, décor (view) and service, which happen to be the three categories that Zagat reviews and rates. The April Sound Country Club's two restaurants both get the same grades - Food: B; Décor: B; Service: F.
We pay $58/month mandatory fees to the club, but the restaurants and the golf course are open to the public. It makes us crazy to pay this bill, because when you go to the club there's a mandatory 18% tip on all food service. Ironically, this is one of the very few restaurants where I would intentionally leave a $0 tip just to express my dissatisfaction, and we're forced to leave 18%. Smart of them, because I think the average tip would be closer to zero.
We have been here for dinner 4-5 times and brunch 8-9 times. To be fair, we stopped coming in 2010 after repeatedly disappointing visits, but then made another run in 2011 and tried, oh god we tried so hard, to accept that our very own club was unacceptable. After five or six more visits we finally threw in the towel and haven't been back in months.
How bad can service be? Examples: we've arrived and stood in the doorway ("Please wait to be seated") and the average wait to be seated is...unknown. We've actually been seated three times, the other 10 or so we finally gave up and just walked in. It would be one thing if they're busy, but they seldom are. The kicker is when at least three of the servers look up, see you, and go back to talking to their friends at a table or walk into the back room. Almost every time.
Then the tables: how basic is it that if a table is empty it needs to be bussed? They rarely bus the tables here within 15 minutes of a group leaving. We've watched the kids - average age 17 except one older guy with frizzy hair that may be the laziest person we've ever met - stand around and chat, watch TV in the bar, leave the room, and walk past tables covered with dirty dishes. Sooner or later someone will pick them up, after they've been disgusting for way too long. More than once we've walked out onto the patio facing the lake (nice view!) and found EVERY SINGLE TABLE covered with leftover food and dishes. We're used to just moving the old dishes from one table to another and sitting down among the crumbs and spills. Yechh!
There's more, but you get it. Things like the servers never knowing what time brunch starts or ends, what food can or can't be served at what times. It's easy to figure it out though - if you want it then it's too late or too early to order it. I swear it's a game they play, but man does it piss you off.
If I didn't live here I would've left after the first or second visit and never come back. Instead, I continue to write reviews, letters to the managers, talk to other residences, etc. - after 12 years here, I think it's safe to say it's never going to change, and we'll continue to dine elsewhere.
Shame on every manager of these restaurants. We residents deserve better.
