“Never got past the office”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2013

So I go to their website, which is pretty nice. I click on Saturday, book a cabin for Saturday, and get a confirmation for Saturday.

We arrive on Saturday to discover that our reservation is now for Sunday. The lady at the front desk apologizes for the error, but the hotel is booked up. She is going to call the manager to see if there's anything they can do for us. In the meantime, we're going to scour Fredericksburg for another hotel, just in case.

I specifically mentioned: "Oh well, if nothing else we can get our deposit back."

The young lady agreed and started dialing the phone. About 10 minutes later, we get a call saying that there is nothing they can do for us, but hey, good news!

They're waiving the cancellation fee. Gee, thanks I guess. But what about the deposit?

They're keeping that. Despite the office worker telling me otherwise because I didn't cancel the reservation they messed up within 10 days.

I don't think "facepalm" says enough. I'm going back to Inn on Baron's Creek.

Thank you David for your review.

Yes, it is true that you booked a reservation online although you did not make your reservation for Saturday, September 21, 2013 as you have stated.

You made your reservation online for Sunday, September 22, 2013 and your confirmation reflects the same information.

At no time did anyone here at the property change your date of arrival. You have made an error and I am truly sorry you feel you have been treated unfairly.

A friend recommended this little gem or we well may never have found it. Small ( they may have 15 rooms) and intimate with a beautiful outdoor fireplace/patio and pool. The rooms are beautifully appointed with furnishings one sees in the upscale stores in this part of the world. The staff is terrific, and you are within a block of downtown.

The lodge is beautifully decorated, I assume that each room is different. There is a rustic/antiques sort of decor which is lovely but looks aren't everything.

We were in room 11 which was spacious but there was no place to set things. There was a small round table and two tiny chairs which became the parking spot for my purse, our pocket contents, etc. There was one comfy chair (not two). Our luggage had to stay on the floor. There was not enough counter space in the bathroom. No place except the floor of the shower to set shampoo etc. The bed was too high even with the stool, and not comfortable at all. There were tons of pillows on the bed and no place to put them at night except on the floor.

The pool area is great for socializing but we couldn't find a trash can for the inevitable trash coming from the snacks and stuff that people brought. Not enough seating around the pool for those not going in the water. It is nice that they provide poolside towels, but don't count on one being available when you need one.

Breakfast was delicious; there were scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon one day and sausage the next, fresh fruit, yogurt, sweet rolls, cereals.

I didn't notice until I read other reviews that there were no hangers in the wardrobe; it had a musty smell anyway being an antique and I would not have put my clothes in there. Bring your hair dryer; hotels have them but this lodge does not.

We had a nice porch with two rocking chairs, but at night we could not see the lock to put our key in. There needs to be a porch light. Luckily I brought a small flashlight.

One morning there was a fire in the fireplace which could have been nice but the effect was to fill the area with smoke. It was bothering my eyes.

Odd that the office was unmanned at checkout time.

Room Tip: If you get a poolside room, you may have people walking outside inches from your bed. We were glad...

Thank you for your response. I appreciate all guest feedback.

While it will take a little time for the owners to repair and replace what has gone missing or broken during their two year absence, we taking on new projects each week. Pool furniture is on that list.

I am perplexed about some of the comments you have posted:
- There are two trash cans on the patio area and on weekends we place a third receptacle out there to help with the high traffic in that area.
- Every suite has 6 wooden hotel hangers in the closet or armoire. I purchased them on May 6, personally placed them in the rooms and check the closets during my daily room inspections.
- Yes we do have hairdryers and you will find them located underneath the bathroom sink inside the vanity.

It is true that I do have to step away from my office quite often and it bothers me a great deal. As the General Manager, I am called upon to oversee every aspect of the property from walking the property each morning, picking up trash, maintaining the pool area and towels, taking reservations, checking in and out the guests, inspecting every guest room after housekeeping has cleaned it, going to the store for housekeeping and breakfast supplies, etc.... It is a lot of work and I do my very best to ensure our guests have a clean and pleasant stay with us. I apologize that I have disappointed you.

We hope that you give us another try and if you ever have any concerns or questions please do not hesitate to bring them to our attention.

Thank you again and I am truly sorry I was not in the office when you checked out.

Sincerely,
Jutea Ballard

This was our 4th visit here and has become our go to place when we visit Fredericksburg. The location is great-within walking distance to everything on Main St but still seems very secluded. We just love the patio areas with the pool and fireplace. While we will book again the next time we come, they probably should look into doing some renovations, particularly to the bathrooms. Many of the fixtures are broken or loose. Just seems they are letting some things go. Would be a shame to let things deteriorate as it’s such a great property.

Room Tip: We like the creek/pool side rooms. "Courtyard" is the parking lot.

Reading others' reviews made me realize that one's experience is relative to the room you choose when staying here. We stay at this property 3 - 4 weekends each year for things like Oktoberfest, the Nights in Old Fredericksburg, Thanksgiving weekend and usually at least one quick additional summer getaway. BUT, we have always stayed in one of the 2 floor suites just off the pool and fireplace areas. There is a living room down with a bar, but, yes, it doesn't have a sink. Perhaps because we have been staying there for years we have just gotten used to bringing our own plasticware and whatever we might need for food and snacks we take to share. The bath/shower combo is upstairs and, yep! The bath tubs are deep jacuzzi style soaking tubs with an overhead rain shower head, so, if you can't climb steps and have a hard time negotiating high steps, this property would not be a good choice. The king beds are comfie with lovely linens and VERY high as another reviewer noted, and there are step stools just under one side of the bed for help in stepping up. There is a gas log fireplace in the bedroom upstairs which is lovely in the winter.

The best part of this property though is the gatherings that occur in the pool and around the huge limestone fireplace on the patio during the day and evenings respectively. We have made some great friends there and have gone back to meet up with them there again for different festivals. People come to the patio at night to share a bottle of wine and everyone usually ends up sharing with one another and it ends up being an impromptu nightcap chat session.

So, if you can't navigate steps and can't walk up and down hills to leave the property and walk the block or so to mainstreet for the shopping, this really isn't the place for you. If you enjoy meeting new people in a place that has a b&b vibe but set up more like a wee hotel and don't mind steps or walking, like having a salt water pool for those hot summer days, then this is a lovely place to roost. Just remember, the set-up is really to set the stage for people hanging out on the large patios and pool area and not so much sitting around the single rooms. I hope this helps.

Room Tip: I would opt for the rooms that are just off the pool - rooms 1 through 7. All the other rooms open...

Be careful when booking here. The room was way too small....no place to sit but 2 antique chairs, no place to hang things, no place to put a suitcase, etc. The bathtub was so high that I was scared of falling everytime I got in. The advertised creek and pool views were deceptive as the railing was so high that you had to stand to see either and there were no chairs to sit in. Also,in the 2 story rooms, the bed is upstairs and bathroom down.....not a good set up. The shower itself was nice and the breakfast good. We will not be going back.

Room Tip: Go see the room in person first.

We are sorry she did not enjoy her stay, we were able to accommodate her in a larger unit for two nights but had to move her back for the third due to availability. The room she had chosen was one of our smaller rooms which only has the bed and dining table and chairs however it does have an armoire to hang clothes in(not a traditional closet). We do have two story suites that have the living room downstairs and bed and bath upstairs on the same level. Our tubs are deep so if mobility is an issue you may want to choose a suite with a walk-in shower. Unfortunately due to occupancy we were unable to offer her a suitable suite to fit her as all of our 16 units are unique in decor and layout

We have stayed in at least 75 B&B's and this was the worst experience of all. First off - I agree with the other reviewer they know nothing about how to treat guests. We had booked 6 rooms, we had 6 couples going and they never returned any phone calls or emails prior to our arrival - I just gave up trying to get ahold of them. We checked into the place and went to our rooms and no one had any hangers. Get this. No hangers. They said people take them so they don't have them. Then the bathroom had strictly shampoo, conditioner and soap, no body gel, etc. that you get at other B&B's. Washclothes had stains on them, glasses seemed dirty and the wet bar is really a dry bar - no sink - if we were to use the microwave there was not one spoon or fork or dish to use. Don't waste your money on this place. Too many other nice places to stay besides this one. And it is a difficult hike to Main Street.
