A hidden beauty that not many people know of. Hamilton Pool is about a 30 minute drive from South Austin. It gives you a good view of the Hill Country experience while you drive there. Watch out as they have a limited parking space, its usually about 50 cars and then its one out one in. So plan well in advance and early during the day. Also be aware that they may close when there was a heavy rain the previous night as the trails will get soggy.

Even on normal days the trails are unpaved and not stroller friendly. If you are planning with infants mind the fact that you might have to carry them all through the hike. About 1.5 miles from the parking lot the trail divides. On one trail you can go and meet the river. Fishing is the most common activity there. The other leads you to a waterfall - a unique waterfall wher you can hike behind where it falls. Even a novice photographer can capture the moment. Swimming is a common sport here in this pool.

You do not have any food / drink counter available so pack you picnic table food / beverage.

Great spring fed water - which in August in Texas means cool! 1/4 mile hike sounds short but with the steps and rocks it's not for those under age 3 or unfit. Unless you're real macho ditch the cooler and just bring a towel, noodle and a mug - alcohol not allowed - and yes there are officials watching. It's capacity controlled to 75 cars, which is more than enough, cause it's really not all that big. Only "facilities" are back at the parking lot.

The walk to the pool is about a quarter of a mile through mild but rocky terrain. Wearing flip flops is not recommended. You can bring in a cooler, food, alcohol - as long as it is in a can. The beach is small but there was plenty of room to lay a towel out. The water was relatively clear and great to swim or float in. There are fish in there too so don't be alarmed! There is a walkway around the inside of the cove and stairs that lead down to the waterfall/rock/point of entry on the opposite side of the beach. It was a gorgeous sunny day and we had a great time hanging out for a few hours. The walk to the river is about twice as long, but not recommended. There was no beach, really no place to hang out, and a steep hill to traverse to get in the water. The river was running really slow so it would have been easy to get in and swim or float around. There are a few huge rocks to sit on or hang out on. The river was about chest deep for an adult.

This is such a lovely jewel in the crown, unfortunately the day we went ,swiming was banned as bacteria levels were high. It is such a tranquil place, natures best.

Not the easiest of places to get to if your not fit but worth the effort in the end!

I had a chance to visit Hamilton Pool near Austin (not Kyle) in November. The weather was beautiful. It was a little chilly so the crowds were light. It's a very short drive from the west side of Austin to get to Hamilton Pool. It's a very small park and parking is limited but I had no trouble parking on this day.

The walk down the trail to Hamilton Creek can be rather steep and rough so I would not advise it for small children even though I saw some make it down (and had to be carried back up). It has been a dry year in the hill country so Hamilton Creek had very little water flowing. The first time you see the water of Hamilton Pool glistening in the sunlight is really breathtaking. The cascade was more like a drip due to the dry weather but nonetheless it was still beautiful.

The hike from the pool to the Pedernales River was nice and a bit steep at times but the river itself was disappointing because the water level was so low. I would love to make this hike again when the creek and river have a nice flow.

If you are in Austin and want to see the Hill Country, taking Bee Cave Road to Hamilton Pool Road is recommended. Visit Hamilton Pool for a while and then drive on into the Hill Country for the wide open spaces and beautiful vistas.
