“Sweet Basil’s Not Such Sweet Slide into Mediocrity”
Reviewed 16 February 2014

I rarely review the decline and fall of restaurants, but my previous review of Sweet Basil as decidedly hopeful. At the time, it was transitioning to new ownership with a renewed commitment to excellent Thai food in comfortable ambience.

Simply put, Sweet Basil has lost its way. Spring rolls, once a house specialty, now consist almost entirely of rough-chopped iceberg lettuce, accompanied by a tablespoon serving of peanut sauce. Meat portions, previously including a generous servings of chicken, pork, and beef, can now only be characterized as appetizer size, at best.

Although I am not necessarily a fan of candle lights for setting a pleasant or even romantic mood, their ersatz replacements with tiny fake candles sporting a flickering LED lights really epitomizes the final collapse of what was once a very good Thai restaurant.

“Low quality, poor taste, bad finish.”
Reviewed 27 July 2013

My family went to Sweet Basil for the first time Friday July 26, 2013. REALLY wish we had not. My wife and son shared the Seafood Mixed Grill skewers. The scallops were no larger than a peanut, the shrimp were barely large enough to cover the skewer stick and the mussel sent my son to their restroom to "evacuate". Awful! I had the Sweet Basil Ginger w/chicken. Bland was the first word I used. In the end we all spent time in the bathroom at home. TERRIBLE food. Service was timely and friendly.

“My favorite Thai food”

Love their lunch combinations. The soups are always tasty and the dishes can be ordered with just as much "hot" as you want.

“Sweet Basil under new and caring management”
Reviewed 22 March 2013

I think the recent reviews of Sweet Basil tell a troubling story. While the food was often very good, high staff turn-over and a lack of attention to upkeep were making this Thai restaurant a less-appetizing destination.

New management took over about a month ago and cleaned the restaurant from top to bottom, with small but nice touches to the decor. The new owner is often present in the dining room to ensure that customers are well served; she and her daughter are committed to making this a pleasant dining experience. Our two dinners in the last month are highly rated.

For those new to Sweet Basil, they invite diners to bring their own wine and never charge a corkage fee.
