“Retro Hip in Oak Cliff”
Reviewed 11 April 2014

I stayed here while attending a conference in Mesquite with the hope that I could actually enjoy a more unique hotel and neighborhood. The choice paid off!

This is a uniqe setting with a cool retro vibe in a restored motor lodge outside Dallas. The view (though somewhat obstructed now from the bar and patio due to a heinous construction project) is amazing. The bar is great. The staff are beyond friendly and helpful. They really made us feel at home. I love that the grounds were so well kept and suited walking around with a drink or making a call. It was just lovely.

As many reviewers have noted the interior is somewhat lacking. It is a little simple, the bathrooms in the normal rooms are small but we didn't mind. It worked for us and was big enough for two people in two beds. Maybe some more décor would help.

I really loved our stay here and will come back if ever in Dallas.

Room Tip: Standard/cheaper rooms are in the main hotel building and have small bathrooms and no terrace. The...

Hello Retro Hip in Oak Cliff,

Thanks for your note. We like walking the property too and the landscape crew & staff will appreciate your comments on their work! We are spiffing up our rooms a few at a time with new paint, carpet, bathrooms & additional furnishings - hopefully you'll notice when you come back to Dallas.

The Belmont Hotel can just about make this Houstonian okay with Dallas. Situated on the crest of a hill, the Belmont is an old motor court type hotel that has turned into a cool design destination. The landscaping is composed of native plants and somehow fits the scheme of things. The rooms are well-designed and comfortable with minimal clutter and a hip sensibility. The Belmont feels a little bit like the Ace Hotel model and seems to be geared towards younger, hip travelers. I don't consider myself young, but I still appreciate the creature comforts of a first class restaurant, Smoke, next door, and the super-cool bar patio that overlooks the Dallas skyline. Unfortunately for the Belmont, a condozilla has arisen across the road and has partially obscured a once stunning view. The Belmont is also close to the Bishop Arts District and the Design Center, with all the great dining that those two areas offer. Trinity Groves is also very close and offers even more fine dining. The staff are courteous and helpful with suggestions, although one should beware the late evening hours if you need to park. The aforementioned bar tends to monopolize the parking as the crowds come out to listen to live music and watch the skyline. I had a little bit of a problem with noise as my drunk neighbors came home at 2AM, but I blame them and not the Belmont.

Room Tip: Rooms further up the hill tend to be quieter. The closer to the bar you get, the more noise spillove...

A little out from the Dallas CBD but they have a great free shuttle service to take you into the city and pick you up when ready to come back. The rooms are great and most have a view of the city. They are very clean and comfortable. There is a great Bar at the hotel and you can have a drink while looking at the night view of the city. There is a Restaurant next door where you can get a good breakfast or dinner.

We stayed here one night. We were in town staying with family for a week+ but wanted to do something different and special for Valentines Day, so chose the Belmont. I was thankful to get a room! It had been sold out, but I called a day ahead of time to check for any cancellations, and we got into a jr suite.

The suite was 2 levels -- living room, wetbar & bathroom downstairs, and bedroom/bathroom upstairs. Not huge, but more than enough space for a couple. It's obvious that the Belmont is an old motel, but it has been kept up well, while still holding onto the old charm. It didn't feel run-down.

It was too cold to swim in the pool, but we spent time relaxing poolside. It's a quaint and clean pool area with tables/chairs on an upper level, then the pool below and a grassy lawn area with lounge chairs as well. The view of the Dallas skyline from here is amazing.

We had another great view from the bedroom of our suite. We slept with the curtains open, and I didn't even have to lift my head off the pillow to enjoy the after-dark panorama of outlined skyscrapers and the lights action of Reunion Tower... all hearts and arrows on this night.

We didn't eat at the restaurant, but we did enjoy a nightcap from the bar, and sat on the bar's patio under heaters that took the chill off. The DJ was a nice touch, too.

Complimentary parking next door at the restaurant was just a short walk... and we finally figured out the cut-through walkway at the top of the hotel, rather than walking around by the street.

The surrounding area is a little rough around the edges, but there's lots of new construction happening, so it's obvious that this part of Dallas is still undergoing transformation. I hope the Belmont is able to hold onto its good rates as the area continues to develop.

Staff was friendly and eager to offer help with luggage or directions or whatever. We look forward to returning!

The hotel has a bit of charm. The decor is retro with elements of Texas flavor. I stayed in one of the junior suites. It was great. However, being a solo person in the room, it just seemed a bit too much. It was like staying in a condo. 2 complete bathrooms, wet bar, fridge, living area space, and upstair bedroom with balcony. One of the things I appreciated most was the view of the Dallas skyline. It was quite a view.

My co-worker and I were there for business, so we asked for shuttle service to/from WTC. The first day we were unable to get a seat at the time we wanted as all seats had been taken. The shuttle service was really just a suburban. Our driver later revealed to us that he had been lobbying for a bigger car.

We did have dinner at the restaurant SMOKE which was delicious. Our driver recommended a take-out place the next night where he was able to call it in for us and pick it up.

I didn't care for the bed in my room. It was somewhat uncomfortable.

Overall, my stay there was good.

Lovely little hotel, loved that it wasn't in DT Dallas but close enough to everything and great view. Lobby is minuscule so disappointed it was too crowded to drink before our evening event-they had booked events on patio. Other than that really nice.

This was a great surprise , very cool, retro-chic boutique in the Chateau Marmont direction. A renovated 1940's hotel. Very comfortable, super friendly staff once you get talking to them. The view from the pool of downtown is great! With the FANTASTIC Smoke restaurant next door, so good we ate there twice in one day! We did not want to leave... But Dallas has to be one of the most boring cities we have ever visited with exceptions being Wild Bills (cowboy hats and boots) and the Nasher gallery with its beautiful garden!

Room Tip: We wanted a room with a bath... they looked great!
